Waste Coming Back Up? We Stop the Backflow and Find the Cause
We check the chamber and the run to see whether the sewer is surcharging or your own pipe is restricted, then clear what we can and tell you who else to call.
Booking fee plus hourly labour — the price is confirmed before any work starts.

Backflow means water is arriving from downstream rather than leaving from your fittings. That is a different problem from a simple blockage, and it is worth staying calm about it: in most cases the cause can be found, and the first hour is mostly about containing water rather than fixing anything.
First, stop adding water
Do not flush the toilet, run the bath, use the washing machine or empty a sink. Every litre you add has to go somewhere, and if the run is surcharging it will come back into the lowest fitting in the property. Put a bucket under any overflowing trap, lay towels at the doorway, and move anything valuable — rugs, electrical items, cardboard boxes — out of the way. Open a window or a door for ventilation.
If water is close to a socket, an appliance or a light fitting, do not touch the electrical item. Turn the circuit off at the consumer unit if you can reach it safely, and keep everyone out of the affected room until it is clear.
Working out where the water is coming from
Backflow into a ground-floor toilet, a bath or a shower tray usually means the downstream run is restricted or the public sewer is surcharged. If it happens only when a neighbour uses water, or only during heavy rain, the sewer itself is the likely cause. If it happens whenever your own appliances discharge, the restriction is probably in your own lateral.
Lifting the nearest chamber tells us a lot. A chamber that is full and rising with nothing running in your house is receiving water from elsewhere. A chamber that fills only when you discharge is holding your own flow back. We check both before suggesting anything.
What we can do at the visit
If the restriction is in your lateral, we clear it by rodding or jetting from the chamber, and we test the flow afterwards. If the run is surcharged from the public sewer, there is a limit to what any contractor can do: clearing your own pipe will not help while the sewer is full. In that case the water company needs to attend, and we will tell you so rather than charging you to watch water rise.
Where backflow is a recurring problem on a run that is otherwise sound, a backflow prevention device — a non-return valve or a barrier — can be discussed. That is a considered piece of work, not an emergency fix, and it is quoted after we have seen the layout and the levels.
Hygiene after a backflow event
What comes back up is sewage, even when it looks dilute. Keep children and pets out, wear gloves if you are cleaning, wash your hands thoroughly afterwards, and ventilate the space. Clean hard surfaces with hot water and detergent rather than just wiping them dry, and wash any clothing or soft furnishing that has been contaminated. Do not use a domestic pressure washer to spread the water around a garden.
Do not pour caustic drain products into a fitting that is backing up. They will not clear a surcharged sewer, they will sit in standing water, and they are dangerous to anyone working on the drain afterwards.
If it is an emergency
Water rising towards living space, sewage entering a room you cannot leave dry, or a backflow affecting a vulnerable person is worth calling the water company as well as us — they have powers and equipment for the public sewer that no independent contractor has. If there is a risk to health or safety, treat that first and book the drain work once the immediate situation is contained.
Preventing a repeat
Once the cause is known, the useful measures depend on it: keeping fats, wipes and food waste out of the drain, clearing a shared run regularly if it is prone to silting, or addressing a root intrusion that keeps reopening a joint. If the same fitting backs up every winter, that pattern is worth investigating rather than clearing each time.
To book, tell us the postcode, which fitting is backing up, whether it happens when neighbours use water, and whether anything has overflowed into the property. That information decides whether we attend with rods, a jetter or advice to call the water company first.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Water rising in a bath or a toilet when you have not used it is a horrible moment, and the instinct is to keep flushing or bail it out. Neither helps for long. The priority is to stop adding water, contain what is there, and find out whether the cause is inside your boundary or further down the sewer.
What our customers say about our drainage service
4.2 out of 5 from 5 reviews
Fast, tidy and friendly
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the part had to be sourced locally), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Standing Water in Shower Tray
Happy overall
Good job overall. Turned up about 15 minutes after the window started, but rang to say so, and the work itself was tidy and well explained. Price was as quoted.
Job: Partial Soil Stack Blockage
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Questions people ask about severe drain backflow
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
What should I do right now?
Stop using water and flushing, contain what is there with towels and a bucket, move valuables clear and ventilate the room. If water is near electrics, keep away and isolate the circuit if you can do so safely.
How do you tell the difference between my drain and the sewer?
We lift the nearest chamber and watch the level. If it rises with nothing running in your property, the water is coming from downstream or from a shared sewer. If it only rises when you discharge, the restriction is in your own lateral and we can usually clear it.
Is backed-up sewage a health hazard?
Yes. Keep children and pets away, wear gloves when cleaning, wash your hands thoroughly and ventilate the space. Clean hard surfaces with hot water and detergent, and do not spread contaminated water around with a pressure washer.
Will a non-return valve stop this happening again?
It can help where the run is otherwise sound and the backflow comes from a shared sewer, but it is not a universal answer and it needs the right levels and access. We will discuss whether it suits your layout rather than fit one as a reflex.
What does it cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, parts quoted separately, so the full cost is approved before any tools come out. If the water company needs to attend the public sewer, there is no charge from us for that work — we will tell you before you commit to anything.
