Smart security changes quickly, and an upgrade can mean anything from replacing one unreliable camera to changing the hub and rebuilding the system. Existing devices, accounts and routines may be tied to particular manufacturers or app platforms, so compatibility is the first question rather than an afterthought. A careful survey avoids paying for equipment that will not integrate, and helps decide whether a targeted improvement or a broader replacement is the sensible route.
Start with the system you have
We make an inventory of the hub, cameras, sensors, door entry devices and apps in use, and note which items work reliably and which have reached the end of their useful life. We discuss what you want to improve — a blind spot, poor night view, weak WiFi range, missing phone alerts or easier access for household members. We also ask about your router, home layout, power availability and any existing routines, since those shape what an upgrade can realistically achieve.
Compatibility and coverage planning
New equipment is checked against the existing hub and platform: supported radio protocols, app versions, account requirements and any limits on device count or camera streams. We do not assume brands will interoperate just because they use the word 'smart'. We also plan physical coverage. Camera position, field of view, WiFi band and signal at the mounting location all matter; for battery devices, access for future battery changes matters too. If a better view requires cabling, power changes or access at height, those are identified before work is agreed.
Installation and configuration
Once you approve a defined scope, we install or configure the agreed devices, pair them to the supported hub, set appropriate detection zones and alerts, and test events through to your phone. Any routines or integrations are explained and tested as far as the supported local and third-party services allow. A larger upgrade is quoted after a survey, since the amount of cabling, device compatibility and property layout cannot be responsibly estimated from a brief description alone. Equipment and parts are quoted separately for approval.
Limits and responsibilities
Alarms and cameras deter, detect and record; we do not claim that an upgrade prevents burglary. We do not provide insurance approval, police-response promises or monitoring-station services; monitoring requires a separate provider contract. App features may rely on broadband, cloud services or third-party platforms, whose availability we cannot guarantee. For cameras, you are responsible for lawful and considerate use, including neighbours' privacy and responsible handling of recordings. We fit and configure but do not provide legal advice.
Keeping security intact
An upgrade should improve capability without lowering protections. We will not recommend disabling authentication, encryption or safety controls just to connect incompatible equipment. If products cannot work together securely and reliably, we will explain the choices: retain the working system, replace a defined portion, or plan a broader upgrade. You decide after seeing the scope and quote.
Booking a survey
Book through the Maintenance Men website or by phone. Tell us the system make and hub model if known, which devices you want to keep, what you want the upgrade to achieve, and any recurring problems. Photos of device locations and a list of recent router or app changes help us prepare. We will survey larger projects and quote the agreed scope before work begins.
Keeping the change proportionate
You may not need to replace everything to solve one blind spot or an unreliable sensor. A focused upgrade can preserve working equipment, reduce disruption and make the budget clearer, provided the existing hub supports the new components. We will distinguish what is essential from what is optional, explain any trade-offs in coverage or platform dependency, and let you decide. If a partial upgrade would leave an unstable or incompatible system, we will say so and set out the broader scope rather than pretending a patch will hold.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Upgrading smart security is not just buying newer cameras: the new devices need to work with your hub, reach the right parts of the property and fit the way you use the system. We start by assessing what you already have, what you want to improve and which products are genuinely compatible. The result is an upgrade plan based on coverage and realistic limits, not assumptions that every new device will talk to every old one.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service
5 out of 5 from 7 reviews
Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about smart security upgrade
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I upgrade my smart security system myself?
Adding a battery device through a supported app can be a reasonable DIY job if compatibility and coverage are clear. A larger upgrade involving hub changes, new cabling, multiple brands or camera placement is better surveyed first, so you do not end up with equipment that cannot work together.
What do you check before recommending an upgrade?
We inventory your existing hub and devices, identify compatibility and capacity limits, review coverage goals and measure signal at proposed locations. We also assess power and cabling needs, then quote a defined scope after survey for larger work.
Does a newer alarm guarantee better security or insurance approval?
No. We do not promise burglary prevention or insurance approval. An alarm or camera can deter, detect and record, but coverage and service availability have limits, and any insurance requirements should be confirmed directly with your insurer.
Can I keep my existing sensors when changing the hub?
Sometimes, but it depends on the exact model, protocol and platform support. We check each device before proposing the upgrade and will not assume old sensors will pair with a new hub until compatibility is verified.
How much does a smart security upgrade cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved by you before we start, with any parts quoted separately.
