What the job involves
A curtain pole seems simple until you are halfway through: the brackets need to clear the window opening by the right amount, sit high enough that the curtain hides the fixture, and land on something solid above a window frame — which is rarely blank, simple wall. We measure, mark, drill and fit curtain poles of the standard types, so the curtains hang properly, glide without snagging, and the pole stays exactly where we left it.
Position before drilling
Where the pole goes is the decision that shapes the whole room. Hang a pole close to the window frame and the window looks smaller; hang it wide and high and the window reads bigger, with the curtains framing it rather than covering it. As working rules, brackets usually sit around ten to fifteen centimetres above the top of the frame, and the pole extends beyond the window opening each side, so open curtains stack on the wall rather than the glass. We agree the exact position with you before marking, holding the pole up where it will go.
Then the wall: above many windows sits a lintel — steel or reinforced material that is hard to drill and not where you want screws — alongside brick, block or plasterboard. We assess what is there, choose fixing positions where solid material is, and plan around the usual cable and pipe routes near windows. We do not drill blind; if a planned position is not one we are satisfied about, we agree an alternative.
The fitting itself
Brackets are set from a level line — one bracket at a time by eye is how poles end up sloping — drilled and fixed for the wall type, with the pole assembled, sat in the brackets, and checked level along its length before the finials go on. Rings or gliders are checked for smooth travel: a pole that snags on day one has a cause, usually bracket alignment, and we fix it before we leave rather than after.
A word on weight: light voiles forgive a lot. Heavy lined curtains are a different fixing conversation, and if that is your plan, mention it when booking — extra brackets or stronger fixings may be wanted, agreed in the quote.
Who supplies what
You normally supply the pole, curtains and any rings; poles come with their own brackets and fixings, which we use where they suit the wall and substitute where they do not, with any substitutes agreed and quoted separately. If you have not bought the pole yet, tell us the measurements when booking and we will talk through what fits before you order.
What to prepare
Clear the window sill and the wall above it, move furniture back from the working area, and leave room for safe access — we bring our own equipment. If there is an existing pole or blinds coming down, say so, since removal and making good the old holes is part of the visit and needs allowing for.
Aftercare
Draw the curtains fully a few times in the first week; anything snagging will show quickly and is usually a small bracket adjustment. Check the bracket screws after a month with heavy curtains. Keep the pole's finish dry — condensation on a bedroom window can mark some finishes over time.
Booking
Tell us the window's width and rough height, the pole type you have or plan, the wall above the window if you know it, and when you would like the visit; same-day may be available. A booking fee is paid on booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how much notice you give, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A curtain pole hung too close to the window frame makes a room feel smaller, and one set even slightly off level shows every morning in the way the curtains hang. Fitting a pole is straightforward once you know where the lintel is and what the wall above the window is made of — which is exactly the part worth getting checked.

Questions people ask about curtain pole installation
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is a curtain pole a DIY job?
Often, yes, if the wall above the window is straightforward and you have a proper drill and a level. The parts people come unstuck on are the lintel — the hard material directly above many windows that defeats ordinary drill bits — plasterboard, and getting the pole level over more than a metre. If you are unsure what is above the window, that is the first thing we establish.
What do you check before fitting?
We agree the pole's position — height above the frame and width beyond the opening — before marking, then assess what the wall above the window is made of and where solid fixing points sit relative to the lintel. Drill positions are planned around the usual cable and pipe routes near windows. You approve everything before the drill comes out.
Can you fit a pole where there is a lintel?
Usually, yes — the trick is knowing where the lintel spans and fixing into the solid masonry either side of it, or through it with the right bits and fixings where necessary. What we will not do is make a series of trial holes hoping to find something solid. If the assessment says the position is awkward, we talk through the options before drilling.
How high above the window should the pole go?
As a working rule, ten to fifteen centimetres above the top of the window frame, with the pole extending around fifteen to twenty centimetres beyond the opening each side, so open curtains stack on the wall rather than the glass. Higher poles make windows read taller. We hold the pole up in position so you can see the effect before fixing.
How does pricing work?
A booking fee is paid on booking, and the hourly labour rate depends on how much notice you give. The full cost is quoted before work starts and approved by you. Any fixings or brackets needed beyond the pole's own hardware are identified and quoted separately as materials.
