Is the compressor really at fault?
The compressor sits at the back or bottom of the fridge, pumping refrigerant through the sealed system. When it fails to start, the fridge runs warm and silent — but the cause is not always the compressor itself. A failed start relay or capacitor, a burnt connection in the supply, or a faulty control board can all prevent a healthy compressor from starting.
Genuine compressor failure shows differently: the motor runs but the fridge never cools, the compressor runs hot and short-cycles, or it locks up entirely. Distinguishing these needs proper testing, because the difference is usually a modest relay replacement versus a sealed-system job.
What we test on the visit
The engineer checks the supply to the compressor, tests the start relay and overload, and listens for the characteristic patterns — clicking repeatedly, humming then cutting out, or running continuously without cooling. We check the condenser coils and ventilation too, because an overheating compressor that runs non-stop can be an airflow problem rather than a dying motor. Ventilation problems mimic a dying compressor more often than people expect, which is another reason the test order matters.
Where testing confirms the compressor itself has failed, the fault sits within the sealed refrigerant system. We do not carry out sealed-system work, including compressor replacement and any refrigerant recharge, so we will say so plainly and help you understand the specialist repair or replacement options rather than attempting something beyond our scope.
The repair-versus-replacement conversation
If the fault is the start relay, overload or supply connection, the repair is usually affordable and we quote it on the spot. Genuine compressor or sealed-system failure on an older fridge is different: specialist compressor replacement plus refrigerant handling can approach or exceed the price of a new appliance. We will set out the arithmetic with your model in front of us — its age, the repair estimate a specialist would quote, and what a sensible replacement costs — so you can decide with real numbers instead of guesswork.
We will never talk you into a repair we would not choose for our own kitchen. If a specialist repair is the right route, we will say what it involves and why, so you can compare it fairly against a new appliance.
Keeping food safe meanwhile
A fridge with a failing compressor drifts warm quickly. Keep the doors closed, move perishables to a working fridge, cool box with ice packs, or a neighbour's appliance, and judge individual items by the storage guidance on their packaging. Anything high-risk that has clearly warmed, such as raw meat or seafood, is safer discarded.
Safety notes
Never open the compressor housing or the sealed pipework yourself. Compressors and their capacitors hold electrical charge and the sealed system holds pressurised refrigerant — both are strictly engineer territory. If the compressor area smells hot or burnt, or the fridge trips the electrics, switch it off at the socket and mention it when booking.
Booking your visit
Call or use our contact form with the brand and model number, the appliance's approximate age, and what it is doing — silent, clicking, running constantly, or running but warm. Whether cooling has failed completely or is just declining helps us prepare. If you can, note whether the noise happens when the room is warm, since heat stress changes how compressors behave. A booking fee is paid when booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost of any work is quoted and approved before it starts. Where sealed-system work is needed, we will explain the referral and your options clearly.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
The compressor is the heart of a fridge, and suspected compressor failure is the diagnosis nobody wants. It is also often misdiagnosed — many dead compressors are actually failed start relays or electrical faults that cost far less to fix. Our visit tells you which situation you are in, with an honest comparison of repair against replacement before you spend anything.
What our customers say about our home appliances service
4.8 out of 5 from 14 reviews
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 27 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle
Good job, slightly late
Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.
Job: Toaster Not Working
No mess left behind
Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about compressor failure
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
My fridge clicks every few minutes — is the compressor dead?
Repeated clicking usually means the start relay is trying and failing to start the compressor, which is often a repairable electrical fault rather than a dead compressor. Testing on the visit confirms which it is.
Can you replace a failed compressor?
No. Compressor replacement and any sealed-system refrigerant work are specialist jobs we do not carry out. If testing confirms that fault, we explain the specialist repair and replacement options plainly.
How do I know if it is worth repairing at all?
It comes down to the diagnosis and the appliance's age. A start relay fault is usually worth fixing; a failed compressor on an older fridge often makes replacement the better spend. We give you both figures honestly.
What should I do with the food while deciding?
Move perishables to a working fridge or cool box with ice packs and judge items by the storage guidance on their packaging. Anything high-risk that has clearly warmed is safer thrown away.
How much does this diagnosis cost?
A booking fee is paid when you book, and labour is at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before any work starts; parts and any specialist referral costs are quoted separately.
