A street outage is usually an external issue
When several homes lose electricity at roughly the same time, an interruption to the local distribution network is a likely explanation. Causes can include equipment failure, damaged cables, weather or planned work. A single property going dark while neighbours remain on may instead point to a service connection or household fault. Neither pattern is conclusive by itself, so the supply at the individual property still needs to be considered if the cause is uncertain.
Check neighbours without approaching hazards
Ask nearby households whether they have lost power and note whether street lighting is out, if it is safe to do so. Do not go near a fallen cable, damaged pole, open cabinet or equipment making noise. Keep others away and report dangerous damage to the electricity network operator. Do not attempt to move a wire or open a street cabinet. If the outage is widespread, the network operator is the team that investigates and restores the external supply.
How we distinguish a property fault
An electrician can check the meter and incoming supply, inspect the consumer unit and establish whether electricity is reaching the property installation. If the supply is present but the consumer unit has tripped or internal circuits are dead, the fault may be within the home. If supply is missing before the installation and nearby properties are also affected, the evidence points outward to the network. Engineers do not repair the public distribution network. We explain the boundary and the next contact rather than charging for a repair that cannot be done.
What to report to the operator
When you contact the network operator, give your address, the time the power went off, whether neighbouring homes are affected and any visible damage. Follow its outage updates and safety instructions. If there is a damaged external cable or a risk to the public, report it as an urgent hazard. The operator controls repairs to the local network and can advise on estimated restoration where information is available. An in-home visit cannot speed up a street repair, but can confirm whether your own supply is also affected.
If only your home is affected
If neighbours have power, or if the meter supply is present, a property-side fault becomes more likely. It could be a failed main switch, tripped protective device, loose connection or circuit fault. The engineer checks the consumer unit and relevant circuits, isolates faults and explains a safe repair before work begins. Do not repeatedly reset a switch that trips, remove meter covers or touch exposed wiring. If you smell burning or notice heat, keep clear and arrange urgent help.
While the street is without power
Use torches rather than candles and keep refrigerators and freezers closed where possible. Unplug sensitive electronics if practical, then leave the supply alone until it returns. When power is restored, wait a short time before switching several high-demand appliances on together. If one circuit or appliance trips after restoration, leave it off and arrange a property-side check. Do not use a generator indoors or connect one to household wiring without suitable equipment and professional advice.
Need help checking your address?
If it is unclear whether the outage is external or local, book an electrician to check the meter-side supply and home installation. Same-day and emergency appointments may be available. You pay a booking fee when booking; labour is charged hourly according to how quickly you need the visit. We provide the full work cost before starting and ask for your approval.
Keep the fridge closed during an outage
Keeping refrigerator and freezer doors shut helps retain cold while the operator works on the supply. Use battery lights and avoid candles near furnishings. When power returns, check the consumer unit for a tripped circuit and leave it off if it trips again.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
If your street has lost power, the fault may sit on the electricity network rather than inside your home. We can check the property supply and consumer unit, compare the outage pattern with nearby homes and explain whether the network operator or a domestic electrician should take the next step.
What our customers say about our electrical service
4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews
Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights
Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about street power cut
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Should I report a street power cut?
Yes. Report a suspected network outage to the electricity network operator, especially if several homes are affected or external equipment is damaged. Keep clear of any fallen or exposed cable.
How can an electrician confirm the fault is outside?
They can ask whether neighbours are affected and test whether supply reaches your meter and consumer unit. If the interruption is before the property's installation, the network operator must investigate.
Could a street outage damage my home electrics?
An outage alone does not mean the installation is damaged. If a circuit trips or a burning smell, sparks or unusual behaviour appears when power returns, leave the affected circuit off and arrange a check.
What if only my address has lost power?
A service connection or in-home fault may be responsible. An electrician can check the incoming supply and consumer unit, then explain whether the operator or a property electrician should take the next step.')],
How is the visit and repair charged?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
