Mechanical Jam? We'll Free the Mechanism Without Forcing It in Edgbaston
We locate what is binding — an obstruction, a bent linkage, a seized pivot or a failed actuator — release it properly and check the mechanism for damage afterwards.
Booking fee plus hourly labour — the price is confirmed before any work starts.

Mechanical jams on adjustable furniture usually have a physical cause you can name: something caught, something bent, something seized or something broken. Occasionally the cause is an actuator that has failed internally and is holding the mechanism in place. All of them need the mechanism to be inspected with the power off, not driven through the resistance.
Where Jams Come From
- Obstructions. Bedding hanging over a frame edge, a dropped cushion, a phone charger, a remote, a hot-water bottle, a child's toy, a pet's ball. Also clothing, and — on recliners — the strap of a bag left on the seat.
- Bent linkage. A linkage that has been forced, or that has taken a knock, will bind against itself for the rest of its life unless straightened or replaced.
- Seized pivots and pins. Lack of use, corrosion or a dry joint will lock a pivot solid.
- Failed actuator. A motor that has seized internally, or a brake that will not release, holds the mechanism rigid no matter what the control box tells it.
- Frame distortion. A base that has been dragged, or dropped during a move, can go out of square so the moving sections bind on the fixed frame.
- Foreign objects inside the mechanism. Small items fall through slats and settle in exactly the wrong place.
Why Forcing It Is a Bad Idea
Forcing a jammed mechanism transfers load into parts that were designed for a smooth, balanced movement. Linkages bend, pins shear, mountings tear out of the frame, and the actuator — which is trying to move something immovable — overheats and can fail. A jam caused by a trapped cushion is a five-minute fix; the same jam forced by hand can cost a linkage and a motor.
Holding a button down while the mechanism strains has the same effect, only slower. If the furniture stops and the motor keeps humming, release the button.
How We Free It
We isolate the power first, then look into the mechanism with a torch — never with hands, and never under a raised section that could drop. We identify what is binding and remove the obstruction, or release the linkage at the point of least load.
If a pivot has seized, it is freed, cleaned and lubricated with the correct product, or the pin is replaced if it is worn. If a linkage is bent, it is straightened on the bench where the material allows, or replaced — a straightened linkage that has been work-hardened is not always sound, and we will say which it is.
If the actuator has seized or its brake has failed, the unit is replaced. We do not dismantle a sealed actuator to free it.
Afterwards, the Important Part
Freeing the jam is half the job. The other half is checking what the stall did: pins that have started to shear, holes that have elongated, brackets that have bent, mountings that have loosened, and whether the two sides of the furniture now track evenly. A mechanism that is freed but left out of alignment will jam again, and the second time it will be worse.
We run the furniture through its full travel unloaded, then loaded where it is safe, and confirm it moves smoothly without labouring. If the frame has distorted, we will tell you that the honest fix is a new base or a replacement component rather than a straightening that will not hold.
Safety Around the Mechanism
Never put hands, fingers or tools into a moving mechanism, even briefly, and never reach under a raised bed section. Isolate at the wall before inspecting anything. Keep children and pets clear when the furniture is moving.
If someone is trapped or the furniture is holding them awkwardly, help them out safely rather than trying to move the mechanism with them on it. If they are in pain or distressed, call 999.
Preventing the Next Jam
Keep the floor beneath and around the furniture clear, and check before operating that nothing has fallen into the mechanism. Do not store items under an adjustable bed where the sections descend. On recliners, check the seat and the gap behind the footrest before closing. Operate the furniture through its full range regularly rather than leaving it in one position for months, and stop pressing the button the moment it sounds like it is working hard.
Booking the Visit
Tell us what happened just before it jammed, whether anything is visibly caught, and whether the motor is still trying to run. If the furniture is stuck with someone on it, say so when you book. The booking fee is paid when you book, labour runs hourly at a rate depending on notice, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work begins.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A jam is the mechanism refusing to move, and the temptation is always to make it move anyway. That is the one thing that reliably makes things worse. Our approach is to find what is binding, release it without loading the frame, and then check the parts that took the strain — because a jam leaves damage behind even after the obstruction is gone.
What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service
4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews
Proper job, no upselling
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes
Fine in the end
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.
Job: Stair Lift Service
Would use again
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Control Panel Fault

Questions people ask about mechanical jam
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I pull the obstruction out myself?
Only with the furniture switched off at the wall and never with your hand inside a raised section that could drop. If the item will not come free easily, or the mechanism has bent around it, stop and let us look — pulling harder is how a trapped cushion becomes a bent linkage.
What do you do on the visit?
We isolate the power, identify what is binding, remove the obstruction or release the linkage at its least loaded point, then check the parts that took the strain — pins, holes, brackets, mountings and alignment. Finally we run it through its full travel to confirm it moves smoothly.
The motor is humming but nothing moves — is that a jam?
It can be. A seized actuator or a brake that will not release holds the mechanism rigid while the motor tries to run. That is a different repair from a trapped object, and it is why we test the actuator as well as looking for obstructions. Release the button rather than letting it strain.
Will the mechanism be as good as before?
That depends on what the stall did. A jam cleared before anything bent leaves no lasting effect; a mechanism that has been forced may need a linkage or pin replaced. We check alignment and wear after freeing it and tell you honestly whether it is sound or whether a component needs replacing.
What does it cost?
A booking fee is payable when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We diagnose the jam, then quote the full cost of the work and you approve it before we start. Any replacement linkage, pin or actuator is quoted separately.
