When part of a driveway collapses — a bay of concrete has broken and dropped, a section of tarmac has caved in, or blocks have fallen into a hollow beneath — the surface has stopped being the problem. Something below has failed: a void has opened, the subbase has washed away, or an old pipe or trench has given up. This page explains what a collapse usually means, how we assess it safely, and what an honest rebuild involves, including the checks we make before anyone digs.
What a collapse tells us
A collapse is the most serious of the driveway defects because it means material has physically left the space beneath the surface. Common causes: water washing fines out of the subbase through cracked or open edges until a cavity forms under traffic; a leaking or failed drain or water pipe softening and hollowing the ground; an old service trench backfilled loosely decades ago finally compacting under load; or simply a very thin, uncompacted base that has finally given up under a heavy vehicle. The cause matters enormously, because rebuilding on top of an undetected leak or a continuing water path simply schedules the next collapse. So our first job is diagnosis, not demolition.
Safety first
Before anything else, keep vehicles and people off the collapsed area — the edges of a collapse are almost always undercut and weaker than they look, and a second collapse is possible while the first is standing open. Mark the area, keep children and pets away, and do not attempt to probe it deeply yourself; if there is any possibility of a live pipe or drain beneath, leave the investigation to us. On our visit we assess whether anything is unstable at the edges, make the area safe, and check for signs — persistent damp, a dip that grows after rain, a drain running slowly nearby — that a service underneath is involved.
How we assess the failure
We establish the full extent of the failure, which is usually larger than the visible hole: probing around the edges finds where sound material begins. We look at what remains of the base — its depth, its material, its compaction — and at the drive's drainage and falls to understand how water reached the spot. If a drain or water pipe is suspected, we recommend investigating and repairing that first, because it sits at the front of the queue: the rebuild comes after the cause is dead.
The rebuild
A proper rebuild is excavation down to sound, undisturbed ground; removal and disposal of the failed material; rebuilding the subbase in compacted layers appropriate to vehicle loads; and reinstating the surface to match or blend with the rest of the drive. Where water caused the failure, we correct falls, edges and drainage as part of the work so the new base is not fed by the same path. This is a quoted project, not a visit-rate job: the scope — depth of excavation, volume of material, disposal, reinstatement area — only becomes real after a survey, and multi-day work is staged with clear checkpoints so you always know where you stand.
Underground services — the honest position
Digging near a driveway means digging near water pipes, drains, electricity and communications services, which is exactly why we locate carefully and use detectors where appropriate before any excavation. But we will be straight with you: no scan guarantees what is below. Utilities' plans, their own records and a safe dig approach — hand digging near known services, watching for what emerges — are part of how the work is planned, and we set out clearly with you where your responsibilities lie around plans and permissions before we start.
Costs and booking
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit — the assessment itself runs at that rate. The rebuild is quoted in full after survey and approved by you before we start, with materials and any specialist involvement quoted separately. When you book, tell us the surface type, how long the collapse has been there, whether it grows after rain, and any services you know of beneath the drive. Photos help, but the survey is what sets the price.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A section of driveway that has actually collapsed is not a patching job, and we will not pretend otherwise. Our visit makes the area safe and assesses how far the failure extends, what is buried beneath, and what a correct rebuild involves — then you get a surveyed quote for work that will hold, not a quick fill that will not.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about collapsed driveway section
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I fill a collapsed driveway section myself?
No — and we say that plainly. A collapse means material beneath the surface has gone, so any fill sits over a void or soft ground and re-collapses under the next vehicle. Worse, filling it can hide an active leak or drain failure that needed attention. The area needs excavation, diagnosis and a proper rebuild; the useful DIY part is keeping people and vehicles away until it is assessed.
What do you check when a driveway has collapsed?
We make the area safe first, then establish the full extent of the failure by probing beyond the visible edges, inspect what remains of the base, check drainage and falls, and look for signs that a pipe or drain beneath is involved. If a service failure is suspected we recommend dealing with that first — rebuilding over an active leak is wasted money.
Is a collapsed driveway dangerous?
Yes, it can be. The edges of a collapse are usually undercut and can give way under foot or wheel, a deep hole is a serious trip and vehicle hazard, and if a void has formed there may be more collapse to come. Keep everyone off it, mark it clearly, and have it assessed promptly — we will make the area safe as part of our visit.
Do you check for pipes and cables before digging?
We locate services carefully and use detectors where appropriate before any excavation, and we hand dig near anything known or suspected. But no scan can guarantee exactly what lies below, so utilities' plans and a safe dig approach are part of the arrangement, and we explain with you where the customer's responsibilities sit around plans and permissions before work starts.
How much does it cost to rebuild a collapsed driveway section?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit — that covers the assessment. The rebuild itself is a quoted project: after survey we give you a full price, which you approve before we start, with materials and any specialist work quoted separately. There is no honest way to price a collapse over the phone.
