How Buried Cables Fail
Underground cable has a hard life, and faults develop in familiar ways:
- Garden tools — spades, forks and edgers are the number one cause: one stroke can nick the sheath or cut a conductor, and the fault may show immediately or months later as moisture works in.
- Moisture ingress — water entering through a damaged point or a poor joint spreads along the cable, corroding conductors and creating earth leakage.
- Rodent damage — rats and squirrels gnaw buried and ducted cable, and the damage is invisible until the circuit misbehaves.
- Frost and ground movement — freezing and thawing shift the soil, stressing cable and joints until a conductor parts or the insulation cracks.
- Old or undersized cable — cable buried decades ago, or never rated for its load, degrades and eventually faults, often at the worst possible moment.
What the Symptoms Look Like
A buried fault usually announces itself as a circuit that trips (especially in wet weather, when leakage is worst), an outbuilding or garden area that has lost power, or a supply that behaves erratically — flickering, weak, intermittent. Any of these with cable crossing open ground is worth investigating promptly: a nicked sheath that leaks today can short out or corrode through later, and a fault that grows under the lawn is harder to find, not easier.
How We Locate the Fault
We confirm the circuit is dead and safe to work on, then test from the ends: insulation resistance between conductors and to earth tells us the fault's character, and length-based measurements place it roughly along the run. From there we narrow to a precise position using section testing and, where the route allows, tracing equipment — the aim is to know within a stride where to dig before a spade touches soil. If your cable route was recorded when it was installed, that shortens the work considerably. You will be shown the estimate of where the fault lies and given a firm price before any digging starts.
How We Repair It
Small, clean excavations, exactly where the testing points. At the fault, the damaged section is exposed and assessed: a localised nick can often be cut out and the cable rejoined with a proper underground-rated joint; a longer or badly degraded section is replaced with new cable, laid at correct depth with protection where it needs it. The repair is sealed and rated for burial — never a taped joint in the ground — and the trench is backfilled and the surface made good. The full circuit is retested before power returns, and we record the new route for your future reference.
Aftercare and Prevention
Keep a note of where garden cable runs cross open ground — a simple sketch saved in a drawer saves hours if trouble ever returns. Before any serious digging or fencing work, ask us to mark or confirm the route; moving or protecting a cable beforehand is far cheaper than a fault callout after the spade has been through it. And if a circuit starts tripping in wet weather, treat it as the early warning this page describes rather than waiting for it to fail outright.
When to Call Us
Book promptly when an outbuilding or garden circuit has lost power for no obvious reason, when a circuit trips repeatedly with cable running underground, or when you have just completed garden work and the power has since misbehaved. Book urgently if anything is hot, smelling, or scorching, or if the RCD will not reset at all — switch the circuit off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely and call us the same day.
Book Your Underground Fault Diagnosis Today
We locate and repair underground cable faults across the West Midlands, with the test equipment to find them precisely and the kit to repair them properly. Call or book online and tell us what the cable feeds, roughly where it runs, and what started the trouble — if it failed right after garden work, say so, because that tells us where to look first. One visit, one hole, one proper repair.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work

A fault in a buried cable is the most troublesome kind: the supply has failed and the problem is somewhere under your lawn. Old-school fault-finding means digging trenches on speculation; ours means testing to locate the fault to within a metre or two, then digging one careful hole. We find it, repair or replace the damaged section properly, and leave the garden as we found it.

4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews
Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights
Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about underground cable fault
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Will you have to dig up my whole lawn?
No — that is the point of proper fault location. Testing places the fault within a metre or two before any digging, so the excavation is one small, targeted hole. If a section needs replacing we will agree the route with you first. The trench is backfilled and the surface made good when the repair is done.
Can I find the fault myself?
You can sensibly rule out the obvious — check the circuit at the consumer unit and any equipment at the far end. Beyond that, buried faults need insulation testing and measurement to locate, and probing around with a spade risks a second fault on top of the first. Testing first is what keeps the digging to one hole.
Why does the fault get worse in wet weather?
Moisture reaching a damaged point leaks current to earth, and the more water around, the more it leaks — so the RCD trips on wet days and holds on dry ones. That pattern is strong evidence of a buried fault rather than a fitting problem, and it tends to worsen as corrosion spreads along the conductor from the entry point.
What will the repair cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
Can the cable just be replaced entirely instead of repaired?
Sometimes that is the better answer — if the cable is old, undersized or has already been repaired before, replacing the run costs little more than a repair and removes the risk of the next fault. If the cable is otherwise sound, a proper underground-rated joint repair is quicker and leaves the garden less disturbed. We will quote both honestly.
