A burning smell is the oven equivalent of a smoke alarm: it is information, and acting on it early is always cheaper and safer than waiting. Some burning smells are benign, baked-on residue for instance, but an acrid, electrical smell is not benign, and the difficulty is telling which is which without opening anything. That is the job of a proper diagnosis.

If the smell is strong right now

Switch the oven off at the isolator if it is safe to do so, and leave it off. If you ever see flames or the smell is accompanied by smoke pouring from the appliance, get everyone out and call 999; do not tackle it yourself. If at any point you smell gas as well, that is a separate emergency: no electrical switches or appliances, ventilate if safe, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside, and do not re-enter until advised safe. Once the immediate event has passed, the oven stays off until assessed.

Two very different smells

A greasy, food-adjacent smell usually means residue: fat and debris carbonising on the floor, trays or elements. It tends to appear at the start of cooking and ease off, and a thorough clean, once the oven is cold, often ends it. An acrid, sharp smell, often compared to hot plastic or singed wiring, points to insulation, wiring or a component overheating, and no amount of cleaning will touch it. That smell is a stop-using signal and the oven should stay off until an engineer has traced it. Learning this distinction is genuinely useful, but never gamble on it.

What we do during the diagnosis

With the appliance safely isolated we inspect the cavity and internals for carbonised residue, then the elements, wiring, connections and insulation for overheating evidence such as blistered element surfaces, scorched terminals or heat-damaged wiring. We test the components electrically where the evidence points that way, and we ask about the smell's pattern: when it appears, at which settings, and whether it is strengthening over time, because a worsening smell is itself diagnostic. Every finding is explained to you in plain English before any repair is quoted.

What the repair usually involves

Residue-related smells are resolved by proper cleaning, which we can advise on safely rather than sell you. Component faults, such as a partially failed element or heat-damaged connection, are repaired with the correct parts for your model, quoted separately from labour. Where overheating has damaged wiring, the damage is repaired properly rather than tidied, because a burning smell event always leaves a cause that must be dealt with. On older ovens with costlier faults we will give you an honest view of repair versus replacement before you commit.

Fuel type, as ever

For electric ovens the diagnosis and repair sit within our electrical competence. If your oven is gas, gas-side components are strictly for a Gas Safe registered engineer and we never carry out gas work; we would assess the safely non-gas aspects, explain what we found and refer the gas side to a trusted Gas Safe partner we work closely with.

Booking your diagnosis

Contact us with your postcode, the oven's make, model and fuel type, and describe the smell: when it occurs, what it is like, and whether it has changed. We will arrange a prompt visit, trace the cause properly and quote any work for your approval before starting.

Do not be tempted to run the oven briefly to check whether the smell has gone. That approach risks turning a contained fault into a damaged one, and the diagnosis will establish the truth safely without any further use of the appliance.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A burning smell from an oven is a warning that deserves a prompt, careful response, not another dinner cooked through the smell. Questions people ask about burning smell from oven

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

The burning smell only happens at the start of cooking. Is that okay?

A greasy smell at start-up that eases off often means residue burning off, and a thorough clean when cold usually resolves it. But an acrid, sharp smell, or one that strengthens during use, points to overheating components and means the oven should stay off until diagnosed.

What will you check during the visit?

The cavity and trays for carbonised residue, the elements for blistering or partial failure, the wiring, terminals and insulation for heat damage, and how the components behave under test. You get a clear explanation of the source and a quoted price for any repair.

My oven smells of burning but works fine otherwise. Should I stop using it?

If the smell is acrid or electrical, yes, stop using it. A component can smell of burning while still functioning, which is precisely the stage when repair is cheapest and safest. A greasy smell after a spill is different and usually responds to cleaning.

My gas oven smells of burning. Can you help?

We can assess the safely non-gas aspects and explain what the evidence suggests, but any gas component must be handled by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and we never carry out gas work. We will refer you to a trusted Gas Safe partner we work closely with. Any smell of gas itself is a 0800 111 999 emergency.

How is the work priced?

You pay the booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, as shorter notice costs more. Any repair is fully quoted including parts identified separately, and nothing starts until you have approved that price.
