A gate with no power at all behaves very differently from a gate with a faulty motor or remote. Nothing lights up, nothing beeps, no receiver LED blinks — the system is simply dark. The reassuring part is that total silence usually means the problem is in the electrical supply, and supply faults are often simpler and cheaper than machinery faults. The skill is in tracing power safely and finding where it stops.
Where Gate Power Comes From
Most electric gates are fed from a fused spur or dedicated circuit at your consumer unit, running through buried or ducted cable to an outdoor isolator near the gate, and then into the control panel. Inside, a transformer drops the voltage for the electronics, and a battery backup keeps the gate working through power cuts — for a while. A fault anywhere on that path, or in the property's own electrics upstream, can darken the whole system.
Common Causes of Total Power Loss
The everyday causes are a tripped breaker or RCD (often after a storm or water ingress), a blown fuse in the spur, an isolator that has been knocked or seized, and a failed transformer. Beyond those we find water in the control panel or ducts after flooding, rodent damage to buried cable, cable strikes from gardening or building work, corroded terminations at the outdoor isolator, and — commonly overlooked — flat or failed battery backups that let a brownout take the whole system down.
The Battery Backup Question
If your gate has battery backup, a mains failure should not leave it completely dead; it should keep working (sometimes at reduced speed) until the batteries flatten. If the system is dark even though the house has power, flat or dead backup batteries are a prime suspect — batteries are a consumable, not a defect. We test battery health properly during the visit, and replacement batteries are quoted separately if they are due.
How We Trace the Fault
We work from the consumer unit outward: confirming the circuit state, testing the spur and isolator, then the control panel's incoming supply and its transformer output. Where the cable run between house and gate is the suspect, we test it methodically rather than digging on speculation. We also look for the reasons behind a fault — a duct holding water, a junction that has corroded, a panel that has taken rain — because fixing a blown fuse without fixing why it blew is a booking fee you will pay twice.
The Boundary With Your Property's Electrics
If the fault turns out to be in the consumer unit or house wiring rather than the gate system, we will tell you clearly where that boundary sits, because that work belongs to an electrician's scope and we will say so rather than blur it. What we do guarantee is a straight answer about which side of the line the fault is on.
Safety Around a Dead Gate
A gate without power still has weight, springs and stored energy, and its manual release behaves differently from a powered one. Use manual release only strictly per the manufacturer's instructions, and only if a confident adult can do it safely — never with anyone in the gate's path. Do not open the control panel yourself: even a dark panel can hold live parts until the batteries and capacitors discharge. And never bypass, tape over or disable safety devices in an attempt to get a powerless gate moving.
After Power Is Restored
Once power is back we do not just leave it there: we test the gate through full cycles from every control method, check the battery backup is charging, verify photocells and safety edges respond to a real obstruction test, and confirm force settings are correct. If water ingress caused the fault, we will show you where it got in and what we did to keep it out.
When to Call Us
Book a visit whenever the system is completely dead, and mention if the failure followed a storm, a power cut, flooding or nearby building work. Same-day visits may be available. If your house lights are also affected, say so — it changes where we start looking.
Booking Your Visit
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the repair is quoted and approved before we start, with parts such as fuses, transformers or batteries quoted separately. Book by phone or through our website.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Booked 14+ days ahead
£25 booking fee
then £85 per hour of labour
Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.
Booked within 48 hours
£100 booking fee
then £65 per hour of labour
For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.
Same-day call-out
£220 booking fee
then £45 per hour of labour
Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
When the whole gate system goes dead — no lights, no beeps, no response from anything — the fault is usually in the supply rather than the machinery, which is often better news than it feels. Our visit traces power properly and safely from the mains to the operator.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service
5 out of 5 from 7 reviews
Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about electric gate power failure
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I check the power supply to my gate myself?
You can safely check whether the gate's breaker or RCD at the consumer unit has tripped and whether the outdoor isolator is switched on. Do not open the control panel, test inside it or reset a breaker repeatedly that keeps tripping — repeated resets on a persistent fault are unsafe. Beyond the obvious switches, tracing power is engineer work.
What do you check when a gate has no power?
We trace from the consumer unit through the spur and isolator to the control panel, test the transformer and incoming supply, and inspect cable runs, ducts and terminations for water, corrosion or damage. We also test the battery backup, since flat batteries can darken a system even when the mains is fine.
My gate has backup batteries — why is it still dead?
Backup batteries are a consumable and they age. If they are flat or failed, a mains interruption can leave the gate completely dark rather than limping along at reduced speed. We test battery health during the visit, and if they are due for replacement they are quoted as parts, separate from the labour.
Could the fault be in my house electrics rather than the gate?
It can be, and we will tell you honestly if it is. The gate's own circuit, panel and cabling are our scope; problems in the consumer unit or the wider house wiring belong to an electrician's work, and we will explain the boundary clearly rather than charge you for work outside it.
How is this visit charged?
You pay a booking fee when you book your visit. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost of the repair is quoted and approved before any work starts. Parts such as fuses, batteries or a transformer are quoted separately.
