Damp on walls driven by external water is a cause-and-effect problem. The wall is showing the symptom; the water — from outside, at or below ground level — is the cause. Repainting or re-plastering without dealing with the water is a cycle we see constantly, so our job is to find and fix the water side.

How external water drives damp

The usual mechanisms: ground levels that have risen above the damp course, letting water bridge straight into the wall; downpipes and gullies discharging or backing up at the wall base; paved surfaces and drives sloping water towards the building; saturated ground holding moisture against the wall for weeks after rain, particularly in clay soil; and cracked or leaking drainage runs discharging into the ground beside the wall. Occasionally water arrives from beyond the property — a highway gully backing up or neighbouring higher ground — and in rarer cases the damp is not external at all but a plumbing leak or rising damp, which is why diagnosis comes first.

How we assess it

We look at where the damp shows, how high it rises and when it worsens — patterns that follow rain point to external water; patterns that do not point elsewhere. We check external ground levels against the damp course, inspect gullies, downpipe outlets and any drainage runs beside the wall, examine how paved areas fall, and test how the ground around the house behaves with trial holes where needed. Before any digging we check carefully for buried services; detectors help, but no scan guarantees what is below, and utility plans are yours to provide. If the evidence suggests an internal cause or a building-fabric issue beyond drainage — rendered walls, pointing, cavity problems — we will say so and point you to the right specialist rather than oversell drainage as the answer.

Fixing the water

Ground levels are lowered or re-graded where they sit against or above the damp course, keeping a clear zone. Downpipes are connected into proper drainage so roof water leaves the wall base instead of dumping there. Gullies and runs are cleared, repaired or replaced where blocked or leaking. Paved areas are re-falled or given a channel at their low edge. Where the ground around the house stays saturated, land drainage carries water away to a working outfall. Where water arrives from beyond your boundary, we say plainly what work on your plot can and cannot achieve — highway drainage usually sits with the council or water company.

The wall itself

Once the water is cut off, walls dry out over weeks and months — thick walls dry slowly, and that is normal. The wall's own repair, replastering and redecorating belong after the drying, and we will tell you when the time is right rather than rush it. If a damp specialist's assessment is the better next step, we say so.

How the work is quoted

Clearing and small drainage repairs sit within the standard visit. Larger works — re-grading, new drainage runs, land drainage — are quoted projects: surveyed, priced including materials and reinstatement, approved by you before work starts. Weather affects groundworks and we schedule sensibly. No drainage fix guarantees a permanently dry wall in extreme weather, but removing the water that reaches it in ordinary rain is achievable and lasting.

Booking

Book a visit and tell us where the damp shows, how high it reaches, and whether it worsens with rain. Photos of the wall and the ground beside it help. Keep the external area clear for assessment, and mention any recent work near the house — patios, drives, drainage — as new works are frequent culprits.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

When damp shows on walls and the cause is outside — water sitting against or soaking into the wall — treating the wall alone never works for long. We look at how water is reaching the wall: ground levels, drainage, downpipes, paved surfaces and how the ground holds water. Then we fix the water problem, because the wall dries out only once the water is gone.

What our customers say about our drainage service

4.2 out of 5 from 5 reviews

Fast, tidy and friendly

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the part had to be sourced locally), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Standing Water in Shower Tray

Happy overall

Good job overall. Turned up about 15 minutes after the window started, but rang to say so, and the work itself was tidy and well explained. Price was as quoted.

Job: Partial Soil Stack Blockage

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Questions people ask about wall damp from external water

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could I deal with wall damp from outside water myself?

You can observe and note when the damp worsens, clear external gully gratings, and check whether ground levels sit high against the wall — that is genuinely useful. Lowering ground levels, re-grading surfaces or connecting downpipes into drainage is not DIY: getting it wrong against a wall is expensive, and buried services make digging risky without proper checks.

What do you check to confirm the damp is from external water?

We look at where and how high the damp shows and whether it worsens with rain, check external ground levels against the damp course, inspect gullies, downpipe outlets and drainage runs beside the wall, and examine how paved areas fall. Trial holes show how the ground holds water. If the pattern points to an internal cause instead, we say so and recommend the right specialist.

Is damp against a wall something to take seriously?

Yes. Persistent water at the wall base can work into plaster, floors and the building fabric over time, and it can also affect the damp course's effectiveness. Treat it as a repair priority rather than a cosmetic nuisance, and deal with the water before any wall repairs — otherwise the damp simply returns through fresh plaster.

Will fixing the drainage cure the damp on my wall?

It removes the water that feeds it, which is the essential half of the cure. Walls then dry over weeks to months — thick walls dry slowly, and that is normal — and replastering or decorating should wait until drying is well under way. If the damp was partly caused by the wall's own fabric or an internal source, we will have said so during assessment rather than promise drainage alone will fix it.

What will this cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of any drainage work is quoted and approved before we start, and parts are quoted separately. Larger projects like re-grading or new drainage runs are surveyed first, so the quote reflects the real design.
