Modern dryers do not simply count down a timer. They advance when the programme's conditions are met: a temperature reached, a moisture level detected, a duration elapsed, or a sensor confirming the drum is turning. If one of those signals never arrives, the machine waits, and the cycle appears to hang. Older machines use a mechanical or electromechanical timer that can jam or lose its contacts, which produces a similar symptom by a different route.
Describing the stall accurately
Note where the cycle stops: straight after start, once the drum is warm, during cool-down, or at the very end. A stall before the drum turns suggests the start sequence. A stall once warm often points to a thermostat or sensor that never reports the expected temperature. A stall at the end suggests the anti-crease or cool-down stage is not completing. Any error code is worth writing down, and so is whether the display keeps counting while the drum does nothing.
Safe things to try
Turn the machine off at the socket for a minute and restart it on a different programme, which clears a latched fault on some models. Check that the door is fully latched, since a door switch that opens momentarily can pause the sequence. Confirm the water container is not full on a condensing model, as some machines pause and wait. Do not open the console or attempt to reset the board by disconnecting internal plugs.
What we check during the visit
We observe the machine through a full programme where practical, measure the temperature as it rises, test the thermostats and the moisture sensor circuit, and check the door switch for intermittent operation. On machines with an electromechanical timer we test the motor and contacts. On electronic models we check the board's inputs and outputs and look for stored fault codes. If the board is receiving good signals and not acting on them, that narrows the fault to the board.
Typical causes
A thermostat that never reaches its switching point. A moisture sensor that stays at one reading, so the machine never decides the load is dry. A failing timer motor. A door switch with an intermittent contact. A board with a failed output stage. Occasionally a programme that was never correctly selected, or a delay-start setting left active, which is a setting rather than a fault.
Repairs and their value
Thermostats, door switches and timer motors are modest repairs. Boards are costly and model-specific, and availability is the deciding factor on older machines. We quote before ordering and will tell you honestly if the repair no longer makes economic sense. Where a board is unavailable, replacement of the appliance may be the practical answer.
Safety and running the machine in the meantime
If the machine stalls while hot and does not enter cool-down, stop using it. Continued heating without the cycle progressing is precisely the condition that overheats components. Unplug it if the plug is accessible and undamaged. Do not leave a stalled dryer running unattended, and do not repeatedly restart it hoping it will complete.
After the repair
Run a full programme and check that it advances through every stage, including cool-down, and that the drum stops when it should. Time the cycle so you have a baseline. If the same stage stalls again, tell us which one, because that is a strong clue.
Booking the visit
Tell us the programme selected, exactly where it stalls, whether the display keeps counting and any error code. Give the brand, model and approximate age. Mention if the fault is intermittent, since that changes how much time we allow for observation.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A programme that refuses to move on, sitting on the same stage for hours or looping back, leaves you with a machine that runs but never finishes. Advancing through a cycle depends on time, temperature and moisture readings, and a stall in any of those leaves the sequence waiting. The visit tests each input so the actual cause is identified.

Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.
Job: Toaster Not Working

Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about program cycle not advancing
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I reset the dryer myself?
You can switch it off at the socket for a minute and try a different programme, which clears a latched fault on some models. Do not open the console or disconnect internal plugs, and never leave a stalled machine running unattended.
What makes a cycle stop advancing?
Usually a thermostat that never reports the expected temperature, a moisture sensor stuck at one reading, a failing timer motor, an intermittent door switch or a board output fault. Testing each input identifies which one.
Is a stalled cycle a safety concern?
It can be. If the machine keeps heating without progressing to cool-down, components overheat. Stop the cycle, unplug the machine if the plug is safe to reach, and arrange for it to be checked.
Will you have to watch a whole cycle?
Where practical we observe the machine through the stage where it stalls, because intermittent faults often only appear under real conditions. We also test the inputs directly, which frequently identifies the fault without a full cycle.
How is the price calculated?
The booking fee is paid when booking, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost and you approve it before any work starts, with parts identified and quoted separately.
