Most shed break-ins are opportunistic: a door lifted off soft hinges, a hasp screwed out of thin timber, a window panel popped out, or a padlock attacked at its weakest point. The sobering truth is that many sheds are secured better in the catalogue photo than in real life, and the fix is rarely just a better padlock — it's understanding where the structure itself is the weak link.

Common weak points in garden sheds

Doors and their hinges come first: short screws into softwood, hinges exposed on the outside, and hasps fixed with tiny staples that tear out under leverage. Windows and roof lights are easy entry points, especially acrylic panels held by weak trims. Walls themselves matter — feather-edge and thin ply panels can be levered or cut, and a gap between the wall and the base gives a crowbar somewhere to work. Floors can be lifted from below on some bases, and anything visible through windows advertises what's worth taking. Poor lighting, an overgrown approach and a padlock attacked at the shackle rather than the body all make an opportunistic visit more tempting.

What we assess

We walk around the shed with a thief's eye: testing the door, its hinges and fixings, the hasp and staple and the timber behind them, the windows and their fixings, the wall panels, the roof and the base perimeter. We look at how visible the shed is, whether anything valuable can be seen through glazing, and how the existing locks are fitted. Then we explain, in plain terms, which weaknesses matter most and what the realistic options are — because the honest answer sometimes includes rearranging storage or adding screening rather than buying more hardware.

Strengthening options

Practical upgrades include fitting hasps, staples and padlock guards with proper fixings into reinforced or replaced timber; replacing short screws with fixings that bite into sound wood or adding backing plates; protecting or replacing weak window panels; securing hinges so the door can't be lifted off; closing gaps at the base perimeter; and fitting better-rated locking hardware matched to the door and frame. After a break-in we can also repair the damage — door, frame, panels and closing hardware — so the shed is both whole and secure again. Any parts are quoted separately, and the full cost is approved before work starts.

What we can't promise

No shed can be made burglar-proof, and we don't claim that any work prevents theft — good security deters and delays, which is usually enough to move an opportunist on. We fit and repair hardware and structure; we don't provide certified security advice, insurance compliance statements or alarm and CCTV monitoring, and if those would genuinely help we'll say so plainly. Heavy structural changes or a shed that's fundamentally too weak for its contents may be better answered by replacement, and we'll give you that view honestly at the quote stage.

Timing matters with security work. If a break-in has happened nearby or something has made you uneasy, don't leave a weak shed sitting exposed while you think about it — most opportunist theft is a matter of a door that opens in seconds. We can usually make meaningful improvements in a single visit once the assessment is done, and we'll prioritise the weak points that matter most if you'd rather spread the cost across stages.

Booking your assessment

Call or book through the website and tell us what the shed is made of, roughly how old it is, what you store in it, whether there's power and lighting, and whether anything has happened recently that prompted the concern. You'll pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with any parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Sheds hold the things thieves like most: bikes, power tools, mowers and garden kit, often behind nothing more than a thin door and a cheap hasp. If something about your shed feels vulnerable — after a near-miss, a break-in nearby or just a growing collection of valuables — our visit gives you an honest assessment of its weak points and a quoted plan to fix them.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about shed security issue

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I secure my shed myself?

Replacing a padlock or adding a hasp is reasonable DIY if the timber is sound. The mistake most people make is fixing new hardware into the same weak wood — a hasp screwed into thin cladding tears out under leverage no matter how good the padlock is. If the structure, hinges or fixing base are the weak point, professional assessment saves money in the long run.

What do you look at during a security assessment?

We test the door, hinges, hasp and staple and the timber behind them, check windows and roof lights, examine wall panels, the base perimeter and the roof, and consider visibility and lighting. You get a plain-language list of weak points ranked by what actually matters.

Does a better padlock make my shed secure?

A good padlock helps, but attackers usually go for the hasp, the hinges or the panels rather than the lock itself. We assess the whole closing arrangement — hardware, fixings and the timber they grip — so the strong points actually reinforce each other instead of leaving the weakest link to be found.

Can you repair a shed after a break-in?

Yes — we repair damaged doors, frames, panels and locking hardware as one job, reinforcing the weak point that was exploited so the same method doesn't work twice. Repairs are quoted before work starts, with any replacement parts quoted separately for your approval.

How much does shed security work cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts quoted separately, and we'll talk you through the options before you commit to anything.
