Why a tap stops working on one side
A tap not working on one side of a mixer is one of the commonest call-outs we attend
Modern mixer taps control hot and cold with a single cartridge, or with two ceramic quarter-turn valves. When only one temperature runs, either one side of the cartridge has failed, one of the ceramic discs has worn, or debris has lodged in that side's waterway. On older two-handle mixers, the faulty side is usually a worn washer or a spindle that no longer lifts. Sometimes it is not the tap at all: a partly closed or blocked isolating valve, or a restriction in the hot supply from the cylinder or combi boiler, will present exactly the same way.
Why it is worth fixing quickly
A mixer tap that only runs one temperature is awkward for washing up, shaving and bathing, and the fault tends to progress. Ceramic discs and cartridges wear progressively, so the weak side may go from sluggish to nothing. If the underlying cause is debris, it can work into the good side too. And if the real fault is a restriction on the hot supply, that can also affect baths and showers, so an early diagnosis protects more than one fixture.
How we diagnose it
We isolate the tap and test each supply at the flexible tails before blaming the tap itself, which tells us instantly whether the problem is the tap or the pipework behind it. If supplies are healthy, we open the tap, inspect the cartridge or valves, and identify the failed component. We check the make and model so the replacement matches, and confirm the hot supply pressure is normal so the new part is not blamed for a pre-existing restriction.
How we fix a tap not working on one side
The repair is usually a replacement cartridge, ceramic disc insert, washer or spindle, fitted with new seals and tested through the full temperature range before we close up. We stock common cartridges for the main UK tap brands and complete most of these jobs in about an hour at our 100.00 fixed rate. Where a tap uses an uncommon cartridge we identify the part, tell you the cost of sourcing it, and return to fit it. If the diagnosis points to the hot supply rather than the tap, we will say so and explain the next step before doing further work.
Preventing the same failure
Occasionally soak the aerator and run both sides of the tap fully hot and cold, which shifts loose debris before it settles in a valve. If you are in a hard-water area, periodic descaling slows cartridge wear. After any pipework or boiler work, run every tap to flush disturbed sediment out of the system.
When to call us
Book a visit when one side runs weakly or not at all, when the water will not mix to a comfortable temperature, or when the faulty side started after plumbing work elsewhere. Catching it early usually means one inexpensive part.
What happens on the visit
We isolate the supplies, dismantle the tap on a mat where you can see it, and show you the failed cartridge or valve before replacing it with a matching part. The tap is rebuilt with new seals, run through the full hot and cold range, and the aerator is cleared before we finish. We tidy up and hand back a tap that mixes properly.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
When one side of a mixer tap refuses to deliver, the fault is almost always the cartridge or the supply to that side. We identify which, replace the failed part with a matching component, and restore a proper hot and cold mix. This tap not working fix is normally completed in a single visit.

Questions people ask about tap temperature fault repair
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Why does my mixer tap only run hot or only cold?
Usually a failed cartridge or a blocked waterway on one side of the tap. Less often, the supply to that side is restricted. We test the supplies first so we repair the right component.
Do you carry cartridges for all tap brands?
We stock common cartridges for most mainstream UK taps. For less common makes we identify the exact part and confirm availability and cost before ordering; you are never committed to an unknown bill.
What does this repair cost?
A standard single-visit repair takes about an hour and is 100.00 fixed. Unusual cartridges or additional parts are quoted separately and agreed with you before fitting.
Could the problem be my boiler rather than the tap?
Possibly, if hot flow is weak at the bath and shower too. We check the tap and its supplies first, and if the evidence points to the boiler or cylinder we will say so and advise the right route.
Is it better to replace the whole tap?
Not usually. A cartridge or valve replacement is far cheaper than a new tap and keeps a tap you are happy with. We will recommend replacement only where the body is worn or parts are genuinely unobtainable.
