Designing Lighting That Suits Your Garden

Installation starts with a plan, because lighting is only as good as where it points and where it lives:

  • Purpose first — path lighting for safety, feature lighting for planting and architecture, task lighting over seating and cooking areas, and security lighting where you need it.
  • Warmth and brightness — modern LED fittings come in warm, neutral and cool tones; matching the tone to the space makes the difference between inviting and institutional.
  • Positions that survive — fittings need to sit where mowers, strimmers, footfall and frost will not destroy them, with cabling routed away from future digging and planting.
  • Control — switches, sensors, timers or app control; agreed in advance so the cabling supports how you will actually use it.

Why Outdoor Lighting Needs Proper Installation

Garden lighting lives in a hostile environment: rain, frost, soil, damp soil bacteria, UV and physical knocks. Fittings that are simply plugged together with unsuitable connectors, or wired with indoor-grade joints buried in soil, fail within a season or two — usually the first wet autumn. Proper installation means weatherproof (IP-rated) fittings, connections made in sealed weather-rated enclosures, cable routed and protected correctly, and the whole system protected by an RCD so any future fault trips the supply safely rather than doing anything worse.

How We Plan the Installation

We visit, walk the garden with you and agree what each area needs: where the fittings go, how bright and how warm, where the transformer or drivers will live (dry, ventilated, accessible), and how the switching will work. We check your consumer unit has the capacity and protection for the new circuit, and agree the route so digging and disturbance are minimised. You get a clear plan and a firm price before anything is dug or drilled.

How We Install It

Cable runs are laid at sensible depth and protected where they cross paths or beds, with the route recorded so future garden work knows where not to dig. Fittings are mounted solidly and sealed, connections are made in proper weather-rated enclosures — never bare in the soil — and transformers or drivers are housed where they stay dry and serviceable. The circuit is connected at the consumer unit with correct RCD protection, and every fitting is tested, aimed and adjusted in the dark where possible so you see the effect before we leave. We make good every surface we pass through.

Aftercare and Getting the Best From It

Garden lighting needs little attention when installed well: keep growth trimmed back from fittings, avoid pressure-washing them directly, and use the correct replacement lamps where fittings are serviceable. We will show you where the system's protection sits at the consumer unit and label it, so you always know what controls what. If a fitting is ever damaged by garden work, tell us early — a knocked fitting is a ten-minute check, a waterlogged one is a replacement.

When to Book the Installation

Book whenever the plan is ready — spring and autumn are popular, but there is no bad time for a planned installation. Book earlier if you are landscaping or building in the garden, so the cabling can go in before surfaces and planting are finished; installing around existing gardens is also routine, just a little more careful.

Book Your Garden Lighting Installation Today

We design and install garden lighting across the West Midlands, from a few path lights to full multi-zone schemes, with visits arranged around your week. Call or book online and tell us the size of the garden, what you want it for, and any fittings you already have in mind — we will turn up with a plan, agree the price before starting, and leave your garden glowing.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Good garden lighting transforms how you use your outside space after dark — paths, seating areas, borders and features all become usable and welcoming. Done badly, it becomes a maintenance headache that trips every autumn. We design the layout with you, install weatherproof fittings on properly protected wiring, and leave you with lighting that works in every season.

What our customers say about our electrical service

4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews

Does what it says on the tin

No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.

Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights

Turned up when they said

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about garden lighting installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Mains voltage or low voltage — which is better for a garden?

Low-voltage LED systems are the usual choice for gardens: they are efficient, the fittings run cool, and they suit a central transformer feeding many lights. Mains-voltage fittings suit some positions and larger layouts. We will recommend based on your garden's size, the fittings you want and where a transformer could safely live — not on one-size-fits-all rules.

Can I install garden lighting myself?

Plug-in low-voltage kits can be DIY-friendly, but anything connected to your household electrics involves consumer unit connections, RCD protection and buried cable that must survive years of weather. The failure mode of DIY garden lighting is familiar: it works in summer and trips every time it rains. We install it to stay dry and protected.

Will the installation mean digging up my garden?

Some, but it is planned to be minimal. Cable runs are routed along edges and existing features where possible, buried at sensible depth only where they cross open ground, and the route is recorded for you. We agree the plan with you first, and we make good anything we disturb.

What does garden lighting installation cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.

Can lighting be added to later?

Yes, if the design allows for it — which is why we plan capacity at the start. The transformer or circuit is chosen with headroom, and spare connections can be anticipated at the likely future positions. Tell us if you expect to extend the scheme, and we will install the groundwork to make additions simple rather than a second project.
