Urgent jobs can often be booked for today. Ask when you book and we will confirm the slot before you pay anything.

Installing a small appliance sounds trivial, and for many it is: plug it in and switch it on. The complications appear when the plug is not moulded, when the appliance is rated higher than the socket circuit comfortably provides, when the cable will not reach without an extension lead trailing across a worktop, or when the instruction book specifies clearances the chosen spot does not have. Getting those right at the start avoids a fault later.

What installation actually covers

For a plug-in appliance, installation is a defined piece of work: confirm the supply is suitable, connect the appliance safely, position it as the maker requires, test it, and demonstrate correct use. That means checking the socket is sound and earthed, fitting or checking the plug with the correct fuse rating for the appliance's wattage, ensuring the cable is not strained or trapped, and confirming ventilation clearances. For appliances with a water supply, such as some coffee machines, it means checking the existing connection is compatible rather than altering plumbing.

The supply question

A small appliance should be matched to its circuit. A 3kW kettle or a large microwave draws a substantial current, and plugging it into an existing ring main is normal — but not into a spur that already feeds a washing machine, and not through a multi-way adaptor shared with a heater. We check the socket, the circuit it belongs to and what else is on it. We do not install new circuits, add sockets or alter fixed wiring as part of this visit; if the supply is inadequate, that is a separate electrical job and we will say so plainly rather than improvising.

Plugs, cables and fuses

A moulded plug is simply checked, not rewired. A rewirable plug needs the correct fuse — 3A for low-power appliances, 13A for high-draw ones, with the maker's rating on the label as the authority — and the cable grip must be tight so the inner cores never take the strain. Cable length is often the real problem: an appliance whose flex will not reach tempts people into an extension lead across a wet area, which is exactly the wrong solution. We will reposition the appliance where the maker's clearances allow, or tell you that a different socket arrangement is needed.

Built-in and heavy items

Some "small" appliances are neither small nor light: a microwave over a worktop, a coffee machine plumbed to a supply, an air fryer with a large footprint needing clearance at the back and sides. Where an appliance is to be fitted into a housing or under a shelf, the clearances in the instructions are the requirement, not a suggestion. We check that heat can escape and that the door or drawer operates without fouling.

Testing and handover

Before we finish, the appliance is powered up and run through its basic functions: heating, motor, display, any water system primed as instructed. We check for unusual noise, heat at the plug, and correct operation of the controls. Then we will show you what matters for your model — the maximum fill, the clearances, what should not go in it, and how to clean it safely. If something is not right, better to find it now than after the packaging is gone.

Limits worth stating

We work with existing, accessible services. We do not create new circuits, extend ring mains, install gas connections or carry out plumbing alterations beyond connecting to an existing compatible supply. Where an appliance needs a dedicated circuit or a plumber, we will tell you at the visit rather than attempt it. If a new appliance turns out to be faulty out of the box, that is a warranty matter with the retailer and we will say so.

Booking

Book online with the appliance type, make and model, and where you want it positioned. The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, and any parts such as plugs or cable are quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A new kettle, microwave, coffee machine or food processor should be a two-minute job, until you find the plug needs wiring, the cable is too short, or the socket in the corner is not what you assumed. Our visit covers safe connection on an existing supply, positioning that respects ventilation, and a proper function test before we leave.

Exactly what was quoted

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle

Good job, slightly late

Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.

Job: Toaster Not Working

No mess left behind

Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about small appliance installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I not just plug it in myself?

For a moulded plug and a spare socket, often yes. A visit is worth it when the plug needs wiring, the flex will not reach safely, the socket's condition is doubtful, or the appliance needs clearance or a water connection you are unsure about.

What does the visit include?

Checking the socket and circuit, fitting or checking the plug with the correct fuse, positioning with the maker's clearances, connecting any existing compatible water supply, a function test and a short handover on safe use. The appliance is then run through its basic functions before we leave.

Will you fit a new socket for it?

No. This visit covers connection to an existing supply. Adding sockets or altering fixed wiring is a separate electrical job, and we will advise you on it rather than attempt it as part of an installation.

My appliance came with a European plug. Can you sort that?

In many cases the correct approach is a proper plug replacement rather than an adaptor, and the fuse rating must match the appliance. We can do that where the cable and appliance allow it, and we will not use a travel adaptor as a permanent solution.

How is the cost calculated?

The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost and you approve it before work begins; any parts are identified and priced separately.
