What causes temperatures to swing

Instability usually comes from one of three places. First, airflow: a partially blocked vent, an over-packed shelf or a faulty fan lets cold air stop reaching parts of the cabinet, so readings swing with how the appliance is loaded. Second, the door: a tired seal or a hinge out of alignment lets warm room air in every time the door moves, and the temperature creeps up between openings.

Third, the controls: a thermostat or sensor drifting out of calibration, or an electronic control board behaving erratically, makes the appliance cool unevenly regardless of the air path. Less often, a compressor that cuts out intermittently or a condenser choked with dust sits behind the pattern. Usage matters too: a fridge opened constantly during a busy household's morning rush, or standing next to an oven or radiator, can swing with the room even when everything is healthy, which is why we look at the whole situation rather than a single component. Recording when the swings happen makes that picture clearer.

How we diagnose on the visit

The engineer starts with the cheap explanations: settings, loading, where the appliance stands and how much clearance it has, and the state of the door seals and hinges. We check for visible frost patterns, which tell us a lot about airflow and defrost behaviour.

We then test the temperature control components and the fans, and observe how the compressor behaves over the visit — starting cleanly, running steadily, or cutting out. If you can keep a note of what the temperatures do across a day before we arrive, that pattern helps us narrow the fault faster. Where the evidence points at the sealed refrigerant system, we stop and explain, because that is specialist work we do not undertake.

Food safety between visits

Until the cause is fixed, treat the appliance as unreliable. Keep a fridge thermometer inside so you can see what the cabinet is actually doing rather than guessing, and move high-risk items such as raw meat, fish and chilled ready meals to a dependable fridge if you have one. Judge everything else by the storage guidance on the packaging; we deliberately avoid giving fixed safe durations because they vary by product and how the food has been handled.

Repairs we typically quote

Where the fault is a seal, a hinge adjustment, a fan motor, a thermostat or a sensor, the repair is usually straightforward and quoted on the spot. Electronic control boards are model-specific; we identify the correct part and quote it separately, with availability depending on the manufacturer. If the diagnosis points to the compressor or the sealed system, we will set out the realistic comparison with a replacement appliance rather than overselling a repair on an older unit.

Looking after it afterwards

Once repaired, keep a reasonable clearance behind and above the appliance so heat can escape, vacuum the dust off the condenser coils occasionally with the plug pulled out, and avoid pushing food hard against the back wall where the vents are. Check the door seals a couple of times a year — a clean, undamaged seal that grips evenly is the cheapest insurance against repeat temperature problems.

Booking your visit

Call or use our contact form with the brand and model number, when the fluctuation started, and any pattern you have noticed — worse when the kitchen is warm, worse after shopping day, or random. We will confirm an appointment time, and the price we quote before work starts is the price you pay. Nothing proceeds without your approval, and any parts needed are quoted separately on top.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A fridge that is cold one day and lukewarm the next is harder to live with than one that has failed outright, because you never know whether the milk is safe. Fluctuating temperatures nearly always have a traceable cause, and our visit finds it. We test the controls, airflow and cooling components in order and give you a plain explanation and a firm quote before starting any repair.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle

Good job, slightly late

Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.

Job: Toaster Not Working

No mess left behind

Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about inconsistent temperature

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

What is worth checking myself first?

Confirm the dial or digital settings have not been knocked, check food is not blocking the internal vents, and run a hand around the door seal feeling for air leaks. These are safe checks and often narrow the fault.

Could a worn door seal really cause temperature swings?

Yes. A perished or warped seal leaks warm air continuously, so the cabinet never settles. Seals are a common and usually straightforward repair once confirmed.

Do I need a fridge thermometer?

It is a cheap and useful way to see what the cabinet is actually doing between visits, and the pattern it records helps our diagnosis. We are happy to interpret your readings during the visit.

What if the fault is in the sealed refrigerant system?

That is specialist work we do not carry out, including any refrigerant recharge. We will tell you clearly if the evidence points there and explain your realistic options.

How is the work priced?

You pay a booking fee when booking to secure the appointment, and labour is at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved by you before any work starts, with any parts or materials quoted separately.
