CCTV that stops recording is one of those faults you usually discover at the worst moment, when you go back to look for footage of something that actually happened. The cameras may still show a live picture, the recorder may still have lights on the front, and yet the playback screen is empty or the timeline has stopped days ago. Because nothing looks broken, it is tempting to assume the system is fine and just needs a nudge — but recording failures almost always have a specific, findable cause.

Why a system stops saving footage

There are several common reasons. The hard drive inside the recorder may have failed or been knocked out of its healthy state, so the recorder has nowhere to write footage even though the cameras are still streaming to it. Recording settings can also change: a firmware update, a power cut or someone experimenting with menus can switch recording from continuous to motion-only, reduce the recording quality, or turn cameras off in the schedule. Motion detection settings that are too strict can quietly mean nothing is ever triggered. Cables and connections matter too — a partially failed camera cable can deliver a live view while losing the signal the recorder needs to write good footage. And in older systems, a recorder that is close to the end of its life simply stops writing reliably.

How we diagnose it

Our engineer starts by confirming what is actually happening rather than guessing. We check the recorder's drive status and error logs, which usually tell us quickly whether the problem is storage, settings or signal. We then test recording on each camera individually: we trigger motion in front of each one, watch it appear on the timeline, and play the footage back to confirm it saved properly. If a camera is not writing at all, we test its cable, connection and feed to separate a wiring fault from a recorder fault. We also check that the recording schedule, quality and overwrite settings match how you actually want the system to behave, because a technically working system can still be set up in a way that does not serve you.

Repair options and honest limits

Many faults are fixed in the visit: a recording schedule corrected, a failed connection reseated, a drive reformatted or a recording mode restored. If the hard drive inside the recorder has failed, replacement is usually straightforward and we quote for the part separately before fitting anything. If the recorder itself has failed, we will say so plainly and talk you through replacement options rather than selling you a repair that will not hold. We do not promise a repair before diagnosis, and we do not make claims about how long footage will be retained — retention depends on your drive size, camera count, image quality and how much motion your property sees, and we will explain what your current settings realistically give you.

Using recordings responsibly

Recordings from a home CCTV system are personal data, and the person whose system it is is responsible for handling them lawfully and considerately. In practice that means positioning cameras so they cover your own property rather than unnecessarily covering neighbours' homes or public space, keeping footage for a sensible length of time, and sharing clips only where it is appropriate to do so — for example with the police if they ask in connection with an incident. We fit and configure equipment; we do not provide legal advice, but we will always flag anything about your setup that looks like it reaches beyond your own boundary.

Aftercare and what to check yourself

Once recording is confirmed working, it is worth opening your playback screen occasionally and checking recent footage is actually there — it takes a minute and catches problems early. Many recorders show a drive status or error icon; if that ever changes, do not ignore it. Avoid reformatting the drive or resetting the recorder to factory settings yourself, as that can wipe footage and settings. If you notice recording stopping again, tell us when it started and anything that changed beforehand, such as a power cut or a settings change.

When to call us

Call us as soon as you notice a gap in your timeline or a playback screen that should not be empty. The longer a recording fault runs, the more footage is lost. When you book, tell us the make and model of your recorder if you can, roughly when recording last worked, and whether anything changed around then. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost of any work is quoted and approved before we start — parts, such as a replacement drive, are quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

It is unsettling to discover your cameras have been running silently for weeks without saving anything. A system that looks fine on screen can be failing quietly at the recording stage, and the cause is rarely obvious from the outside. Our engineer works through the whole chain — cameras, recorder, storage and settings — until the fault is found and your footage is being captured again.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about cctv not recording

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could I fix a recording fault myself?

You can reasonably check the obvious: that the recorder is powered, the drive status light is normal, and the menus still show a recording schedule. Beyond that, diagnosing drive health, cable faults and firmware behaviour is engineer work, and resetting the recorder yourself can wipe footage and settings.

What exactly do you check on the visit?

We check the recorder's drive status and logs, confirm the recording schedule and quality settings, and trigger motion on each camera to verify footage is written and plays back. Where a camera is not saving, we test its cable and feed to separate wiring faults from recorder faults.

Is there anything I should not do before you arrive?

Please do not factory reset the recorder or reformat the drive, as that can destroy the footage and settings we need for diagnosis. Leave the system powered as it is, and note roughly when you first noticed recording stop.

Will you be able to recover footage from before the fault started?

Sometimes, but honestly not always. If the drive is still healthy, recent footage is usually recoverable; if the drive has failed, recovery depends on the nature of the failure. We will tell you what is realistically possible once we have seen the recorder, rather than promising anything before diagnosis.

How is the cost worked out?

You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts; parts are quoted separately.
