Causes
A shower that will not drain may have a compacted blockage of hair, soap residue and debris at the grate or in the trap. The obstruction can form gradually, then reach a point where very little water passes. A displaced waste fitting, a damaged trap or a blockage farther along the pipe can also stop drainage. If other fixtures are affected at the same time, the problem may involve a wider part of the drainage system rather than only the shower.
A shower not draining clearing visit should begin with checking how much water remains, whether any flow is passing and whether other drains are behaving normally. Avoid dismantling a concealed waste if you do not know how it is secured.
Why it worsens
With the drainage route blocked, each additional shower adds water to the tray. It may eventually spill over the edge, reach bathroom flooring or seep through vulnerable joints. If the obstruction is compacted, repeated use of a plunger or improvised tool may move material farther into the pipe or disturb a fitting. Water escaping outside the tray can be mistaken for a blockage symptom, even though a separate leak may be present.
Do not keep testing the shower by running more water when the tray is already full. If water is close to escaping, stop use, keep the area clear and remove water only if this can be done safely. Chemical drain products require careful handling, may not reach the obstruction and should not be mixed. If any product has already been used, tell the plumber before work starts.
How we diagnose
The plumber will ask when the drain stopped, what was last put through it and whether sinks, toilets or baths are also slow or backing up. We inspect the grate and accessible waste components for trapped material, a stuck part or visible damage. A controlled test may be appropriate once it is safe to do so. If several fixtures are affected, we consider whether the issue may be beyond the shower's own waste route.
Some shower wastes are difficult to access without removing a panel or other finish. We will explain the limit of what can be seen and discuss any access needed before disturbing anything. We will not claim a concealed section has been checked if it was not accessible.
How we fix
If the blockage is reachable, the plumber removes the obstruction with a suitable method and checks the trap and grate for remaining debris or damage. The approach depends on the waste design and position of the restriction; not every fitting should be forced or dismantled. If a damaged waste component needs replacement or the obstruction seems farther along the drainage route, we explain the findings and discuss the next step before additional work.
We then check whether water passes through the accessible waste and look for leaks at visible connections where possible. If drainage remains stopped, that indicates that the obstruction was not fully accessible or another fault may be involved. A clearing visit may restore flow, but the result should be verified with a suitable test, not assumed from removing surface debris alone.
Prevention
Remove hair and visible debris from the grate regularly, and use a suitable hair catcher if the drain design allows one without restricting flow. Keep small objects, wipes and cotton buds away from the waste. Clean the accessible trap in line with the fitting guidance and address a drain that begins to slow before it stops completely. Routine cleaning reduces common build-up but will not correct damaged pipework or every deeper obstruction.
Be cautious with chemical cleaners: follow labels, avoid mixing products and tell a plumber what has been used. Avoid pushing rigid objects blindly into the waste. If a complete blockage returns after it has been cleared, arrange another assessment to check whether a deeper cause remains.
When to call
Call when water remains in the shower tray, drains only in tiny amounts, or backs up again shortly after a surface clean. Request shower drain unblocking when the tray will not clear; if flow returns but remains restricted, ask about a slow draining shower fix. Contact a shower drain plumber near me if the waste cannot be accessed safely or multiple fixtures are affected. Stop using the shower if water is near the tray edge, moisture appears below it, or the bathroom floor is becoming wet. If water reaches an electrical fitting, keep clear and seek urgent help.
Share how long the drain has been blocked, whether any water still passes and what products or tools have been used. Do not remove a fixed panel or force a drain tool if it could damage the tray, pipe or concealed fitting.
Book a call-out
Contact Maintenance Men and explain that the shower is not draining, how much water is standing and whether other fixtures are affected. We will inspect accessible parts, explain the likely cause and test the flow after clearing where practical. Ask about shower waste pipe unblocking if the obstruction appears to be beyond the trap. A blocked shower tray should not be used as normal until it is draining safely, so book an assessment if water will not clear.

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
When shower water stays in the tray instead of draining, stop using it until the obstruction is checked. A complete blockage may sit at the grate, in the trap or farther along the waste pipe. Maintenance Men inspects accessible components, removes a suitable obstruction and tests the drainage route where practical, explaining any further work that may be needed.

Questions people ask about shower not draining clearance
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Should I keep using the shower if the tray is full?
No. Stop adding water until the obstruction is checked, as continued use could cause the tray to overflow. If water is near electrical fittings, keep clear and seek urgent assistance.
Can a complete blockage be cleared from the grate?
Sometimes the material is accessible at the grate or trap, but a blockage may be farther along the waste. The plumber can inspect what is reachable and explain if further access is needed.
What if other drains are also backing up?
Tell the plumber when booking. Multiple affected fixtures may point to a broader drainage issue, so the problem may not be limited to the shower waste.
Is it safe to pour drain cleaner into standing water?
Follow the product label and do not mix products. If the shower is fully blocked or you are unsure whether the cleaner is suitable, avoid adding it and arrange an inspection; tell the plumber about any product already used.
How is the work priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
