When water appears at the back of the washing machine, the hose connections are the first place to look, and for good reason – they are the joints in the system, and joints are where water escapes. The inlet hose side is under full mains pressure whenever the tap is open, so a weeping connection there leaks even when the machine is switched off. The good news is that most hose connection leaks are straightforward to resolve when they are diagnosed properly.

Why hose connections leak

Each connection point has its own habits. The inlet hose joints to the wall tap and to the machine's valve rely on rubber washers that harden and flatten with age, and on nuts that work loose through machine vibration. Hoses themselves split or kink, especially where a machine has been pushed back against them. The drain hose connection to the standpipe or under-sink spigot is held by a clip that can loosen, and its outlet can leak where the hose end has degraded. New machines are sometimes fitted with hoses whose seals were never fully seated, and a leak from day one is not unknown. Finally, overtightening by hand or with tools can crack plastic fittings, creating a leak where none existed.

What we do on the visit

We start by isolating: the machine's power off and the water supply valve turned off before anything is touched. With the area dried, we inspect each connection under good light – the inlet hose at both ends, the hose body for bulges and splits, and the drain hose and its clip. Washers are replaced where worn, connections are remade correctly rather than merely cranked tighter, and damaged hoses are identified for replacement. We then restore the water and test under pressure and through a drain cycle, watching the joints while they work. A connection that holds when static but weeps when the pump runs is exactly the kind of thing this testing catches.

Parts and honest limits

Rubber washers and hose clips are inexpensive fixes, and replacement inlet hoses are widely available, including flood-prevention types for machines where the hose sits where a burst would cause damage. Drain hoses are similarly replaceable on most models. What we will not do is disguise a bigger problem: if the machine's inlet valve itself is leaking, or an internal hose is the true source, we will tell you and quote that separately. If a machine has been plumbed in with non-standard or damaged household fittings, we will explain what we found and what falls outside a simple hose fix.

Safety and what to avoid

Never undo or tighten inlet connections with the water supply open – the joint is under mains pressure and will soak you instantly. Do not run inlet hoses under carpets or behind fixed units where a leak would go unnoticed, and avoid pushing the machine fully back against the wall if it crimps a hose. If you notice the leak is getting worse, turn off the tap serving the machine and leave it off until the visit. Water that has spread towards sockets or other appliances should be reported to us when booking so we can prioritise safety checks.

Booking the repair

Call Maintenance Men or use the website form, and tell us which connection you believe is leaking, whether the leak occurs while the machine is idle or only during cycles, and the machine's brand and model. The booking fee is paid when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before any work begins. If water is spreading rapidly, ask about our emergency leak service instead of a routine slot.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A leak at the back of the machine where the hoses meet the taps or the appliance is common and usually fixable quickly. But hose leaks happen under mains water pressure, so they deserve prompt attention. We find the leaking connection, put it right properly, and leave you with a dry floor.

Questions people ask about hose connection leak

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I tighten a leaking hose connection myself?

You can hand-tighten a slightly loose inlet nut with the water supply turned off first. Do not use tools or force, as plastic fittings crack easily. If the leak continues after gentle tightening, or the hose shows bulges or splits, stop and book us rather than winding it tighter.

What gets inspected during the visit?

We isolate power and water, then check the inlet hose at both ends, its washers, the hose body, and the drain hose and clip. We remake connections properly, test under real pressure and through a drain cycle, and quote any replacement parts before fitting them.

Is a leaking inlet hose urgent?

Treat it as urgent. The inlet side sits under mains pressure whenever the tap is open, so a small weep can become a burst with no warning. Turn off the tap serving the machine and leave it off until we have visited. Slow leaks under a sink or behind a unit also cause hidden damage over time.

Will the repair need parts, or just adjustment?

Often just a washer or clip, sometimes nothing more than a correctly remade connection. If the hose itself is damaged, replacement hoses are usually easy to source, though we confirm for your model. If the leak turns out to be from the inlet valve or an internal hose, we will diagnose and quote that separately.

How is this visit charged?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, so more notice usually means a lower rate. We quote the full cost before starting work and you approve it. Parts such as hoses or washers are quoted separately and are not included in the labour figure.
