Why a Boiler Fails to Ignite
Failure to ignite has a long list of possible causes, and some sit firmly on our side of the water-and-electrics boundary while others do not:
- System pressure — a sealed boiler will refuse to attempt ignition when pressure has fallen below its minimum. This is the commonest cause we find, and it is a water-side issue with a leak behind it.
- Controls and demand — a thermostat that is not calling for heat, dead thermostat batteries, a programmer fault or loose control wiring means the boiler never even tries to light.
- Sensors and PCBs — flow sensors, thermistors and the printed circuit board tell the boiler whether it is safe to light. Failed sensors and PCB faults are electrical components we can often replace.
- Condensate blockage — a frozen or blocked condensate pipe stops many modern boilers lighting in cold weather, and clearing it is water-side work.
- Air and circulation problems — an airlocked pump or severely restricted flow can trigger lockouts before ignition.
- Gas-side causes — a failed ignition electrode, gas valve, burner or flue problem, or an interruption in the gas supply itself, will also prevent ignition. These we diagnose only within safe limits and never repair.
First Checks You Can Do Safely
Check the pressure gauge against the range in the boiler's manual and top up through the filling loop if it is low — with the system cool, and stopping at the specified cold pressure. Confirm the thermostat and programmer are actually calling for heat and the thermostat batteries are fresh. Look at the boiler display and note any error code, because manufacturers publish what each one means. In freezing weather, a frozen condensate pipe is a frequent culprit; thawing it with warm water — never boiling — is safe and often restores ignition. Do not repeatedly press the reset button, do not open the boiler casing and do not attempt anything on the gas side, including checking the gas meter valve beyond confirming it is fully open.
How We Diagnose Within Our Limits
We verify the boiler has pressure, power and a genuine call for heat, then test the sensors, controls and wiring that feed the ignition decision. We check the condensate path and the pump's circulation, because a boiler that cannot move water will often refuse to light as a protection. If all of that is sound and the boiler still will not ignite, the fault lies with ignition electrodes, the gas valve, the burner or the flue — we stop there, explain exactly what our findings indicate, and do not attempt to open the casing further or adjust anything gas-related.
The Referral You Will Get
Where ignition failure points to the gas side, we recommend one of the trusted Gas Safe registered engineers we work closely with. You will receive a clear summary: what we checked, what we found, what we repaired, and what the remaining evidence points towards. That saves the Gas Safe engineer diagnostic time and saves you paying twice for the same tests. If we have already fixed the pressure, condensate or control fault, we will say so plainly — and there is a real chance the boiler ignites before anyone else needs to attend.
Why Pressure and Condensate Faults Are Ours to Fix
Repressurising a system, finding the leak behind a dropping gauge, and clearing or insulating a condensate pipe are water-side tasks fully within our competence, and they are behind a large share of no-ignition callouts every winter. If your boiler locks out repeatedly through the cold months, having the condensate run properly supported and insulated is a small job that prevents a seasonal fault returning.
Booking the Ignition Diagnosis
Tell us your boiler's make and model, the exact error code or behaviour you see, the pressure reading, and whether the fault began in cold weather. Same-day attendance may be available but is never guaranteed. A booking fee is paid when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost of any work is quoted and approved before we start. Parts are quoted separately. We cover the West Midlands.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Booked 14+ days ahead
£25 booking fee
then £85 per hour of labour
Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.
Booked within 48 hours
£100 booking fee
then £65 per hour of labour
For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.
Same-day call-out
£220 booking fee
then £45 per hour of labour
Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A boiler that clicks and tries but never lights, or locks out with an ignition error, is frustrating — especially because the actual lighting of the burner is gas-side work we do not carry out. What we can do is every bit as valuable: rule out or repair the water-side and electrical causes that stop a boiler igniting, diagnose safely within our limits, and hand you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer we work closely with when the evidence points to the gas side.
What our customers say about our heating & radiators service
5 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Fast, tidy and friendly
Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.
Job: No Heating from Boiler
Turned up when they said
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Expansion Vessel Fault
Exactly what was quoted
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Airlock in Hot Water System

Questions people ask about boiler not igniting
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Should I keep resetting a boiler that will not light?
One reset attempt after checking pressure and controls is reasonable. Repeated resetting is not — it can mask a developing fault and, on gas-side ignition problems, it achieves nothing while the underlying cause remains. If the boiler locks out again, leave it and get the fault diagnosed properly.
Can you fix a boiler that will not ignite, or only diagnose it?
We fix every water-side and electrical cause — pressure loss, leaks, condensate blockages, sensors, PCBs, thermostats and pumps are all within our scope. The burner, gas valve, ignition electrodes and flue are gas-side, and there we diagnose within safe limits, explain our findings and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer we work closely with. We are not Gas Safe registered and never carry out gas work.
Why will my boiler not light in freezing weather?
The classic winter cause is a frozen condensate pipe — the plastic waste pipe that runs outside. Thawing it gently with warm water and booking a proper fix with insulation and routing advice usually ends the seasonal lockouts. Low pressure from a contracting system is the other common cold-snap culprit.
Is a boiler that clicks but never lights dangerous?
By itself it is usually just a fault, and modern boilers lock out safely. But if you ever smell gas, do not operate electrical switches or flames, ventilate if it is safe, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside. A no-ignition fault alone does not require that response.
What will the visit cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us. The full cost of the diagnosis and any repair is quoted and approved before work begins, and parts are identified and quoted separately. If a Gas Safe referral is needed, we will tell you before you commit to anything further.
