Remote viewing failure is unsettling in a specific way: the system may be recording perfectly well, but the view you actually check — the phone in your pocket — shows nothing. You get error messages, spinning circles, or cameras that appear on the home WiFi but vanish the moment you leave the house. Because remote viewing involves your recorder, your network, your broadband, your phone and a third-party app or service all working together, there are more places for it to break than almost any other CCTV fault.

Why remote viewing stops working

The classic trigger is a change somewhere in the chain. A new router, changed broadband details, a provider swap or an updated network configuration can break the path between your phone and your recorder overnight. On the recorder side, network settings, addresses and connection configurations can be lost after a power cut or firmware update. App-side causes are common too: apps update, accounts get signed out, and the services some systems rely on change their behaviour without warning. Phone updates occasionally contribute. And sometimes the fault is not in the system at all — your broadband may be down, or the third-party service your system depends on may be having problems, which no local fix can address. It is honest to say plainly: remote viewing depends on your broadband provider and services we do not control, so we diagnose and configure everything we can and tell you honestly where a fault lies outside your system.

How we diagnose it

Our engineer separates the chain into testable links. We confirm the system is recording locally, because there is no point chasing remote access onto a recorder that is not working. We check the recorder's network connection and settings, test whether the system is reachable from your network and from outside it, and confirm the app, account and device configuration on your actual phone or tablet. We look at what changed recently — router swaps and provider visits explain a large share of these faults — and reconcile the configuration with the current network. By the end you know which link failed and whether the fix is in your system, your network or beyond either.

Getting you connected and keeping you secure

Fixes range from reconfiguring the recorder's network settings to reconnecting the app on your devices, updating connection details after a router change, or sorting addressing conflicts. We do the reconnection on your own devices with you, so you see exactly how it works and are not dependent on anyone else to check your cameras. We will also flag anything insecure we notice — default passwords are the classic example — because a remotely accessible system deserves better. What we cannot promise is the continued behaviour of third-party apps, cloud services or your broadband provider; we configure everything under our control and prove it working before we leave.

Footage in your pocket, handled responsibly

Remote access makes footage easy to view and easy to share, so responsible use matters. Recordings are personal data and the owner is responsible for handling them lawfully and considerately — cameras should cover your own property rather than unnecessarily filming neighbours' homes or public space, footage should be kept for a sensible period, and clips shared only appropriately, for example with the police if they request them. Keep your app account private and be thoughtful about who else has access. We configure the equipment; legal and account-security questions beyond the equipment are not something we advise on.

Aftercare

After reconnecting, test remote viewing from outside your WiFi within a day or two, since some faults only show off-network. If you replace your router or change broadband provider in future, expect the connection to need reconfiguring and let us know — that prevents weeks of frustration. If the app stops working after an update, note the error message it shows.

When to call us

Book when remote viewing first fails, and tell us what devices you use, what the app shows, whether local viewing on the recorder still works, and whether your network changed recently. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Remote viewing is the part of a CCTV system people use most and notice first when it stops. Cameras that record perfectly can still be invisible on your phone, and the causes range from a network change to an app or service problem. Our engineer diagnoses the whole chain — recorder, network, internet and app — and gets you watching again.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about remote viewing not working

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fix remote viewing myself by reinstalling the app?

Reinstalling the app is harmless and occasionally helps, so there is no harm in trying once. Beyond that, remote viewing faults involve network configuration on the recorder and router that is easy to make worse without diagnostic equipment — especially if factory resets are involved, which we would advise against.

What do you check when remote viewing has stopped?

We confirm the system still records locally, check the recorder's network settings and reachability, test the connection from inside and outside your network, and review the app and account setup on your own devices. That tells us whether the fault is in the system, the network or a third-party service.

Is remote viewing safe, or should I be worried about security?

A properly configured system is the design intent of the equipment, but security depends on sensible settings — default passwords and shared accounts are the usual weak points. We will flag anything obviously insecure we find during the visit, though detailed cybersecurity advice is beyond our scope.

Why does viewing work at home but not when I'm out?

That pattern points to the connection between your system and the outside internet — often a router change, provider switch or network setting that broke the external path. Local viewing working is actually a useful diagnostic fact, and our testing inside and outside your network will pin down where the path broke.

How much does the visit cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts; parts are quoted separately.
