Dishwashers dry in one of two ways. Condensation drying uses the heat of the final rinse: the load stays hot, the stainless tub cools faster, and moisture condenses on the walls and runs away. Fan-assisted drying adds a fan and often a zeolite or heat-exchanger system to pull moisture out actively. Both depend on the load being genuinely hot at the end of the rinse.

Start with the cheap explanations

Before a repair is considered, these account for a large share of wet loads:

  • No rinse aid, or the dose set too low. Rinse aid breaks the surface tension so water sheets off rather than clinging in droplets.
  • A short or eco programme. Eco cycles often finish cooler by design and rely more on condensation time.
  • Opening the door immediately. Condensation drying needs the load to sit and cool; opening straight away releases the humid air onto the dishes.
  • Overloading or nesting. Items that trap water, especially plastic and upturned cups, hold water regardless of the machine.
  • Plastic items. Plastic has low thermal mass and does not hold heat, so it dries poorly in any condensation machine. That is a materials issue, not a fault.

What the machine controls

If rinse aid is present and correctly dosed and the load is still wet, the causes narrow:

  • Final rinse not hot enough, because the heater or sensor is failing. This is the same fault family as a cold wash and is measured the same way.
  • Rinse aid dispenser not dosing, because the valve is blocked or the reservoir is not drawing.
  • Fan failure on fan-assisted models, which leaves moisture in the tub.
  • Blocked or saturated drying unit on zeolite models, which is unusual but possible.
  • Door not opening on machines with an auto-open drying feature, which is often a failed actuator.
  • Vent or airway obstruction, common where the machine sits tight under a worktop with no clearance.

How we diagnose it

We run a cycle and measure the final rinse temperature, which separates a heating fault from everything else. We check the rinse aid reservoir and dispenser operation, confirm the dose setting, inspect the vent path, and test the fan or door actuator on models that have them. Where the machine has a drying unit, we check it for blockage.

Because a heating fault also affects wash quality, we ask whether dishes are clean but wet, or both dirty and wet. Clean but wet points at drying specifically; dirty and wet points at the heater.

What we will not claim

We cannot make plastic items dry like china, and no repair changes that. We also will not sell a drying unit or fan before confirming the final rinse temperature is correct, because a cold rinse will defeat any drying system.

Parts, cost and honesty

Fans, actuators and dispensers are model-specific. Some are available quickly, some need ordering. We identify the part against your model and quote it separately, and if the machine is older we will tell you when the cost does not justify the fix.

Safety

Work on the heater, fan or dispenser requires the power off, and water off where the sump area is involved. If the machine has tripped the electrics, leave it isolated. If there is water in the base tray, that is the priority rather than drying performance.

Aftercare

After a repair, run a cycle on the programme you normally use and leave the door closed for twenty minutes at the end before unloading. Check the rinse aid level monthly and set the dose according to your water hardness. If your machine has an auto-open door, confirm it releases at the end of the cycle rather than staying latched.

Booking

Tell us whether the dishes are clean but wet or both dirty and wet, which programme you use, and whether rinse aid is filled. Those three answers narrow it quickly. Book online, pay the booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A wet load at the end of a cycle is a mild irritation that often turns out to have a simple cause, and occasionally points at a failed component. Rinse aid, the final rinse temperature and the drying method your machine uses all matter. Working out which is responsible takes less time than living with it.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle

Good job, slightly late

Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.

Job: Toaster Not Working

No mess left behind

Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about dishes not drying properly

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Do I need rinse aid if I use all-in-one tablets?

Usually yes. The rinse aid in combined tablets is limited, and machines with a separate rinse aid dispenser generally dry better when it is filled and dosed properly. It is a cheap thing to rule out first.

Why are only the plastic items wet?

Plastic does not hold heat, so condensation drying works poorly on it. That is a property of the material rather than a fault, and no repair changes it. Placing plastics on the lower rack can help slightly.

What will you check?

We measure the final rinse temperature and check the rinse aid reservoir and dispenser dosing. We also inspect the vent path, and test the fan or auto-open door actuator where the model has one.

Is a wet load a safety issue?

Not usually, but if the machine is tripping the electrics or there is water in the base, stop using it. A cold rinse combined with poor drying can also encourage smells and bacterial growth in the tub.

How much will it cost?

The booking fee is taken when you book. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work begins, and any fan, actuator or dispenser is identified and quoted separately.
