Installing an intercom properly is a job of small decisions that add up: where the panel goes, how the cable is routed, whether existing wiring can be reused, what happens at the door, and how the system will actually be used day to day. We treat installation as a surveyed, quoted project rather than an improvised visit, because the difference shows every time you use the system.
What a survey establishes
Before quoting we look at the entrance: where the panel can be mounted so it is convenient, weather-protected and reachable, and what the wall is made of — drilling and fixing differ between brick, render and framed construction. We assess the cable route from entrance to the position of your handset or monitor, whether existing intercom wiring can be reused or is best replaced, and where power will come from. For video systems we check the camera's sightline and whether its view is useful. For smart and app-based systems we check the WiFi coverage at the panel position, because a weak signal there produces complaints that look like equipment faults later. In flats and shared buildings, installing or altering an entrance panel is communal work that needs your landlord's or managing agent's permission — we will tell you early what approvals are needed.
What we install
We install audio intercoms, video door entry systems and smart app-based systems, in new positions and as replacements for old equipment. Cabling is run neatly — clipped, concealed or channelled and made good as agreed — with the route and any making good set out in the quote. Panels are sealed properly against weather, mounted securely, and positioned with the camera sightline in mind where video is involved. Handsets and monitors are sited where you will actually use them, and power connections are made safely.
How the project runs
Installation is quoted after the survey: the equipment, the labour, the cable route and any making good are all in the quote, with parts itemised separately. You approve the full cost before work starts. Most home installations are completed in a defined visit on the agreed scope; anything needing several days is staged and agreed that way in advance. We do not promise same-day availability, though it may be possible depending on scheduling.
Handover and aftercare
An installation is not finished until you can use it. We test speech, video and release in both directions, set up user features — volume, chimes, additional handsets where fitted — and walk you through everything: making and answering calls, releasing the door, and any app setup for smart systems. For app-based systems we will also be straight about the caveats: they depend on your WiFi and the manufacturer's cloud services, and we cannot guarantee the availability of either. You keep the documentation, and we tell you what maintenance the system will realistically need.
Honest limits and expectations
We do not guarantee any system against future faults, and consumables such as batteries will need periodic replacement. WiFi and cloud-dependent features depend on networks and third-party services outside our control. If the survey reveals constraints — a difficult cable route, an unsuitable wall, a landlord's restriction — we will say so before quoting rather than after starting.
How to book
Get in touch to arrange a survey, and tell us whether you want audio, video or app-based control, whether an old system is being replaced, and whether your property is a house or a flat in a managed building. The survey leads to a clear quote, and the installation follows only once you have approved it.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A new intercom is a small system with a big daily impact, and getting it right starts before any cable is run. Our installation begins with a survey of your entrance, walls and existing wiring, then a clear quote for the proposed equipment and route. We install neatly, test everything, and hand over a system you actually know how to use.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service
5 out of 5 from 7 reviews
Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about intercom installation
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I install an intercom myself?
Wireless plug-and-play units are often user-installable and the manual will say so. Wired systems involve cabling through walls, mains-derived power and precise terminations — that is engineer work, and a poor DIY install usually costs more to put right than a proper one would have cost.
What does your installation include?
A survey first, then a quote covering equipment, cabling, the route and any making good. Installation covers secure mounting, weather-sealed panels, neat cable runs, safe power connections and full testing of speech, video and door release, with a handover showing you how to use everything.
Do we need permission to install a new panel in our block of flats?
Almost certainly yes — the entrance panel is communal equipment, so landlord or managing agent approval is normally required. Tell us your arrangement when booking and we will help establish what permission is needed before any survey or work.
Will a smart intercom app work reliably?
It depends on your WiFi coverage at the panel and on the manufacturer's app and cloud services, which we cannot guarantee. We check signal strength during the survey and will tell you honestly if the position or your network is likely to cause problems.
How much does an intercom installation cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. After the survey we quote the full cost of the installation before work starts, with equipment and parts itemised separately, and nothing proceeds until you approve it.
