Why taps work loose
Taps are fixed to the sink or worktop through a hole with a back nut underneath, and that fixing is under constant leverage every time you move the handle. Repeated use, vibration from water hammer, or a back nut that was never fully tightened lets the tap rock. Undermount sinks and thin composite worktops are particularly prone, and a swan-neck tap with a long spout puts extra leverage on a small fixing footprint.
Why it gets worse if ignored
Movement in the base works the supply connections loose too. The flexi tails or copper connectors under the sink flex with every rock, and the compression joints slowly weep onto the cabinet floor. Because the leak is hidden and small at first, it is often only noticed when the cupboard base is stained or swollen. The tap hole seal also degrades, so water from the surface finds its way under the sink instead of into the basin. Fixing a loose tap fitting early is a short job; repairing a soaked cabinet is not.
How we diagnose the problem
We check whether the movement is in the tap's base fixing, in the tail connector, or inside the valve itself, as the symptoms feel similar from above. Under the sink we inspect the back nut, the securing plate or washers, the supply connections and the condition of the worktop or sink around the hole. We test the supply pipes for movement and check for any existing water damage so you know the full picture before we quote.
How we fix it
A loose tap fitting fix is matched to what we find. Where the back nut has simply slackened, we tighten it with the correct tool through the limited access under the sink and reseal the tap hole. Where the fixing cannot grip, we fit a spreader plate or reinforcing washers to spread the load, replace corroded fixings, and renew the O-ring or putty seal. If a supply connection is weeping we remake the joint with fresh fibre washers or a new compression olive. Most jobs take about an hour at our 90.00 rate. If you have been searching for a tap repair plumber near me, we cover your area and can usually attend within a day or two.
What the visit involves
We protect the cupboard base with sheeting, work through the tap hole and from underneath with tools made for tight spaces, and test the fixing after every adjustment by working the handle as you would at home. Before we leave we run both supplies, wipe every joint with dry tissue to catch the faintest seep, and clean the area down. You are left with a tap that does not move and a dry cupboard floor.
Keeping the tap secure
Do not over-tighten handles to compensate for a rocking tap; it stresses the valve. Wipe the base dry and glance under the sink occasionally for early signs of damp. If a tap was recently installed and moved from day one, the fixing method rather than the tap is usually at fault, and a reinforcing plate solves it permanently.
When to call us
Book a visit if the tap rocks when you use it, if the supply pipes under the sink move with the tap, if you can see staining on the cupboard floor, or if the seal around the base has broken. These faults rarely improve on their own and always get more expensive with time.
Book a call-out
Send us the booking form or call the office and we will arrange a convenient slot. You will get a fixed price before we begin, a plumber with the right tools for awkward under-sink access, and a tap that is rock solid and leak-free when we hand it back to you.

How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A tap that rocks in its base is more than an annoyance; the movement eventually breaks the seal and lets water seep under the sink. We diagnose the cause of a loose tap fitting, re-secure the tap with the right fixings, renew seals where needed, and check every connection for leaks before we leave.

Questions people ask about loose tap connection repair
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Why is my tap loose at the base?
Usually the back nut underneath has worked loose, or the fixing cannot grip the sink or worktop material. Heavy spouts and daily use both contribute. We identify the exact cause before repairing it.
Can a loose tap cause a leak?
Yes. Movement stresses the supply connections and the base seal, and slow drips often appear under the sink where they go unnoticed. Securing the tap early prevents this.
How much does a loose tap fitting repair cost?
The standard repair takes about an hour and is charged at 90.00, agreed before we start. If additional parts such as a spreader plate or new connectors are needed we quote them first.
Will you need to remove the sink?
Almost never. Taps are accessed from above with tools working from underneath, and we have tools designed for tight under-sink spaces. Removal is only considered in unusual cases and only with your agreement.
How quickly can you attend?
For a loose tap fitting we can normally book you in within one or two working days, with evening and weekend slots available. Tell us if the tap is actively leaking and we will prioritise it.
