Heavy duty wall fixing is less about strength and more about matching. The strongest anchor in the catalogue fails in the wrong wall, and the right fixing fails if the load was underestimated. So every heavy fixing job starts with two questions answered honestly: what is this wall actually made of, and how much does this item actually weigh? Everything else follows from those answers.
What counts as heavy duty
Wall-hung radiators, kitchen wall cabinets, large televisions, heavy mirrors, gym equipment and bike storage, boiler and heating brackets, shelving loaded with books or tools. What they share is consequence: when a heavy fixing fails, the item comes down with force, and the damage — to the wall, the item, and anything beneath it — is rarely small.
The assessment
First, the wall. Solid brick or block takes direct plugs and frame fixings. Lightweight aerated block takes special anchors. Plasterboard on a stud frame needs fixings that reach the timber, or anchors designed for the void — and heavy loads ideally land on the studs themselves, or on boarding added between them. Dot-and-dab board has a hidden gap that changes everything. Thermal or insulated linings are their own conversation.
Second, the load. Not just the item's weight but where it pulls — a cabinet hung by its back rail stresses fixings differently from a radiator hung on brackets, and a television on an extending arm multiplies the force when extended. Third, the fixings: type, quantity, spread, and whether the item's own mounting points allow proper distribution.
We also check for hidden pipes and cables before drilling, working to safe zones and stopping at anything unexpected — no check can guarantee nothing is concealed, so we drill with care.
How the fixing is done
Once the approach is agreed: holes drilled to exact size with the right bit, fixings matched to the substrate — masonry anchors, frame fixings into studs, cavity anchors or toggles into voids, resin-style anchors where a wall needs them — and the item lifted and fitted. Heavy items may need a second person for lifting, and we will say so when booking. Where a stud wall cannot carry a heavy item at the wanted position, options include repositioning to land on the frame, adding support boarding inside the wall, or choosing a floor-standing alternative — we discuss cost and practicality rather than forcing a fixing that will fail.
Limits, stated plainly
"Heavy duty" does not mean unlimited. Every wall has a capacity, and our job is to tell you honestly whether the wall can carry the item where you want it, and what the realistic options are if it cannot. We do not fit heavy items on walls we assess as unsuitable, and we do not pretend a plug into crumbly plaster is a heavy-duty fixing. Where the assessment reveals damp, damage, or older materials we suspect could contain asbestos, we stop and refer before continuing.
Preparation
Know the item's weight if you can — it is usually on the specification. Have the item, its brackets and its fixings available; customer-supplied items and brackets are normal, and we confirm what is needed at booking. Clear the work area and the floor below, because heavy items get manoeuvred.
Booking
Same-day visits may be available for straightforward jobs. Book at maintenance-men.com: you pay a booking fee when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost — including any additional support work — is quoted and approved before work starts. Fixings and materials are identified during assessment and quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Radiators, wall cabinets, large televisions and gym equipment all end up on walls — and walls fail the casually hung ones. Heavy duty fixing is about assessment before drilling: what the wall is made of, what the item weighs, and what fixing genuinely carries that load. We do that assessment as standard.

Questions people ask about heavy duty wall fixing
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is heavy duty fixing something I can do myself?
Sometimes — a solid brick wall with a well-chosen anchor is forgiving. The risks concentrate in plasterboard, dot-and-dab and lightweight block, where the right fixing is counter-intuitive and the wrong one fails under load. If the item is heavy enough to hurt someone falling, or the wall type is uncertain, having the fixing assessed first is worth it.
What do you assess before fixing something heavy?
Three things: the wall construction and its capacity, the item's weight and how it applies load, and the fixing type that genuinely suits both. We also check for likely hidden pipes and cables before drilling. If the wall cannot carry the item safely where you want it, we say so and discuss alternatives before anything is drilled.
Is there a limit on the weight you can fix to a wall?
Yes — the wall sets it, and 'unlimited' is never honest. Heavy loads may need fixings into the stud frame, additional boarding inside a partition, or a different mounting strategy entirely. Where the wall genuinely cannot carry the item, we will explain the realistic options rather than fit a fixing that will fail.
Do I need to supply the item, brackets and fixings?
Normally you supply the item and its brackets, and we confirm exactly what is needed when you book. Special fixings — cavity anchors, frame fixings, additional boarding — are identified during the assessment and can be quoted separately rather than assumed to be included.
How is heavy duty fixing priced?
A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the agreed work, including any additional support measures, is quoted before work starts and you approve it. Fixings and materials are identified and quoted separately during the assessment.
