Dishwashers have two hose connections that matter: the fill hose bringing water in, and the drain hose taking it out. Both are joints, both are under the machine or behind it, and both can leak in ways that are invisible until the cabinet floor softens or water appears at the front.
Clean water or dirty water
The first useful distinction is what is leaking. Clean water under pressure points at the fill side: the union at the appliance, the washer inside it, the hose itself, or the isolating valve. Dirty or soapy water points at the drain side: a loose clip at the pump outlet, a split in the corrugated hose, or a poor connection at the sink spigot.
If the leak only appears while the machine is filling, it is almost certainly the fill side. If it appears during the drain phase or just after, it is the drain side.
The fill connection
The fill hose attaches to an inlet valve at the back or side of the machine, usually with a threaded union and a rubber or fibre washer. Failure modes:
- a hardened or missing washer
- a union not fully tightened after previous work
- a split in the hose where it bends behind the machine
- a damaged thread on the valve body from cross-threading
- the isolating valve itself weeping at the packing
The washer is the usual culprit and costs almost nothing. A split hose or a damaged valve body is a replacement.
The drain connection
The drain hose pushes onto a spigot at the pump and is held by a spring clip, then runs up to the sink waste or a standpipe. Leaks here come from a clip that has rusted or sprung, a hose that has hardened and no longer grips, a split at the spigot end, or a connection pushed too far down a standpipe causing a syphon.
The syphon case is worth knowing: if the drain hose is pushed deep into a standpipe with no air break, the machine can syphon water out during a cycle and appear to leak from nowhere obvious. We check the hose height and the air gap.
Access is the real variable
Some machines can have both connections reached by removing the plinth or pulling the machine forward. Others are boxed in by fitted units with no service gap, and the machine has to come out, which means disconnecting everything and lifting it clear of the flooring. We will tell you which situation you have before starting, because it changes the time involved.
What we do not do
We work on the appliance's own hoses and their connections to existing services. We do not run new pipework, alter the sink waste arrangement beyond refitting the spigot, or fit new taps. If the isolating valve is seized or the waste pipe needs changing, that is plumbing and we will say so rather than improvising a joint.
Isolation
Water is off at the appliance valve and power off at the socket before any connection is disturbed, both safely accessible. If the valve will not shut off fully, we isolate at the mains stopcock. If the leak has reached the plug or socket, the machine stays off and we will not run it to test.
Aftercare
After resealing or replacing, we run the machine through a fill and a drain while watching the joint, then check again with a dry tissue, which shows a weep that a glance will miss. Look under the sink and at the cabinet base a day later. A fibre washer will sometimes seep for a few hours before it takes up, so a second check is worthwhile.
Booking
Tell us whether the water is clean or soapy, when it appears in the cycle, and whether the machine is boxed in. Those three answers get us to the right part quickly. Book online, pay the booking fee at the time of booking, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A leak at a hose connection is often the cheapest dishwasher fault to put right and one of the most disruptive if ignored, because a weeping joint under pressure can put a surprising amount of water into a kitchen cabinet over a few weeks. The tricky part is access, not the repair itself.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle
Good job, slightly late
Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.
Job: Toaster Not Working
No mess left behind
Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about hose connection leak
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I just tighten the connection myself?
If the union is accessible and you can reach it without pulling the machine through fitted units, a gentle nip-up is reasonable. Do not over-tighten, which crushes the washer, and do not attempt it with the water on.
How do I know if it is the fill or drain side?
Timing tells you. A leak while filling is supply-side; a leak during or after the drain phase is drain-side. Clean water versus soapy water points the same way.
The hose is pushed into a standpipe and it keeps syphoning. Is that a leak?
It can look like one. Without an air break, the machine can pull water out of the standpipe during a cycle. We check the hose height and the air gap as part of the diagnosis.
Will you need to pull the machine out?
Possibly. If there is no service gap in the fitted units, the machine has to come out to reach the connections. We will tell you before starting, as it affects how long the job takes.
What will it cost?
The booking fee is paid when you book. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost before starting and you approve it, with washers, hoses or clips identified and quoted separately.
