The door lock on a dishwasher does two jobs. It holds the door closed against the pressure of the wash, and it tells the control board that the door is secure so the cycle can start. When the second job fails, the machine behaves as though the door is open even when it is latched.
How the fault presents
- the machine beeps or flashes as if the door is open
- pressing start has no effect
- the cycle starts and stops after a few seconds
- the door needs to be slammed rather than closed
- an error code relating to the door appears immediately
On some models the lock also has a delay: the door stays locked for a period after the cycle ends while the load cools. A lock that never releases is the same component failing the other way, and it can trap the door shut.
Mechanical or electrical
The interlock has a mechanical part, the latch and its engagement, and an electrical part, the microswitch or Hall sensor that reports the latch position. Both have to work.
Mechanical failures: a worn latch hook, a strike plate that has shifted, a broken plastic lever, a door that has dropped so the latch misses the strike. Electrical failures: a microswitch that no longer closes, a broken wire at the door hinge where the harness flexes, or a board input that has failed.
A useful clue is whether the latch clicks. A distinct click with no response suggests the mechanical side is engaging and the switch is not reporting. No click at all suggests the latch is not reaching the strike.
Testing
With the power isolated we check the switch for continuity in both door positions, inspect the harness at the hinge for chafing, and confirm the latch engages the strike fully. Where the switch is part of a lock assembly, we test the assembly as a unit. We do not bypass an interlock to "prove" the machine works, because that removes a safety device and risks a wash starting with the door unsecured.
The hinge harness
The wiring to the door runs through the hinge area and flexes every time the door opens. Over time, that flexing breaks strands inside the insulation where it cannot be seen. This produces an intermittent fault that appears and disappears, often worse in cold weather or after the door has been opened wide. It is a common cause of a lock fault that nobody can reproduce on demand, and it is worth telling us if yours is intermittent.
Parts and cost
Lock assemblies, latches and strike plates are model-specific. Some are quick to obtain, some are not. We quote against your model number after identification, and if a part needs ordering we will say so rather than implying a one-visit fix. A harness repair is sometimes possible rather than a full harness replacement, which affects the price.
Safety
The interlock exists so the machine cannot run with the door open and spray hot water. We will not disable it, bridge it, or advise you to. Power is isolated before any work on the lock or the door harness, and only where the socket or isolation point is safely reachable. If the machine is stuck locked with a wet load inside, do not force the door; tell us when booking and we will advise.
Aftercare
After replacement we close and open the door repeatedly, confirm the click and the board's response, then run a cycle. If the lock has a delay release, confirm it releases normally at the end of the cycle. Check that the door still closes with normal effort, since a new lock can feel tighter for the first few uses.
Booking
Tell us whether the latch clicks, whether the fault is constant or intermittent, and whether the door has ever been forced or leant on. Book online, with the booking fee paid at the time of booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A door that is physically shut but not registered as shut is a frustrating fault, because the machine looks ready and refuses to run. The interlock is a safety device, so it fails safe: no confirmed close, no cycle. Testing it properly separates a mechanical latch problem from an electrical one.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle
Good job, slightly late
Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.
Job: Toaster Not Working
No mess left behind
Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about door lock fault
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I just bypass the door switch to test it?
No, and we would not advise it. The interlock is a safety device that stops a cycle running with the door unsecured. Bypassing it risks a wash starting with the door open.
The fault comes and goes. Is that significant?
Yes, it often points at the wiring harness at the hinge, which flexes with every door movement and can break internally. Tell us if it is intermittent, as it changes where we look first.
The door is stuck shut. Should I force it?
Do not force it. Some locks hold the door for a cooling period, and a jammed lock can be damaged by leverage. Switch off at the socket and tell us when booking so we can plan for it.
What will you test?
The switch for continuity in both door positions, the latch engagement with the strike, and the harness at the hinge for chafing or broken strands. We also confirm the board is reading the switch correctly.
What does the visit cost?
The booking fee is taken when you book. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, and the lock assembly or harness is identified and quoted separately.
