Connection faults — calls that do not ring through, drop mid-conversation, or behave erratically — are among the more frustrating intercom problems because the system appears to work right up until it does not. In a wired system the communication path runs from the entrance panel through connection points and riser wiring to each handset, and a fault anywhere on that path produces the symptoms you are seeing.

What causes connection failures

Corroded and loose connections are the leading cause. Intercom wiring passes through terminal blocks at the panel, at junction points and at each handset, and oxidation on those terminals degrades the signal gradually — early symptoms are crackly calls and intermittent dropouts before connection fails entirely. Damaged cabling, whether from building work, rodents or age, produces similar effects. Failing power supplies cause erratic behaviour that looks like a connection fault: brown-out conditions let the system start a call but not sustain it. On multi-flat systems, a fault in shared riser wiring or a distribution module affects several or all flats. On some systems, an incorrectly configured or corrupted handset presents as a connection fault, which is why settings are checked before hardware is condemned. Water in the entrance panel is another regular culprit, causing symptoms that vary with the weather.

How we diagnose it

We start by mapping the symptom: does the fault affect one flat or many, all calls or some, all the time or intermittently? Then we test along the path — inspecting and re-seating terminal connections, measuring continuity and signal levels on the wiring, checking the power supply's output under load, and examining the entrance panel for moisture and corrosion. For intermittent faults, we look for correlation with weather, door use and time of day, and where necessary leave the system monitored or ask you to note when faults occur. The aim is a specific diagnosis, not a guess followed by parts-swapping at your expense.

Repairs and what they involve

Typical fixes are cleaning and re-terminating connections, replacing corroded terminal blocks, repairing or replacing damaged cable sections, drying and resealing a wet panel, or replacing a failing supply unit. On shared systems, riser and distribution faults are communal equipment — work on them normally requires your landlord, agent or housing association's permission, and we will not proceed without it. We never force communal doors or bypass security to gain access for testing. Parts are quoted separately and the full cost is approved before work starts.

What you can try safely

Reseating a plug-in handset is safe and occasionally resolves a poor connection at the cradle. Note down when faults happen — the pattern is genuinely useful. Beyond that, leave the wiring alone: intercom systems are sensitive to how connections are remade, and DIY joints tend to add faults rather than fix them.

Honest expectations

Intermittent faults are the hardest kind, and we will tell you honestly if diagnosis needs more than one visit or if a fault cannot be reproduced on the day. We diagnose before quoting, so no cost or timescale can be promised in advance. If we find the system is old and degrading generally, we will say so and compare repair against replacement honestly.

When to book

Book when calls fail to connect, when calls drop mid-conversation, when behaviour is erratic or worse in wet weather, or when several flats report similar problems. Tell us the system make if known, how many flats share it, and when the faults occur.

Connection faults get worse, not better. Get in touch and we will find where the path is breaking and quote the repair for your approval.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

An intercom that rings but will not connect, connects then cuts out, or behaves unpredictably has a fault somewhere on the communication path. These faults can feel random, but they follow patterns, and pattern is what diagnosis is for. We test the system methodically, explain what is failing, and quote the repair before starting.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about intercom system connection fault

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fix an intercom connection fault myself?

Reseating a plug-in handset and noting when the faults occur are the useful, safe steps. Do not remake wiring joints or open the panel — poor DIY connections on intercom systems typically add faults rather than fix them.

What do you check when calls fail or drop out?

We map the symptom across flats and time, then test terminal connections and signal levels along the wiring path, check the power supply under load, and inspect the entrance panel for moisture. Once the fault is located we quote the repair before starting.

Why does my intercom behave worse in wet weather?

Moisture in the entrance panel or in external connection points degrades signals and produces weather-dependent symptoms. That pattern is a strong sign of water ingress, which we can dry out and reseal as part of a quoted repair.

Several flats in our block have connection problems — what does that mean?

A shared symptom usually points to communal riser wiring or a distribution module rather than individual handsets. That work normally needs permission from your landlord, agent or housing association, which we will help you arrange before attending.

How is the repair priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. Once diagnosed, the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts such as terminal blocks or cable quoted separately.
