How an overload develops

Every circuit is designed for a limit, and appliances draw different amounts of current while operating. High-demand equipment used together on the same circuit can exceed that limit, causing a breaker to disconnect power. Extension leads and multiway adaptors do not create extra capacity; they only add outlets to the same supply. However, a trip under load might also indicate a failing appliance, damaged cable or defective protective device. It takes testing to tell the difference, especially if the problem occurs only when several items run together.

Notice what was running

Make a list of equipment that was on when the trip occurred, including items that cycle on and off such as heating elements or pumps. Note whether the circuit fails immediately, after several minutes or only when a particular appliance starts. Do not repeatedly recreate the combination to prove an overload. If one socket is hot, cracked or discoloured, stop using it and tell the electrician. If the breaker will not stay on with appliances unplugged, the cause may be in the fixed installation rather than total demand.

What the engineer checks

The electrician identifies which circuit has tripped and verifies the board labels, then checks the circuit and protective device. They consider the expected load, distribution of sockets, condition of accessories and the appliances reported. Electrical tests help rule out faults that could mimic overload, such as leakage, a short or deteriorated wiring. Where necessary, items are disconnected or tested safely. The diagnosis should explain why the protection operated; simply fitting a larger breaker can leave wiring exposed to excess current and is not a safe remedy.

Options for a safer load

If demand is the issue, the electrician can explain which appliances are sharing the circuit and whether using them at different times is adequate. Depending on the installation, a separate circuit or changes to the wiring may be an option, but suitability depends on the property's layout and electrical capacity. If one item is faulty, it should remain unplugged until repaired. The electrician will describe the practical choices and costs before work begins. After any repair or alteration, the relevant circuit is checked before use.

Everyday habits that help

Use extension leads only as temporary accessories and stay within their ratings; do not daisy-chain adaptors or cover a lead with rugs. Avoid running several high-demand appliances from one outlet strip. A plug that feels hot, a lead with damaged insulation or a buzzing socket should not remain in service. The circuit design, not just the number of wall sockets, determines how loads are shared. Ask the electrician which circuits serve high-demand equipment rather than guessing from room location.

What if it trips again?

If the circuit trips even with usual loads disconnected, leave it off and arrange another check. If it trips only with a particular item, unplug and stop using that item. Tell the electrician exactly what combination was in use and how long it ran; that is more useful than repeatedly resetting the breaker. If there is a burning smell, visible damage or heat, switch off the supply only if safe and seek urgent help. Do not replace the breaker with a higher-rated device to stop nuisance trips.

Book an overload assessment

We can check a circuit that trips during normal use and explain whether the demand or an underlying fault is responsible. Same-day and emergency appointments may be available. You pay a booking fee when arranging the visit, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The complete cost is quoted before work starts for your approval.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A circuit can trip when the appliances connected to it draw more current than it is designed to carry. But overload is only one possible cause, so we check the circuit and equipment before recommending changes. We can explain safer ways to distribute everyday loads and whether the installation needs repair.

What our customers say about our electrical service

4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews

Does what it says on the tin

No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.

Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights

Turned up when they said

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about overloaded circuit

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fix an overloaded circuit by using an extension lead?

An extension lead does not add circuit capacity and may put more outlets on the same circuit. Avoid daisy-chaining adaptors or using a lead for high-demand equipment.

How will the electrician tell overload from a fault?

They identify the circuit and protective device, ask what was running, then test the wiring and equipment. A trip under load can also be caused by damaged wiring or a faulty appliance.

Can an overloaded circuit start a fire?

Protective devices are designed to disconnect an overloaded circuit, but warm sockets, damaged leads or repeated trips need attention. Stop using any hot or scorched fitting.

Can the electrician add a separate circuit?

It may be an option, depending on the installation and the appliances involved. The engineer will assess suitability and explain the scope and cost before any work begins.')],

How is the visit and repair charged?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
