When a socket fault is hidden
A socket that cuts out, works intermittently or causes a breaker to trip may have a fault that cannot be seen from the room. Cables run through walls, floors and ceilings, and connections may be located at other accessories or accessible junctions. A loose terminal at a neighbouring socket can interrupt power to an outlet further along the circuit. A nail or screw driven into a cable, movement in a building or heat damage can also affect wiring concealed from view.
The visible symptom does not always mark the fault location. The socket may be the first obvious sign even if the problem is upstream. Swapping the faceplate without testing can leave the cause untouched. If the outlet is hot, crackling, sparking or smells of burning, stop using it and switch off the circuit if safe. Do not probe behind the wall or remove accessories to search for a loose cable.
How wiring faults develop
Fixed wiring can be damaged during building work, drilling, decorating or fitting shelves, especially when the cable route is unknown. A screw or nail may pierce insulation without immediately causing a complete loss of power. Over time, movement or heating at a poor joint can make the connection deteriorate. Older or previously altered wiring can also contain connections that are difficult to locate without tracing the circuit.
A cable fault may affect one socket, a group of outlets or a larger part of the circuit. Breakers and RCDs may trip, but some faults cause intermittent operation rather than an immediate trip. Keep a record of what changes the symptom, such as whether other sockets stop working or whether the issue began after drilling. Do not recreate the fault by moving plugs, resetting a breaker repeatedly or opening the wall yourself.
Testing before opening walls
The electrician asks about the history of the fault, the affected rooms, recent work and which protective device has operated. They identify the circuit and inspect the socket and other relevant accessories for visible clues. After safe isolation, electrical testing helps establish whether the problem is a broken conductor, poor connection, damage to insulation or another issue.
Where readings point to a concealed section, the electrician considers the building layout and likely cable route. Suitable tracing methods and access through existing points can sometimes reduce unnecessary disturbance, but not every fault can be pinpointed without opening a surface. We explain the evidence and agree the next step before making an access opening. If a fault follows recent building work, tell us where and when it took place; this can help focus the investigation.
Repair options and access
If a loose connection is found at an accessible accessory, it may be possible to repair it without opening the wall. A damaged cable may need a replacement section routed through an accessible floor or ceiling void, or a new route along or within the wall. In some cases, the wall must be chased or opened to reach the fault. The electrician will discuss the route, the likely disruption and any making-good before the repair starts. Plastering and decoration are not automatically included unless agreed.
A hidden joint should not be buried again without an appropriate repair method and accessible arrangement. The electrician will explain how the cable will be repaired and what access is needed. If the fault shows that more of the circuit is in poor condition, we will outline the wider findings and discuss whether further work is advisable. We do not claim a particular scheme or compliance status; the recommendation is based on the tests and the condition found.
Testing after repair
After the wiring is repaired, the electrician carries out suitable tests on the affected circuit and socket. This helps confirm continuity, insulation and correct operation as appropriate to the work. If an RCD or breaker tripped during the fault, it should be reset only after the cause has been addressed and the circuit checked. The electrician will explain any part of the circuit that remains outside the agreed repair or needs a separate visit.
If the fault began after drilling, keep the affected circuit off if it trips or there are warning signs. Do not continue work in the same area until the cable route has been established. For future wall fixings, use available wiring information and suitable detection equipment, while remembering that detectors cannot identify every cable in every wall.
When to call us
Arrange an inspection if a socket works intermittently, trips a circuit or remains dead after obvious appliance checks. Heat, burning smells, sparks or exposed conductors need urgent attention. If safe, switch off the relevant circuit and tell us about recent drilling or building work. Same-day and emergency slots may be available, depending on demand.
Book a hidden wiring fault visit
We will trace the fault as far as the test results allow, discuss any access needed and quote the repair before starting. You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted for your approval before tools come out. Contact Maintenance Men to arrange a socket circuit investigation in the West Midlands.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A socket can fail even when the faceplate looks normal, because a loose joint or damaged cable may be hidden behind a wall or elsewhere on the circuit. We test the affected wiring methodically, explain what the results indicate and only open up surfaces when the likely fault location is clearer.
What our customers say about our electrical service

Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights
Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about hidden wiring socket fault
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I open the wall to find a hidden cable fault?
Do not cut or drill into a wall to search for wiring. A cable may remain live and the fault can be some distance from the socket; an electrician can test and narrow the likely location before access is considered.
How does the electrician trace a hidden socket fault?
They inspect the affected outlet and circuit, isolate it safely and use electrical tests to narrow down the fault. The building layout and recent work help decide whether access through an accessory, void or wall is needed.
Is an intermittent socket dangerous?
It can indicate a loose or damaged connection that may heat or worsen. Stop using it if it crackles, becomes warm, sparks or smells of burning, and switch off the circuit if safe.
Will the electrician need to chase the wall?
Not always. Testing may locate a fault at an accessible connection, but a damaged concealed cable can require access through a wall, floor or ceiling. We explain the evidence, route and making-good before that work proceeds.
How is the cost worked out?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
