Seeing sparks crackle from a light fitting is genuinely alarming, and your instinct to take it seriously is correct. Sparking means electricity is jumping across a gap it shouldn't be crossing — at a connection, a switch contact or a damaged part of the fitting. That arc is hot, and every spark event is doing damage. This page tells you what to do in the next two minutes, and what we'll do once you call.
What to Do in the Next Two Minutes
If it is safe to reach your consumer unit without touching the sparking fitting or anything wet, switch off the lighting circuit there — or the RCD covering it if you're not sure which breaker is which. That removes the energy feeding the arc and, in most cases, the sparking stops immediately.
Do not touch the fitting itself, do not try to tighten the bulb while it's sparking, and don't switch the light back on "just to check" whether it does it again — you already know the answer. If you can smell burning, see smoke or feel heat from the ceiling, switch the power off at the main switch as well and keep everyone clear of the room. If flames appear, that's a fire service call, not an electrician call — leave it to the professionals.
Why Fittings Spark
Sparks usually come from one of three places. A loose connection is the most common: a conductor that has backed off its terminal leaves a tiny gap, and electricity arcs across it every time the light runs. Arcing burns the conductor back, the gap grows, and the sparking gets worse each time. The second cause is a failing component inside the fitting — a cracked switch, a lamp holder whose contacts have broken down. The third is moisture, which is why bathroom and outdoor fittings spark far more readily than dry hallway ones.
Occasionally the cause sits upstream: a damaged cable feeding the fitting, or a fault at the ceiling rose. Wherever it is, the mechanism is the same and the response is the same — the circuit comes off until it's fixed.
What We Do When We Arrive
The engineer starts by confirming the circuit is dead and making the fitting safe to handle. Then we open it up and read the evidence. Arcing leaves unmistakable marks — pitted terminals, blackened conductors, brittle insulation — and those marks tell us where the fault began. We test the circuit feeding the fitting to check whether the damage spread, because a connection that arced hard can degrade insulation in the cable back to the previous junction.
The repair depends on what we find. Often it's a remade connection with the burnt-back conductor trimmed to sound metal, plus a check of every other terminal in that fitting and rose. If the fitting itself is damaged internally — and fittings that have sparked often are — we'll recommend replacement rather than trying to revive burnt components, and we can fit a new one at the same visit.
After the Repair
We don't call a sparking fitting fixed just because the sparks stopped. We re-test the circuit under load, confirm the protection at your consumer unit behaves correctly, and show you what caused the fault so you know what to watch for. If we found anything else in the circuit that looked aged or marginal, we'll point it out honestly and let you decide whether to deal with it now or keep an eye on it.
The Cost of the Visit
You pay a booking fee when you book, then labour hourly at a rate that reflects how urgently you need us — urgent slots are available. Once the engineer has established the fault and what the repair involves, you get the full price and approve it before any work proceeds. No surprises, ever.
When to Call Us
Call us immediately if a fitting has sparked at any point, if you hear crackling or buzzing from a light, if you smell burning near a fitting, or if the light switches itself on and off erratically. These are all versions of the same underlying fault, and all of them are same-day jobs.

Sparks from a light fitting are not a quirk to keep an eye on — they're an active electrical fault. The good news is that the immediate steps are simple, and we can get an engineer to you quickly. Switch off, keep hands off the fitting, and let us find out what arced and make it safe again.

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about light fitting sparking
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
What should I do about cost while it's urgent?
The structure is the same as any visit: a booking fee to secure the appointment, then hourly labour at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The engineer quotes the full repair price once they've diagnosed the fault, and you approve it before work starts — urgency changes the rate, not your right to see the price first.
Can I fix a sparking fitting myself?
No — and the one useful thing you can do is switch the lighting circuit off at the consumer unit, if you can do that without touching the fitting. A fitting that has sparked has live arcing damage inside it, and the terminals are live even with the wall switch off. This is firmly a job for a qualified electrician.
How urgent is urgent?
Treat sparking as a same-day emergency. An arcing connection is generating heat every time the circuit is energised, and the damage compounds with each event. Until we arrive, keep the circuit switched off at the consumer unit. That makes the situation stable and safe to wait in.
Will the whole light need replacing?
Not always. If the fault was a loose connection at the rose or a conductor that backed off, remaking the connection properly often restores the fitting to good order. But if the arcing happened inside the fitting and burnt its components — holders, switch, wiring — replacement is the honest answer, because burnt parts fail again, and next time you might not be looking when they do.
Should I use the light again once the sparks stop?
Only after it's been checked and repaired. Sparks stopping can mean the conductor has burnt back so far that the gap is too large to arc — which sounds like a fix but leaves a badly degraded connection sitting in your ceiling waiting for a slightly different failure. The circuit stays off until an engineer has been.
