Damp washing at the end of a cycle is the most common dryer complaint and the least specific, because several unrelated faults produce the same result. The dryer may be heating properly but moving too little air, sensing moisture incorrectly and stopping early, or losing heat through a failing element or thermostat. It may also be a heat-pump machine whose condenser is clogged or whose refrigerant circuit is no longer performing.
Free checks that solve a surprising number of cases
Clean the lint filter. On a condensing dryer, remove and clean the condenser as the manual describes, and empty the water container, because a full container can interrupt a cycle. Untangle the load; sheets twisted into a rope dry unevenly and fool the sensor. Check the vent hose for kinks and confirm the outside flap opens when the machine runs. Use the correct programme for the fabric, since an eco or low-energy cycle deliberately runs cooler and longer, and try a load that fills the drum about halfway rather than cramming it.
What the visit examines
We measure the heater current and the temperature rise across the drum, which separates a heat fault from an airflow fault. Airflow is tested at the filter, the condenser and the vent outlet. The moisture sensor bars inside the drum are inspected for coating and tested for continuity, and the board's sensing circuit is checked. On heat-pump models we look at the evaporator and condenser coils, the fan and the compressor, and we check for fault codes stored from earlier cycles.
The causes we find most often
A lint-blocked condenser or vent reducing airflow. Moisture sensor bars coated with fabric softener residue, so the machine cannot detect dampness and stops early. A partially failed heater. A door seal that no longer seals, letting cool room air in. A heat-pump circuit that has lost performance. Occasionally a board fault that misreads the sensor. The pattern of when the load is damp, at the end only or throughout, helps narrow it down.
Repair, parts and economics
Cleaning and sensor replacement are modest repairs with a good outcome. Heater and thermostat work is straightforward on vented and condenser machines. Heat-pump faults are the difficult category: fan and sensor problems are repairable, but a sealed refrigerant circuit is not something we open or recharge, and that work belongs with a specialist. If the repair cost approaches the price of a new machine, we will say so.
Safety and appliance care
Do not run the dryer with the vent disconnected to "improve airflow"; that pushes moist air and lint into the room and can trip a thermal cut-out. Do not bypass thermal protection. If the machine is cutting out mid-cycle, stop using it and have it checked. Keep the room ventilated and above a reasonable temperature, because a cold, humid space slows drying for any appliance. Never stack items on top of the dryer or block the air intake, and keep the rear clearance the manual specifies, because a machine that cannot breathe will always dry slowly.
Getting better results afterwards
Shake out items before loading, dry similar fabrics together and avoid overfilling. Clean the filter every cycle, clean the condenser monthly on condensing models, and have the vent run cleaned periodically. If your machine has a dryness setting, use the cupboard-dry option rather than a timed cycle, and let the sensor do its job.
Booking the appointment
Tell us the dryer type, brand and model, how damp the load is and whether it is damp everywhere or only at seams and thick hems. Mention whether the machine reports a fault code, whether the cycle ends early, and what you have already cleaned. That shapes what we check first.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A cycle finishes, the buzzer sounds, and the washing is still noticeably damp at the seams and hems. That is not just an inconvenience; it usually means one of three things is underperforming, and each has a different fix. The visit looks at heat, airflow and the sensing that decides when the load is dry, so the answer is based on measurement.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle
Good job, slightly late
Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.
Job: Toaster Not Working
No mess left behind
Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about clothes not drying properly
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
What can I safely check before booking?
Clean the lint filter and condenser, empty the water container, untangle the load and check the vent hose for kinks. Confirm the outside flap opens when the dryer runs. Do not disconnect the vent or run the machine with panels removed.
Why would the dryer stop while clothes are still damp?
Usually because the moisture sensor is coated or faulty and misreads the load, or because the selected programme ends on a time rather than a dryness reading. We test the sensor bars and the sensing circuit during the visit.
Is a damp load a safety issue?
Not directly, but it often accompanies restricted airflow, and the same conditions that reduce drying can cause overheating. If the machine cuts out or the cabinet gets very hot, stop using it until it has been checked.
Can a heat-pump dryer with this problem be repaired?
Sometimes. Fan, sensor, airflow and drainage faults are repairable. A fault in the sealed refrigerant circuit is not something we open or recharge, and we would refer that to a specialist after explaining the likely cost.
How do you price the visit and repair?
The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts, and any parts are identified and priced separately.
