A gas hob that won't light is one of those faults with a reassuring number of mundane explanations — and one reason to take it seriously. Because the appliance combines gas and electricity, the first task is knowing which side the fault sits on, and that's exactly where a proper assessment earns its keep.
First, the question that matters
If you can smell gas at any point, stop reading and treat it as an emergency. Don't operate light switches or electrical appliances, don't light anything, open doors and windows if it's safe to do so, turn the gas off at the meter only if you can reach it safely and know how, then leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 — available around the clock. Stay out until you're advised it's safe. A suspected gas leak is not a booking; it's an emergency call.
With the smell question settled, a hob that clicks but won't light usually points to one of a handful of causes: burner ports blocked by spillovers, burner caps seated wrongly after cleaning, a faulty or dirty igniter electrode, a failed ignition module, or wiring and connections on the spark circuit. Sometimes it's simply moisture from a recent clean temporarily bridging the igniters — a symptom that can dry out on its own.
What we can safely assess
Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and does not carry out gas work of any kind — we don't service, repair, adjust, disconnect or reconnect gas appliances or anything on the gas side. What we can do is assess the genuinely electrical parts: whether the igniters spark on every burner, whether the ignition wiring and module are sound, and whether the fault looks electrical or gas-related. That assessment is safe, useful and often resolves the fault when the problem is electrical.
Where testing points to the gas side — burner supply, valves, or anything involving combustion — we stop there, explain what the evidence shows, and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer with whom we work closely. They will diagnose, repair and commission the appliance properly, and their quote covers their gas work. You get one clear picture rather than two contradictory ones.
Safe checks you can do
With the hob cold and the pan supports cool, you can remove burner caps and grids and clean spillovers from the burner ports, following the manufacturer's instructions, then re-seat the caps properly — a misaligned cap is a classic cause of clicking without flame. Don't go beyond the maker's user-serviceable guidance, don't poke into gas ports with wires, and never test the hob if you smell gas at any stage.
What a referral actually looks like
People sometimes expect a referral to mean a phone number and good luck. Ours is more joined-up: we tell you what our assessment found, pass on the relevant detail, and the Gas Safe engineer we recommend quotes and carries out the gas work directly with you. You're not paying twice for the same diagnosis — our electrical assessment stands on its own, and theirs covers what only they may legally touch. If the fault turns out to be purely electrical, we quote the repair ourselves and it stays entirely within our scope.
Booking the assessment
Tell us the hob's brand and model, whether every burner fails or only some, whether it clicks, and whether the fault started after cleaning or a spill. Book by phone or website; the booking fee is paid when you book, the hourly rate depends on how soon you need us, and any electrical repair we can safely carry out is quoted in full and approved by you before work begins.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work

A gas hob that clicks but won't light, or lights only with a match, is a common and understandably worrying fault. Some causes are electrical and safely within our scope; others involve the gas side, which only a Gas Safe registered engineer may work on. We diagnose what can be safely assessed and make sure gas faults reach the right engineer.

Questions people ask about gas hob not igniting
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can you repair my gas hob?
We cannot carry out gas work — Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered. We can safely assess the electrical aspects, such as ignition spark and wiring, and where the fault is gas-related we refer you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer who repairs and commissions the appliance properly.
What if I smell gas around the hob?
Don't book us — treat it as an emergency. Don't operate electrical switches or appliances, open doors and windows if safe to do so, turn the gas off at the meter only if you can do so safely, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Do not re-enter until advised it's safe.
Why won't my gas hob ignite?
Causes range from blocked or dirty burner ports and faulty igniter electrodes to ignition module failures, worn wiring or simply moisture after cleaning. Some are electrical, some involve the burners themselves — testing establishes which before anyone repairs anything.
Can I clean the burners myself?
You can lift off pan supports and burner caps and clean them with the gas isolated and the hob cold, following the manufacturer's instructions — but don't dismantle anything beyond the maker's user-serviceable guidance, and never use the hob if you smell gas afterwards.
How does payment work for this visit?
A booking fee is paid when you book and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. Any electrical repair we can safely do is quoted in full and approved by you before work starts; gas work is quoted by the Gas Safe engineer we refer you to.
