A leaning fence is the fence telling you something has moved below the surface. The lean is the symptom; the cause is usually in the ground, and understanding it is what separates a straightening job that lasts from one you will be repeating in two years.

Why Fences Lean

Posts move in soft or waterlogged ground — the most common cause by a wide margin. Timber posts rot through at ground level, lose their stiffness, and bend rather than stand. Concrete posts can crack or, more often, rock in sockets that were never properly compacted. Wind loading does the rest: a solid fence catches enormous force in a storm, and every gust transfers that load to the posts. Slopes and garden changes matter too — a border that has been raised with new soil or paving buries the post base deeper into wet ground, which is exactly where rot and movement start. And sometimes the lean comes from outside: a vehicle backing into a fence, or a neighbour's tree root pushing the run out of line.

How We Assess the Lean

We check each post along the run at ground level, probing for softness and testing for movement in the ground. We look at drainage around the bases, whether soil or paving has been built up over the years, and whether the panels themselves are sound — because there is no point resetting posts to hold panels that are on their last legs. The distinction between post failure and panel failure matters: posts and panels are separate problems and we assess them separately, so you are only quoted for what has actually failed. Everything is explained in plain terms and the full cost is approved before we start, with parts quoted separately.

Straightening and Re-Setting Options

A post that is sound but loose in its socket can often be re-firmed — packed and re-set with fresh mix, panels temporarily supported while it cures. A post that is soft or cracked at ground level needs replacing, which means digging out the old base and setting a new post. That involves digging near the boundary, and boundary lines often carry buried pipes, cables and drains. We locate carefully and use detectors where appropriate, but no scan guarantees what is below, so we ask that your utilities' plans are available — providing them is part of a safe dig approach and is the customer's responsibility. Where a long run has moved wholesale, the honest answer may be re-aligning several posts as a small project, quoted after the survey.

Weather and Timing

Re-setting posts needs ground that is workable and weather that lets mixes cure; straightening a fence in high wind is not sensible and we will not do it. We schedule for suitable conditions and will say plainly when weather must delay the work. If the lean is worsening quickly, we can often brace the run as an interim so it does not go over before the proper repair.

Aftercare

A straightened fence stays straight longest where water is not sitting at the post bases — keep soil and mulch from banked up against them, and treat timber posts so the ground-level zone stays sound. Check the run after big storms and call early if any post starts moving again.

When to Call Us

Call when the fence is visibly out of plumb, when a post rocks when pushed, or when the lean has worsened after a storm. When booking, tell us roughly how long the run is, whether posts are timber or concrete, and whether the lean came on gradually or followed a specific event. That helps us plan the right visit.

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, and parts are quoted separately from labour.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A fence that has started to lean rarely stops on its own — it gets worse with every wet winter and every storm. Our visit covers assessing the posts and the ground they sit in, explaining what has moved and what the honest options are, and quoting the full cost before any work starts.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about leaning fence

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could I straighten a leaning fence myself?

Re-firming a single loose post is within reach of a confident DIYer with help to hold things plumb while mix cures. It becomes a bigger job when posts have rotted through, when several are moving, or when digging near a boundary where services may be buried. If you cannot tell which posts are sound, an assessment first saves money.

What do you check when a fence is leaning?

Every post at ground level, where movement and rot begin; the ground and drainage around the bases; whether soil or paving has been built up against the fence; and the condition of the panels. We assess posts and panels separately so the quote only covers what has actually failed.

Is a leaning fence dangerous?

It can become so. A fence that is actively leaning is under stress, and in high wind or after a knock a failing section can come down suddenly — onto a path, a car or a person. If the lean is worsening, keep people from lingering alongside it and get it assessed rather than waiting for the next storm to decide.

Will straightening last, or will it lean again?

It lasts when the cause is dealt with. A post re-set in sound, compact ground with the drainage improved will stand for years; a post straightened but left soft at the base will lean again. We will tell you honestly which posts can be saved by resetting and which genuinely need replacing, and why.

How is the work priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, and parts — posts, mixes, spurs — are quoted separately. Longer re-alignment runs are surveyed and quoted as a project first.
