Distorted intercom audio — crackling, buzzing, hum, or speech that fades in and out — is one of the most common door entry faults, and it rarely means the whole system needs replacing. In most cases the distortion has a single physical cause somewhere along the speech path, and finding it is a matter of systematic testing rather than guesswork.

What distortion usually means

Crackling that comes and goes is the classic signature of a poor connection: a corroded or loose terminal, a damaged cable, or dirty contacts in the handset cradle or the entrance panel button. A steady hum or buzz often points to electrical interference, frequently caused by the system's power supply deteriorating or by unshielded wiring running alongside mains cables. Speech that is loud but unintelligible usually means a failing speaker or microphone element — the cone or diaphragm has degraded over years of use. Water ingress into an entrance panel is another frequent cause, especially where the panel's sealing has perished, and it produces its own distinctive gurgling distortion.

How we trace it

We begin by listening to the fault from both ends: at your handset and at the entrance panel. Distortion that only appears on one side points to that handset or its local wiring; distortion in both directions suggests a shared connection, the panel or the supply. We then inspect and re-test the terminal connections, examine the handset speaker and microphone, check the entrance panel for moisture or corrosion, and look at the power supply's output. Where the system allows, swapping in a known-good handset quickly confirms or rules out the unit itself. This methodical approach means the repair targets the real cause rather than the symptom.

Repairs we typically carry out

Common fixes include cleaning and re-terminating connections, replacing a corroded terminal block, fitting a new handset speaker or a complete replacement handset, drying out and resealing a wet entrance panel, or replacing a failing power supply. All parts are quoted separately so you know exactly what you are approving. If your building's system is managed by a landlord or agent, permission is usually needed before we work on shared equipment, and we will not proceed on communal systems without it. We also never force communal doors or bypass security to reach a panel — access has to be arranged properly.

What you can try yourself

There is very little safe DIY here beyond the basics: check that any volume control is not set too low, and reseat a plug-in handset in its cradle. Do not open the handset or the entrance panel — intercom speech circuits are sensitive to how connections are remade, and an improvised joint often makes distortion worse while hiding the original fault.

Honest limits

Distortion in very old systems can have more than one contributing cause, and where several elements are degraded we will explain the options: repair the worst faults now, or plan a system replacement. We diagnose before quoting, so we cannot give a firm repair cost or timescale until we have tested the system. Where interference comes from other equipment on the same supply, we will tell you what we found even if the solution lies outside the intercom itself.

When to call

Book a visit when speech is crackly, buzzy or faded enough to make visitor identification difficult, when distortion has been getting worse over weeks, or when it appears only in wet weather — that pattern strongly suggests water ingress that will not fix itself. When booking, tell us the system make if known, whether other flats are affected, and whether the distortion is one-sided or both directions.

A crackling intercom is an annoyance until it becomes a security risk. Get in touch and we will find where the distortion enters and quote a clean, lasting repair.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

An intercom you can barely hear turns a simple visitor call into guesswork, and guessing who is at the door is not a position anyone should be in. Distorted audio usually points to a specific, findable cause. We will test the speech path end to end, identify where the distortion enters, and quote a repair you can approve with confidence.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about intercom distorted audio

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is there anything I can try before calling about distorted audio?

Check any volume setting and reseat a plug-in handset in its cradle — those are safe. Do not open the handset or panel or remake wiring joints yourself; poor DIY joints often add distortion and make the real fault harder to find.

What do you test during a distorted-audio visit?

We listen to the fault from both the handset and the panel to see which side it comes from, then inspect connections, test the speaker and microphone elements, check the panel for moisture or corrosion and examine the power supply. Once we have found the cause we quote the repair before starting.

Could distortion mean my intercom is unsafe?

Intercom audio faults are not usually a safety hazard, but if the system is buzzing loudly, smells of burning or is tripping anything electrical, stop using it and mention that when you call. A deteriorating power supply can occasionally be the cause and needs attention sooner rather than later.

Why is my intercom worse in wet weather?

That pattern usually means water is getting into the external entrance panel through perished seals or damaged gaskets. We can dry out the panel and reseal it as part of a repair, and we will quote that work separately before carrying it out.

What will the repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us to attend. After diagnosis we quote the full cost before any work starts, with parts listed separately, and the repair only goes ahead once you approve it.
