Same-day dishwasher not draining

When a dishwasher will not drain, the water has to go somewhere and it has not. The machine will usually refuse to start a new cycle while it believes the old water is still there, so the symptom spreads from a slow drain to a machine that will not run at all.

First, the obvious

Before anything else: switch the machine off at the socket and do not open the door fully if the water level is high, because it will come out over the floor. If you need to bail water out, use a cup and a towel, and keep the plug and any sockets well clear.

Then look at the filter assembly in the base of the tub. It lifts out on most models and routinely collects food debris, broken glass and labels. A filter packed solid will slow draining to a stop. Cleaning it is a user task, and it is the single most common cause.

The drain path

Water leaves through the sump, past the drain pump impeller, along a corrugated hose, and into either the sink waste above the trap or a dedicated standpipe. Each point can block:

  • Filter and sump: food, fat and glass fragments.
  • Pump impeller: a foreign object such as a shard of glass or a piece of plastic jamming the blades.
  • Drain hose: grease congealing in a low loop, or a kink where the machine has been pushed back.
  • Sink spigot: the connection into the waste pipe, which blocks with grease and food over time.
  • Standpipe or trap: a blocked trap backs water up into the machine.

The sink spigot is worth particular attention, because it is hidden, it is a common block, and it produces exactly the symptom of a failed pump: the machine hums, tries to drain, and nothing moves.

Blockage or pump?

This is the question the visit answers. We check whether the pump runs at all, whether it hums without turning, and whether water moves when it does. A pump that hums and does not turn is usually jammed rather than failed. A pump that is silent may have an open winding or no supply from the board.

We also confirm the drain hose is clear by disconnecting and checking flow, and we check the sink spigot and trap. Only when the path is confirmed clear and the pump is confirmed dead do we quote a pump.

What we will not promise

We cannot say in advance whether your machine needs a clean or a pump. Anyone who quotes a pump over the phone before seeing the machine is guessing. We also cannot say in advance that a pump for your model will be in stock; some are common, some are specific, and we will tell you the availability and lead time rather than implying same-day completion.

If water has leaked

Standing water inside the tub is contained. Water under the machine or in the base tray is a different matter and points at a leak or an overflow, not just a drain block. In that case the machine should be off and isolated, and we will treat it as a leak diagnosis rather than a drain clearance.

Aftercare

After clearing or repairing, we run a drain cycle and watch the water leave, then run a full short programme. Check the sink waste afterwards for slow drainage, since a partially blocked trap will fill the machine again within a few cycles. A monthly rinse of the filter is worth the two minutes it takes.

Booking

Tell us the brand and model, how much water is standing, whether the machine hums when it tries to drain, and whether the sink drains slowly as well. That last detail often points straight at the spigot. Book online and pay the booking fee at the time of booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved by you before any work starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

3

You approve, we work

Standing water at the bottom of the tub is the clearest sign a dishwasher has stopped draining, and it usually smells before long. Most cases come down to a blockage somewhere in a short path, with a smaller number needing a pump. The order of checks matters, because replacing a pump that was only blocked is an expensive way to learn.

Questions people ask about dishwasher not draining

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I clear this myself?

Cleaning the filter basket is a sensible first step and often solves it. Beyond that, bailing the water and checking the sink waste drains freely is reasonable. Do not dismantle the pump or hose connections yourself with water still in the machine.

How do you decide between a blockage and a pump?

We check whether the pump runs, whether it hums without turning, and whether water moves when it does. Then we confirm the hose, spigot and trap are clear. A pump is only quoted once the path is proven clear and the pump proven dead.

Water is under the machine, not just inside. What now?

Switch it off at the socket if that is safe to reach, otherwise isolate the circuit, and do not run it again. Water beneath the machine points at a leak rather than a simple drain block, and it needs looking at before use.

Will you have the pump in stock?

Not necessarily. Some pumps are common and some are model-specific, so availability and lead time vary. We will tell you honestly rather than suggesting the job will complete in one visit.

What will the visit cost?

You pay the booking fee at the time of booking. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost before starting and you approve it; any parts are identified and quoted separately.
