Why floating shelves are a precision job

A floating shelf shows you everything that went wrong with it. The concealed bracket lives inside the shelf, so there is no visible hardware to forgive a gap at the back, a tilt along the length, or a hole drilled a few millimetres shallow. When it is done well, the shelf appears to grow out of the wall; when it is done quickly, everyone notices. Fitting one is therefore mostly measurement, levelling and drilling to exact depth — done patiently.

What we check first

Floating shelves carry less than bracketed shelves of the same size, because the load hangs on a concealed bar inside the shelf rather than resting on brackets underneath it. So the honest questions come first: how heavy is the shelf, what will it hold, and what is the wall made of? Solid masonry takes the bracket with anchors matched to the shelf's design. Plasterboard is the harder case — a floating shelf on hollow fixings alone will flex and sag under real load — so we aim for studs or noggin pieces where the position allows, use quality hollow-wall anchors within their limits where it does not, and tell you plainly what the arrangement will carry.

We also plan the drill positions around the usual routes of cables and pipes, and we will not make a hole we are not satisfied about. If a planned position cannot take a confident fixing, we agree an alternative before proceeding.

The fitting method

The bracket is the job. We mark its height from a level line across the wall, not from the floor — floors are rarely level and shelves are — then position the bracket holes, drill to the exact depth the shelf's instructions call for, and fix the bracket set square and true. The drilling depth matters more than anything else: too shallow and the shelf will not seat against the wall; too deep and the anchors lose grip. We follow the shelf manufacturer's instructions throughout, using the fixings specified for that shelf.

Then the shelf itself: slid onto the bracket, checked for level along its length and for an even gap against the wall, and locked per its design. Small adjustments at this point are free; after the fact they mean new holes in the wrong places.

What to have ready

The shelf with its supplied bracket and fixings — floating shelves are normally supplied with both, and the shelf's own hardware is the right hardware. If yours has none, tell us when booking and we will discuss what is needed, quoted separately as materials. Have a firm idea of the height, and of what the shelf will hold: two small plants and a frame is a different job from a row of hardbacks, and the second one may genuinely be better as a bracketed shelf — we will say so.

Limits, said plainly

Floating shelves have real weight limits, and we state them rather than let them be discovered. A very long floating span or a heavy load is a case for a different fixing approach or a different shelf, and we would rather recommend that than fit something that sags by spring. We do not chase cables into walls or alter electrics; if you want the shelf to hide a cable run to a television, we can discuss surface or agreed-route concealment within non-invasive limits.

Aftercare

Check after the first week that the shelf still sits tight to the wall, and keep the load sensible — spread it out, keep heavy items near the wall end of the span rather than at the tip, and do not use the front edge as a handle. If the shelf ever loosens, take the load off and have it refitted rather than simply tightened in place; a loosened floating shelf usually means the fixing needs redoing properly.

Booking

Tell us the shelf's length and depth, the wall type, what it will hold, and when you would like the visit; same-day may be available. You pay a booking fee on booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how much notice you give, and the full cost is confirmed and approved before work starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A floating shelf hides all its fixings inside the shelf itself, which is why it looks so clean — and why a slightly wonky one is so obvious. The hidden bracket has to be set perfectly level and drilled to the exact depth, because there are no visible brackets to excuse a gap at the back. Precision is the whole job.

Questions people ask about floating shelf installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fit a floating shelf myself?

With a drill, a level and patience on a solid wall, many people manage it. The two common failures are depth — the concealed bracket needs holes drilled to an exact depth, and guesswork shows as a shelf that will not seat against the wall — and plasterboard, where the shelf flexes under load if the fixings are hollow-wall only. If either describes your situation, it is a quick job for us and a frustrating one alone.

What do you do on the visit?

We check the shelf's design, its weight and what it will carry, and the wall construction at the position. Then we mark from a level line, drill the bracket holes to the exact depth the maker specifies, fix the bracket square and true, and seat the shelf with an even gap against the wall. The manufacturer's instructions and supplied hardware are followed throughout.

How much weight can a floating shelf take?

Less than a bracketed shelf of the same size, because the load hangs on a concealed bar rather than resting on brackets underneath. A small floating shelf carrying a plant and a frame is fine on a good fixing; a row of hardbacks is a case where we would recommend a bracketed shelf instead. We state the honest limit for the shelf and wall we have fitted.

Can a floating shelf go on plasterboard?

It can, with the same caveat as any plasterboard fixing: the bracket wants to land on studs or noggins where possible, and quality hollow-wall anchors within their limits where not. Because a floating shelf has no visible supports, any flex under load is immediately obvious, so we are candid about what the arrangement will carry before fitting.

How does pricing work?

There is a booking fee on booking, and the hourly labour rate depends on how much notice you give. We quote the full cost before starting and you approve it. If your shelf has no bracket or fixings with it, they are identified and quoted separately as materials.
