Why flat pack goes wrong

Flat pack furniture is engineered to tight tolerances: cam locks that must be seated exactly, dowels that hold alignment, back panels that square the whole carcass. Rushed assembly — the sort that happens at 9pm with a folded Allen key and good intentions — is where problems start. Panels get overtightened and split, dowels are left out because a hole "didn't seem to need one", and back panels are nailed on while the unit sits out of square. The result is a piece that looks finished but wobbles, doors that will not hang level, and fixings that work loose within weeks. Done properly from the start, the same furniture is genuinely sturdy and lasts for years.

How we approach the build

We start by unpacking everything onto a protected floor area and checking the contents against the manufacturer's parts list before a single panel is joined. Hardware is sorted so the right screw goes in the right hole, and any missing or damaged parts are identified immediately rather than discovered halfway through. The furniture is then built following the instructions step by step: carcass first, back panel squared, then doors, drawers and hardware fitted and adjusted. We use our own tools — proper drivers, drills with torque control and levels — rather than the hex key in the box, which makes the work quicker and the joints tighter.

Checking the finished piece

Before we call a job done, we test it the way you will. Doors are opened, closed and aligned, drawers run smoothly without catching, and the whole unit is checked for rock or twist, with adjustable feet levelled where fitted. For anything tall or heavy — wardrobes, bookcases, drawer chests — we discuss fixing it to the wall. Whether that is appropriate depends on the wall's construction and the furniture, so we assess it on site, agree the approach with you and use anchors suited to the substrate. We would rather explain why a wall is not suitable than pretend a fixing will hold.

What to prepare before we arrive

Keep the boxes where you want the furniture built, or nearby — carrying a packed wardrobe carton up three flights of stairs is often harder than carrying the assembled unit, so tell us if access is tight. Clear the work area and the route from door to room, and have the instructions to hand; if the kit came without them, we can usually work from the maker's online version. If parts are missing or arrived damaged, mention it when you book. We will assess what can reasonably be worked around and whether replacement parts from the manufacturer are needed, which you would order separately.

Choices you can make along the way

Flat pack assembly involves small decisions that are far easier to make with the piece standing than to undo afterwards. Which way doors hang, whether a drawer unit sits left or right, where shelves land in their pin holes, and how deep the piece sits from the wall are all worth a moment's thought — we will ask before we fix anything permanent, and we are happy to advise on what usually works in a room like yours. Where a kit allows left- or right-handed configuration, deciding early avoids a dismantling job later. If you already know what you want, tell us when we arrive and we will build to that.

When to call us

Book us if you would rather spend your weekend on anything other than diagrams, if the piece is too heavy or awkward to build alone, or if a previous attempt has stalled halfway. Same-day visits may be available when you need furniture built quickly — a tenant moving in, or a room that needs to work tonight. We cover the West Midlands, we are fully insured, and we agree the full cost with you before any work starts. Call Maintenance Men, tell us what needs building, and we will handle the rest.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

That new wardrobe or desk should be a quick win — until the diagrams make no sense and the cam locks refuse to line up. Flat pack assembly is fiddly, time-consuming work where one overtightened fixing can split a panel. Our handymen build flat pack furniture the way the maker intends: parts sorted, fixings correct, panels square and joints tight, so the piece lasts rather than leans.

Questions people ask about flat pack furniture assembly

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could I assemble flat pack furniture myself?

You can, and many people do — but it is slower than it looks and easy to get wrong. Panels split when fixings are overtightened, and an out-of-square carcass causes door and drawer problems later. If you enjoy the work, take your time and follow the instructions exactly; if you would rather not, that is what we are for.

What do you check before building anything?

We unpack everything and check it against the manufacturer's parts list, so missing or damaged parts are caught before assembly starts. We also look at the room: floor space to build in, the finished position, and the wall construction if the piece may need restraining. Nothing is joined until we know the kit is complete and the plan is workable.

Will you fix my wardrobe or bookcase to the wall?

Where a unit is tall or heavy, we recommend securing it, and we assess whether your wall can take a suitable fixing — masonry, plasterboard and studded walls behave very differently. If the wall is not suitable, or fixing is not agreed, we tell you honestly rather than fit something that will not hold. Tall furniture should never be left standing unrestrained where it can tip.

What happens if parts are missing from the box?

We identify missing or damaged parts at the start and assess what can reasonably be done without them. Often the manufacturer supplies replacements quickly, and we can complete the build once they arrive or leave the piece safely part-built in the meantime. We will not improvise with the wrong fixings, because that is how panels split.

How much does flat pack assembly cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the labour is charged hourly — the rate depends on how soon you need the visit. Before any work starts we quote the full cost for your approval, so there are no surprises. If replacement parts turn out to be needed, we identify them and they are quoted separately.
