Access control integration is what turns a gate from something you open with a fob into something that responds to how you actually live — a code for the dog walker, a phone for the family, an intercom for visitors, a timed close so nobody has to remember. Getting those systems talking to the gate's controls is straightforward when the equipment is compatible, and the craft lies in making it neat, reliable and tested.

What Integration Actually Involves

At its core, integration connects each access device to the gate control board's inputs: a keypad's relay, an intercom's release signal, a phone app's bridge, a card reader's output, and the board's settings that define what each one may do — open fully, open partially for pedestrians, hold open, or trigger auto-close. Wireless and app-based devices add a network layer, and that layer is where most integration trouble lives: weak WiFi at the gateway, hub pairing, changed router settings and third-party service availability all affect it, and we will be honest about what is and is not in our control.

Compatibility: The First Honest Question

Not every access device works with every gate control board. Some boards accept only certain protocols or signal types; some app platforms depend on cloud services we cannot guarantee; some older systems can be integrated only through a converter or by upgrading the board. The visit starts with a compatibility assessment of what you have — gate operator, control board, and the devices you want to connect — and an honest answer about what will integrate cleanly, what needs an adapter and what is better replaced. We would rather tell you that at the start than sell you a device that half-works.

Shared Buildings and Permissions

If the gate, intercom or access system is shared — a managed development, a landlord's equipment, a boundary shared with a neighbour — permission may be needed before we connect anything, and we will flag that when you book. We never force doors or bypass security to achieve integration, and we do not connect devices in ways that weaken existing protections.

How We Integrate and Test

We connect each device to the correct board input, programme the board so each access route behaves as you want — full opening for cars, partial opening for the pedestrian route, sensible auto-close timings — and then test every route end to end: from the street, from the house, from the phone, at the ranges and in the conditions you will actually use. Signal strength at the gateway is measured rather than assumed, and where WiFi is marginal we will say so and suggest practical fixes such as hub relocation or a mesh node.

Safety Devices Remain Untouched in Purpose

Integration never means weakening safety. Photocells, safety edges and force limits must never be disabled or bypassed to make a device or integration easier — they remain fully active whatever is connected, and we re-test them after any integration work with real obstruction tests. An access system that adds convenience while quietly removing protection is not integration; it is a hazard with an app.

What Integration Cannot Promise

App-based and cloud-dependent access depends on third-party services, your broadband and your router — none of which we can guarantee, and we will tell you plainly what happens when each fails and what fallback you have (typically the physical remote and, in a power cut, the manual release used per the manufacturer's instructions). We do not provide legal advice on camera or recording matters where video intercoms are involved; the customer is responsible for using such devices lawfully and considerately.

Aftercare

Integrated systems benefit from being tested as a whole at service time: every access route, every user device, auto-close timings and the safety devices together. If you add devices later — a new handset, another phone, a replacement router — expect a check that everything still talks to everything, and call us rather than battling it alone.

When to Call Us

Book when you want new access devices connected, when an existing integration behaves unreliably, or when you are planning changes — a new router, a new intercom, a second property user — that will affect the system. Tell us the gate system make and model, the devices involved and how your household wants access to work.

Booking Your Visit

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, and any devices or parts are quoted separately. Same-day visits may be available depending on the schedule.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A gate that answers to a code, a phone and a fob changes how a household moves — and integration only works when every device genuinely talks to the gate's controls. Our visit connects and tests the whole chain, so access works from every route you actually use.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about access control integration

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I connect access devices to my gate myself?

Pairing a remote or adding a user in an app is usually supported by the manufacturer and fine to do. Wiring devices into the control board, programming inputs and integrating intercoms or readers is engineer work — miswired inputs can disable safety functions without anything looking wrong. Never bypass safety devices to make integration easier.

What do you check before integrating a device?

We assess compatibility between your gate control board and the device, confirm the signal types the board accepts, plan the connection and programming, and check network conditions at the gateway for app or wireless devices. Only then do we connect, programme and test every access route end to end.

Will integration weaken my gate's safety features?

Not with us. Photocells, safety edges and force limits stay fully active whatever is connected, and we re-test them with real obstruction tests after integration. Any approach that involves disabling or bypassing safety equipment to make a device work is one we will not take.

My gate app stopped working after I changed router — is that covered?

Very likely, and it is a common integration issue: new router names, passwords, bands or firewall settings can break the link between the app, hub and gate. We diagnose the practical side — band, hub placement, pairing and signal at the gateway — though we cannot guarantee third-party cloud or app service availability.

How much does integration cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start. Any devices, hubs or parts are quoted separately so you can see each element.
