An uneven wall finish is one of those problems that photographs badly and annoys constantly. Ripples and shadow bands appear whenever light rakes across the surface; paint covers the colour but not the shape. Before anything is smoothed, though, the cause matters — unevenness can be cosmetic, or it can be telling you that render has blown, that the wall behind is out of true, or that a repair was done badly. This page explains the causes and how we put them right.

Why wall finishes end up uneven

Application is the commonest cause: render or plaster laid on too thickly in places, over-worked as it sets, or finished at different times by different hands leaves ripples and ridges that show in side light. Water and age do the rest — render that has blown in patches reads as uneven because hollow areas sit proud or sunken; patch repairs from years past often stand slightly proud of the surrounding surface; and walls that have moved slightly over decades finish with waves and undulations that no coating disguises. Sometimes the substrate is the issue: an out-of-plumb or undulating wall can only be brought to a flat finish by building up the render, and there are limits to how much build-up is sensible.

How we diagnose it

We examine the surface in raking light and by feel, and we sound it to find hollow, drummy areas that mean the finish has lost its bond. We measure how far out of true the surface is with a straightedge, which tells us whether the problem is a skim-deep finish issue or a build-up job. We check the wall behind — inside and out — for damp, movement or repairs that explain specific uneven patches. The diagnosis decides the approach, and we will tell you plainly which of the three situations you are in.

The options, honestly laid out

For shallow unevenness in a sound finish, the answer is often levelling: high spots skimmed down, low spots filled with fine finishing material, and the whole area refinished so it reads as one surface. For unevenness caused by blown or failed render, the failed areas come off and are reinstated properly — a finish coat over patchwork rarely hides the underlying shape. Where the undulation is deeper or spread widely, a full re-render or over-skim of the elevation gives a genuinely flat result and a uniform appearance; that is a quoted project after survey, staged over several working days in suitable weather.

There are honest limits. A wall that is structurally out of true can be improved but not always made perfectly flat without excessive build-up, and we will tell you what is realistic before starting rather than promising mirror-flat results. And where the unevenness traces to movement or damp, those causes are addressed first — refinishing a moving or wet wall is money spent twice.

Weather, timing and expectations

Refinishing work needs suitable conditions: dry walls and frost-free curing for external render, so scheduling follows the forecast and dates may move with the weather. New finish beside old can read slightly differently even when well matched — that is why refinishing whole areas or elevations usually looks better than patching, and we will show you the trade-off in cost and appearance before you decide. We cannot guarantee a finish will never crack again, especially on walls that move seasonally, and we will say what to watch for afterwards.

Aftercare

Keep gutters and downpipes in good order so water never runs down the finished surface. Inspect the finish each spring for early cracks and have them sealed before frost. Avoid pressure washing.

Booking your visit

Book through maintenance-men.com or by phone. You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the agreed work is quoted and approved before we start, with parts and materials quoted separately. A photograph of the wall in daylight, plus one in raking light if you can, helps us plan the assessment.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about uneven wall finish

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fix an uneven wall finish myself with filler and paint?

Shallow ripples on a sound surface can be improved with fine filler and careful sanding, and that's reasonable DIY for a small area. What filler can't do is fix hollow render, deep undulation or a wall that's out of true — and paint over an uneven surface usually makes the ripples more obvious in raking light. If the unevenness is widespread or sounds hollow, get it assessed first.

What do you check when a wall finish looks uneven?

We examine the surface in raking light and with a straightedge to measure how far out of true it is, sound it for hollow areas that mean the render has blown, and look for damp or movement behind specific uneven patches. That tells us whether you need levelling, reinstatement of failed areas, or a full refinish — and we explain which before quoting.

Could uneven walls mean something is wrong with the building?

Usually not — most unevenness is application history and weathering. But waves and bulges in a wall can be the visible sign of movement, and hollow render over a damp wall signals a water problem. We check for those signs during the assessment and, if anything suggests structural movement, we recommend an engineer's opinion rather than a cosmetic refinish.

Will refinishing make the wall perfectly flat and uniform?

It makes a dramatic improvement, and full re-finishing of an area or elevation gives the most uniform result. But a wall that is structurally out of true can only be brought to flat with excessive build-up, which has limits, and we will tell you honestly what is achievable before starting. Perfection is the enemy of a sensible quote — we'd rather set the right expectation.

How much does fixing an uneven wall finish cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the agreed work is quoted and approved before we start, with parts and materials quoted separately. Local levelling is usually a single visit; full re-rendering or re-skimming is surveyed and quoted as a project over several days.
