An overheating dryer announces itself in several ways: a cabinet that is hot to the touch, a burning or scorched smell, clothes that come out uncomfortably warm, the machine cutting out partway through and refusing to restart until it cools, or a thermal cut-out that has already tripped. Any of these means heat is building up faster than the dryer can remove it, and the mechanisms that should prevent that are airflow and thermal protection.

If there is smoke, flames or an active burning smell

Stop the cycle and do not open the door wide, because a rush of air can feed a fire inside the drum. If you can reach the plug safely, with dry hands and without touching damaged cable, unplug it. If there is smoke or flame, leave the room, close the door behind you, get everyone out and call 999. Do not attempt to put out a dryer fire with water. Once the fire service has dealt with it, do not reconnect the appliance; it needs assessment before any further use.

What causes excess heat

The most common cause is restricted airflow. A clogged lint filter, a lint-choked condenser, a crushed flexible vent hose, a blocked external flap or a vent run packed with lint all reduce the volume of air moving through the drum. Less air means the same heater output raises the temperature instead of being carried away. The second common cause is a thermostat or thermal cut-out that has failed closed or drifted, so the heater stays on longer than intended. Less often a relay sticks closed, a fan blade is broken or detached, or the board loses control of the heater.

Why this matters beyond the repair

Lint is highly flammable, and a dryer combines lint, heat and a moving air stream. That is why manufacturers fit thermal cut-outs and why restricted venting is treated as a fire risk rather than a performance issue. A machine that has overheated may also have scorched wiring, a distorted drum seal or a damaged heater housing that is not obvious from outside. We inspect for secondary damage, not just the part that failed.

What we check on the visit

We measure airflow through the filter, condenser and vent, inspect the full vent route including the outside termination, test the thermostats and thermal cut-out at their operating temperatures, check the heater relay and board output, and confirm the fan is intact and turning. The cabinet interior is inspected for lint accumulation and heat damage. Where a thermal cut-out has blown, we treat it as a symptom and find out why before replacing it.

Repairs, parts and limits

Clearing a blocked vent, replacing a filter housing, fitting a thermostat or a fan blade are all routine. A heater assembly may need replacement if it has been distorted by heat. Parts are quoted separately once identified, and availability depends on the model. We will not fit a thermal cut-out and leave the underlying restriction in place, because that simply resets the same hazard. If the vent route itself is badly designed, we will explain what needs changing.

Reducing the risk from now on

Clean the lint filter before or after every load rather than when you remember. Empty the condenser water container and clean the condenser as the manufacturer instructs. Have the vent run cleaned periodically, particularly if it is long, flexible or has multiple bends. Never run the dryer with the door left ajar to "let heat out", and never stack items on top of it or dry items soaked in oil, solvent or wax.

Arranging the visit

Tell us exactly what you have noticed: how hot the cabinet gets, whether the machine cuts out, whether the plug or cable is warm, and whether there is any smell. If there has been smoke or flame, say so, because the appliance may need to be replaced rather than repaired.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A dryer that runs far hotter than it should is one of the few appliance faults worth taking seriously straight away. Excess heat usually means airflow is restricted or the device that should switch the heater off is not doing its job, and both conditions are linked to lint fires. Stop using the machine until it has been looked at, and read the safety notes below before you do anything else.

Questions people ask about overheating tumble dryer

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I keep using the dryer if it is hot but not smoking?

No. Stop using it until it has been checked. Excess heat indicates restricted airflow or failed thermal protection, and both are linked to dryer fires. Unplug it only if the plug is accessible and undamaged.

What should I do if I see smoke or flames?

Leave the property, close the door behind you and call 999. Do not open the dryer door fully and do not throw water on it. Do not reconnect the appliance afterwards; it needs professional assessment first.

What do you inspect during the visit?

We check airflow through the filter, condenser and vent, and inspect the vent route and outside flap. We also test the thermostats and thermal cut-out, verify the fan and heater relay, and look for lint build-up or heat damage inside the cabinet.

Will replacing the thermal cut-out solve it?

Not on its own. A cut-out that has tripped is usually reporting a problem elsewhere, most often restricted airflow or a thermostat fault. We find and correct the cause before fitting a new one.

How much will the work cost?

The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted for your approval before work starts, and any parts are identified and priced separately.
