When your CCTV loses power, everything stops at once — cameras, recorder, remote viewing, notifications, the lot. That total nature is actually useful diagnostically, because power faults behave differently from camera or network faults and give clear clues about where the problem sits. Whether it followed a storm or arrived without warning, a power fault needs a proper diagnosis, because the cause is often not where the symptoms point.
How CCTV power faults happen
The most common causes are unglamorous. Power adapters and supplies age, and a failing adapter may deliver enough power for a while before failing completely, or deliver enough to run some equipment but not all of it. Connections work loose or corrode, particularly in lofts and outdoor junction boxes. A tripped circuit breaker or RCD can take out everything on that circuit — and CCTV kit sharing a circuit with other appliances is frequently the innocent bystander when something else trips it. Power cuts themselves do damage: the surge that often accompanies the return of mains power kills adapters and occasionally equipment outright. And sometimes the fault is upstream of all of it — a socket that has failed, wiring that needs attention, or a spur that has dropped out. Some of that is CCTV work; some of it is electrical work that we will identify and refer appropriately rather than improvise.
How we trace the fault
Our engineer starts at the wall and works outward. We check the socket and circuit the system draws from, test whether the breaker or RCD has tripped and why, and follow the power path to the recorder and each camera. Adapters and power supplies are tested under load, not just for output voltage on a meter, because supplies that read fine unloaded can still fail the equipment they serve. We inspect connections in lofts and outdoor boxes for looseness, corrosion and water ingress, and we check what the recorder and cameras report — equipment that boots but behaves oddly is often telling us its supply is marginal. If the fault turns out to be in your fixed wiring rather than the CCTV installation, we will say so plainly and explain what needs a qualified electrician.
Repairs and surge protection
Typical fixes include replacing failed adapters and power supplies with correctly specified units, reseating or replacing corroded connections, and resetting circuits — with the cause of any trip investigated, not just switched back on and forgotten. If equipment has been damaged by a surge, we will identify what has failed and quote replacements separately before fitting anything. This is also the moment to talk sensibly about resilience: surge protection on the supply path, and thinking about what happens to your recordings through a power cut. We will explain the options honestly without overselling — no protection makes a system bulletproof, but sensible measures reduce repeat failures.
Recording through power problems
A system that loses power stops recording, and gaps in your footage are the practical consequence — worth knowing if you ever need to explain a missing period to the police. Recordings are personal data, and as the system owner you remain responsible for using them lawfully and considerately: cameras should cover your own property, avoid unnecessarily filming neighbours' homes or public space, footage should be retained sensibly, and clips shared only appropriately, for example with the police if they request them. We configure the equipment; we do not provide legal advice.
Aftercare
After the repair, note that adapters that fail with age tend to be replaced in cohorts — if one has died of old age, its siblings fitted at the same time are candidates too, and it is worth mentioning that when you call. If your breaker trips again, do not simply reset it repeatedly; repeated trips mean something needs investigating.
When to call us
Book as soon as the system loses power, and tell us whether it followed a power cut, whether the breaker tripped, and which parts of the system are dead — all of it, or just some cameras. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
CCTV is completely dependent on power, and power faults take out whole systems in a way no individual camera fault ever does. Some follow a power cut; others creep up as adapters and supplies age. Our engineer traces where power is being lost, repairs it safely and confirms the whole system is drawing power correctly again.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about cctv power failure
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I safely check anything myself before booking?
Checking whether the recorder and adapters are plugged in and whether the socket works with another device is sensible, as is noting whether the breaker or RCD has tripped. Do not reset a tripped breaker repeatedly, open power supplies or work in lofts chasing cables — those are engineer tasks, and repeated resets hide the cause.
What do you check when the system has no power?
We start at the socket and circuit, test adapters and supplies under load, and trace the power path to the recorder and each camera, inspecting loft and outdoor connections for looseness and water ingress. If the fault is in your fixed wiring rather than the CCTV kit, we will tell you and explain what needs a qualified electrician.
My breaker keeps tripping — is that connected to my CCTV?
It can be, either because the CCTV equipment is faulty or because it shares a circuit with something else that is. One trip after a storm is common; repeated trips mean a cause that needs finding, and we will investigate whether the CCTV system is involved before anything is simply reset and left.
Will a power cut have damaged my recordings?
Sudden power loss can corrupt what a recorder was writing at that moment, but recordings already on the drive are usually intact, and a recorder that comes back cleanly after a cut often keeps working normally. If it beeps, reports drive errors or behaves oddly afterwards, that is worth a diagnosis rather than a shrug.
How is the cost calculated?
You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts; parts are quoted separately.
