Loss of suction is the most common vacuum complaint and the most frequently misdiagnosed. People replace filters, then bags, then the machine, without ever finding the actual restriction. Suction depends on a continuous sealed path from the floor head through the hose, wand, bin and filters to the motor, and a fault anywhere along it has the same effect at the carpet.
Where airflow gets lost
Blockages are the most common cause: a sock in the wand, hair wrapped around the brush bar, a wad of dust at the bin inlet, a foreign object in the hose. Filters are second: a washable filter that has never been washed, or a HEPA filter past its life, restricts flow badly. Third is sealing: a split hose, a perished bin gasket, a cracked wand collar or a bin that is not seated properly lets air in and reduces suction at the head. Fourth is the brush bar, which may be turning but worn smooth, so it flicks nothing up even when suction is fine. Fifth, and least common, is the motor itself losing speed.
Symptom patterns that narrow it down
Good suction at the hose but nothing at the floor head points to the head, the collar or the brush bar. Good suction at the machine but weak at the hose points to the hose or wand. Weak everywhere points to filters, the bin seal or the motor. A machine that screams at a higher pitch than usual is often blocked and running with restricted flow, which makes the motor work harder and run hotter. A burning smell or a hot exhaust alongside poor suction means stop using it.
What the visit involves
We check the air path in order: floor head, brush bar and belt, wand, hose, bin inlet, bin seal, pre-motor filter, post-motor filter and the motor inlet. Each section is tested by isolating it, which locates the restriction precisely. Filters are assessed for condition, not just cleanliness, since a filter that has been washed too many times loses its structure. Seals are checked for hardness and splits. The brush bar is checked for wear, the belt for tension, and the motor for speed and for signs of overheating.
What is worth repairing
Filters, belts, brush bars, hoses and bin seals are all replaceable and inexpensive, and replacing them often restores a vacuum to full performance. A cracked wand or a failed collar is a modest part. Motor and PCB faults are the point at which the economics change: on a mid-range vacuum a motor replacement can be viable where the part is available, and on a budget machine it usually is not. Battery and charging faults on cordless models are a separate question again, and we will be clear about which parts are available for your model.
Cleaning versus repair
Emptying the bin, washing washable filters as the maker instructs and cutting hair off the brush bar are genuine user maintenance and worth doing before booking. What cleaning cannot fix is a split hose, a hardened seal, a worn brush bar or a motor that has lost speed. Airflow problems often have both elements — a blockage plus a tired filter — which is why both get checked.
Safety
Unplug corded vacuums before any inspection, and remove the battery from cordless models. Never put water into the motor housing. Do not run a vacuum with a wet filter fitted. If the machine smells of burning, sparks, or the exhaust is unusually hot, stop using it: restricted airflow overheats motors and is a genuine fire risk. Cordless batteries that are swollen or hot should not be charged.
Booking
Book online with the make and model, and say whether suction is weak everywhere or only at the head. The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work begins, with any parts identified and quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A vacuum that has stopped picking up is often not broken at all: a blockage, a clogged filter or a worn brush bar can make a sound machine feel finished. Because suction depends on the whole air path being sealed and clear, finding the loss takes a systematic check rather than a guess. We trace it from the floor head to the motor and tell you what is actually wrong.

Questions people ask about vacuum cleaner loss of suction
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I just clean the filters first?
Yes, and it is the sensible first step. Wash washable filters as the maker instructs, let them dry fully, empty the bin and clear hair from the brush bar. If suction is still poor, the cause is elsewhere or a part has failed.
What gets checked on the visit?
Floor head, brush bar and belt, wand, hose, bin inlet and seal, pre- and post-motor filters, and the motor inlet — each isolated in turn so the restriction is located rather than guessed at. That sequence usually locates the restriction within the first few checks.
Is a blocked vacuum dangerous?
It can overheat the motor and, on some models, pose a fire risk, especially with a hot exhaust or a burning smell. Stop using it if you notice heat, a change in pitch or any smell.
Suction is fine at the hose but poor at the floor head. Why?
That points to the head itself: a worn brush bar, a blocked head inlet, a split collar or a head that is not sealing against the carpet. It is usually a part replacement rather than a motor problem.
How is the cost worked out?
The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We confirm the full cost and you approve it before any work starts; parts needed are identified and quoted separately.
