Waterproofing exterior walls can mean several different things: repairing the cracks and joints that let rain through, applying a breathable water-repellent to sound masonry, or fitting a more comprehensive render system. Each has a place; none is a universal answer. The first step is to understand how water is reaching your wall and whether the wall can still release moisture from inside. This page explains how we assess and treat the problem without trapping water where it does damage.

Why exterior walls get wet

Wind-driven rain is the most common source, pushed into porous brick, eroded mortar and cracked render over time. Faulty gutters and downpipes soak one strip of wall continuously. Failed sills and frame seals funnel water into the wall around openings. Ground levels raised above the damp course bridge moisture into the base. And sometimes the wall is simply old, soft and porous enough that it absorbs rain faster than it dries.

Waterproofing cannot fix a leaking gutter, a cracked sill or a bridged damp course — those faults have to be repaired first. Coating over them just hides the evidence and moves the water somewhere less visible.

Breathable treatment, not a plastic skin

On a sound, dry wall with open pores but intact mortar and render, a breathable water-repellent can reduce how much rain enters while allowing internal moisture vapour to escape. It is not a paint: the treatment penetrates the surface and changes how water beads, leaving the wall's appearance largely unchanged. The important word is breathable. Impermeable coatings seal the surface both ways; water that is already inside the wall cannot escape, and then the render blows, salts crystallise and the damage grows behind the coating.

A treatment is appropriate only after we confirm the wall is sound, dry and free of the causes described above. Where mortar is eroded, it is repointed first. Where render is cracked or blown, it is repaired or replaced first. Where walls are damp from below, the bridging or damp course issue is dealt with. If water is entering through a defect, the defect is sealed — treatment is no substitute.

How we assess and treat

We inspect the elevation, check pointing and render, look for cracks and hollow areas, test for damp where it is visible, and trace gutters, downpipes, sills, ground levels and drainage. We ask how the problem behaves with rainfall and seasons, and check inside for corresponding stains. The outcome might be repointing, a render repair, a gutter repair, correcting ground levels, or — only if the wall is sound and suitable — a water-repellent treatment. We explain what each option can and cannot do before you choose.

Limits, weather and aftercare

Water-repellent treatment reduces absorption under ordinary rainfall but is not a guarantee against leaks, driving rain or future damp. It needs appropriate dry conditions to cure, and application timing follows the forecast. Treatments weather gradually and may need renewing according to the product and exposure; we explain the expected maintenance rather than imply a one-time solution. We cannot guarantee a wall will never dampen again, but sound repairs and maintenance give it its best protection.

After treatment, keep gutters clear, inspect pointing and render each spring, and report any damp patches inside that return after rain. Early attention to a new crack or gutter leak is much cheaper than another wet wall.

Booking your assessment

Book through maintenance-men.com or by phone. You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts and materials quoted separately. Tell us where the wall is damp, how it behaves after rain and whether the wall is brick or rendered, and send photos if you can.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Waterproofing a wall sounds straightforward, but the wrong coating can trap moisture and make a damp problem worse. Our visit identifies how water is reaching your wall, repairs the faults first, and recommends a breathable treatment only when the wall, its condition and its construction make it appropriate.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about waterproofing exterior walls

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I waterproof my walls myself with a masonry sealer?

DIY water-repellent treatments can suit a sound, dry wall, but only after the cause of damp is understood and faults are repaired first. Applying an impermeable sealer to a damp or cracked wall traps moisture and can make the damage worse. If you can see staining or the wall is already damp, get it assessed before coating anything.

How do you decide whether waterproofing treatment is right for my wall?

We inspect the wall's pointing, render, cracks and hollow areas, trace gutters, sills and ground levels, and check how the damp behaves with rain. If a fault is letting water in, that gets repaired first; if the wall is sound, dry and porous, a breathable water-repellent may help. We explain the options and their limits before quoting.

Is waterproofing an exterior wall a permanent fix?

No — water-repellent treatments weather gradually and may need renewing, and they do not guarantee against leaks, driving rain or future damp. Good maintenance of gutters, pointing and render matters just as much as the treatment itself. We give you practical aftercare and explain what to watch for so you can address new faults early.

Can you waterproof a wall that is already damp?

We would not apply a water-repellent to a damp wall without first finding and fixing the source, because treatment can trap moisture inside. Depending on what we find, the answer may be a gutter repair, repointing, render replacement, correcting ground levels or specialist damp work. We will be honest about what is suitable and refer if the job goes beyond our scope.

How much does exterior wall waterproofing cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the recommended work is quoted and approved before we start, with parts and materials quoted separately. The price depends on whether the wall needs repairs first or is ready for treatment, so we assess it before giving a figure.
