A tidy home for the box-and-cable clutter under your TV

Once the screen is on the wall, the next problem usually appears straight below it: a soundbar, a console, a set-top box, a router and a tangle of leads with nowhere sensible to go. A media shelf solves that neatly. Fixed directly to the wall beneath the television, it takes the electronics off the floor or the crowded stand, puts them at the right height for the remote sensor, and leaves the cables with a short, controlled run between shelf and screen.

How we assess the wall before anything is drilled

Media shelves look lightweight but rarely are. A soundbar alone can weigh several kilograms, and a shelf carrying a console, amplifier and boxes quickly becomes a substantial load. Before fitting we check three things: what the wall is actually made of (plasterboard over studs, block, or brick), what the shelf and its bracket are rated to carry, and where it is sensible to drill given the likely routes of pipes and cables. We never drill blindly, and if the position you want offers no sound fixing, we will say so and suggest an alternative rather than force it.

The fitting itself

With the height agreed — typically level with the bottom of the screen or a little below, so the soundbar sits in front rather than blocking it — we mark up, drill, and fix the bracket with plugs and screws matched to the wall and the load. The shelf goes on, we check it level both ways, and then we press-test it with the weight you intend to put on it before we pack up.

Cable management is usually part of the same conversation. Short runs can be tidied with clips; a cleaner look can be achieved with surface trunking along the wall. If you want cables fully concealed inside the wall, that needs an agreed plan before we start, and we only carry out non-invasive cable management — we do not do electrical rewiring work. Router placement matters too: moving a router onto a metal-shelved or awkwardly positioned shelf can affect your Wi-Fi, so we will flag it if the spot you have chosen is likely to cause problems.

What to have ready

In most cases you supply the shelf and brackets — floating shelves, glass media shelves and wooden shelves with hidden brackets all behave differently, so it helps us to know which you have bought. If you would like us to source the shelf instead, say so when booking and we will quote the materials separately from the labour. Have a rough idea of everything that will live on the shelf; it changes the fixing choice. And clear the space beneath the TV so we have room to work.

Aftercare

Give the fixings a week to settle into the wall, then check the shelf has not developed any movement, particularly if the wall is plasterboard. Load it with the heaviest item at the point over the bracket, not on a long overhang, and keep ventilation gaps around anything that runs hot, like an amplifier or a console. If you notice sagging or creaking later, take the weight off and give us a call.

Booking your visit

A straightforward media shelf on a sound wall is a short job; something more involved, such as a long shelf with concealed cabling or a difficult wall, takes longer and we will tell you before we start. Same-day slots may be available if you call early. To get a firm price, book a visit: we charge a booking fee when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, and we agree the full cost with you before any work begins.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A wall-mounted TV looks unfinished when the equipment underneath still lives on a wobbly stand or a stack of books. A properly fitted media shelf gives your soundbar, set-top box and console a solid home and clears the floor. We assess the wall, fix the bracket correctly and leave you with a shelf that sits level and carries its load without protest.

Questions people ask about media shelf installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fit a media shelf myself?

You can, if you have a drill, a spirit level and the right fixings for your wall. The usual DIY trouble is treating every wall the same — a floating shelf fixed with light-duty plugs into plasterboard will sag or tear out under real equipment. We bring the correct fixings for the wall we find and the weight you intend to carry.

What do you check before fitting the shelf?

We identify the wall construction, work out a sensible drilling position avoiding likely pipes and cables, and match the fixing to the shelf's weight rating and the equipment going on it. If the wall will not take a safe fixing where you want the shelf, we will explain why and propose another position or approach rather than risk a poor fixing.

Will the shelf hold my soundbar and games console?

That depends on the wall, the bracket and how the shelf is loaded, which is exactly what we assess on site. A solid masonry wall with good fixings will take a lot; a plasterboard wall may need cavity fixings or a bracket positioned on the studs. We test the shelf with the real load before we leave, and we will tell you honestly if the setup is at its limit.

Can you hide the cables as well?

We can usually tidy cables with clips or surface trunking, which keeps everything non-invasive. Concealing cables inside the wall is a bigger job that needs agreeing in advance, and we cannot promise an invisible result without seeing the wall first. We do not carry out electrical rewiring — that is outside our scope.

How is the visit priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how quickly you need the visit — more notice generally means a lower rate. Before we start work we quote the full cost and you approve it. If a shelf or special fixings need to be supplied, those are identified and quoted separately from the labour.
