Footrests and leg rests lead a hard life. They lead the chair through doorways, catch on kerbs and steps, get stood on during transfers whether anyone admits it or not, and double as handles whenever something needs pushing. So it is no surprise that they are among the most commonly damaged parts of a wheelchair — bent hangers, cracked plates, worn latches, hinges that no longer swing cleanly. This page covers what goes wrong, what we do about it, and when a footrest problem is really a frame problem wearing a footrest costume.
What goes wrong with footrests
The common failures are mechanical and visible. A hanger bends after an impact, leaving the footplate angled or dragging on the ground. A footplate cracks, usually plastic, at its mounting points. Latches and release mechanisms wear so the rest will not lock firmly into position, swinging or dropping under load. Height adjustment mechanisms slip so the plate slowly sinks. Hinges and pivots stiffen or develop play. And fixings work loose with vibration, letting the whole assembly rattle.
There is a subtler version: a footrest that sits wrong because the frame or hanger mount behind it has been knocked out of shape. That matters, because repeatedly forcing a bent mount back into place by adjusting the footrest hides damage that should be assessed. We look for it during diagnosis.
Why footrests matter more than they seem
A footrest is not just comfort. It supports the user's legs and feet in position, affects posture and circulation, and keeps feet clear of the ground and out of the casters' path. A footplate that drags can catch on pavements and stop the chair abruptly. A leg rest that swings loose can trap fingers or fail to support the leg at all. A plate that shifts under load changes how someone sits, which over weeks can create discomfort well beyond the footrest itself. So a footrest repair is a proper repair, done to a standard that holds weight, not a cosmetic touch-up.
How we diagnose and repair
We examine the whole assembly: the hanger and its mount on the frame, the footplate and its fixings, the latch or clamp mechanism, the height adjustment, and the hinge pivots. We load the footrest the way it is used — standing pressure, transfer pressure, downward force — and see what moves that should not. Where the damage is a bent hanger, a worn latch or loose fixings, we repair or replace the affected parts with manufacturer-approved components and refit securely. Where the plate is cracked or the mechanism worn beyond adjustment, we quote a replacement matched to your chair's model.
Then we test: the rest locks firmly, adjusts smoothly, holds load without shifting, and clears the ground by the right amount with the user's normal foot position. If the diagnosis reveals that the fault is actually in the frame mount or the chair's structure, we say so plainly — that becomes a frame assessment rather than a footrest job, and we will not pretend otherwise.
What you can do yourself
Tightening visible fixings is reasonable DIY if your manual covers it. Cleaning pivots and keeping the mechanism free of grit helps too. What we would steer you away from is bending a hanger back by force, standing on a footplate to test it repeatedly, or using a footrest with a cracked plate — cracks in load-bearing plastic spread, and the failure happens under someone's feet.
When to repair versus replace
Repair suits bent fixings, worn latches that can be adjusted, loose assemblies and stiff pivots. Replacement suits cracked plates, bent hangers that will not hold alignment, and mechanisms worn past adjustment. We will tell you which is which, quote honestly for either, and never fit a footrest that is the nearest thing to hand rather than the right thing for your model.
Booking
Tell us the make and model, which footrest or leg rest is affected, what happened to it, and whether it still locks into position. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is hourly at a rate depending on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost — including any replacement parts — is quoted and approved before we begin.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Footrests take more punishment than almost any part of a wheelchair — kicked, knocked through doorways, used as grab handles and caught on kerbs. When one bends, cracks or works loose, it affects comfort, posture and safety. We repair what can be repaired properly and replace what cannot, with the cost agreed before we start.

Questions people ask about wheelchair footrest repair
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I repair a bent footrest myself?
Bending a hanger back by force is not something we would recommend — it can crack the mount or the frame behind it, and a footrest that looks straight may not be. Tightening visible fixings is reasonable DIY if your manual covers it. Beyond that, a proper assessment is the safer route.
What do you check on a footrest repair visit?
The whole assembly: hanger and frame mount, footplate and fixings, latch or clamp, height adjustment and pivots — all tested under realistic load. We repair or replace with manufacturer-approved parts and confirm the rest locks firmly, holds weight and clears the ground correctly before we leave.
Is a cracked footplate dangerous?
Yes, it is worth taking seriously. Cracks in load-bearing plastic spread under repeated pressure, and the failure tends to happen when someone's weight is on the plate during a transfer. Stop using that footrest and have it assessed rather than waiting for it to give way.
The footrest won't stay locked in position — what causes that?
Usually a worn or damaged latch or clamp, sometimes a worn fixing hole where it mounts. Both are repairable, but a latch that will not hold under load is a safety issue for the leg it supports, so it is worth booking promptly rather than propping it up with something in the meantime.
How is the cost worked out?
There is a booking fee paid when you book, and hourly labour at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the repair, including any replacement footrest or parts, is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts itemised separately.
