Gate automation has moved on considerably in the last decade. Control boards have become smarter and safer, app control has arrived, battery and solar options have improved, and the safety equipment fitted to modern systems is a different generation from what was standard years ago. If your gates are older, an upgrade can bring them up to date piece by piece — and the first question is always which parts are worth keeping.

What an Upgrade Can Cover

Modern safety equipment: new photocells, safety edges where the gate design allows them, and force limits set to current standards — on many older systems this is the most valuable upgrade of all, because older detection equipment is the part that has fallen furthest behind. Modern control boards: better diagnostics, smoother acceleration and deceleration, configurable access rules and quieter operation. Convenience: app and phone control, keypads and card readers, timed auto-close, partial opening for pedestrians, and integration with intercoms. Practical resilience: fresh battery backup, solar assistance for light-duty gates, and better-sealed enclosures that cope with our weather.

What We Assess Before Upgrading

We look at the whole system honestly. The gates and posts: are they mechanically sound enough to justify investment? The operator: is it worth keeping, are its parts still available, or has it reached the end of its supported life? The control equipment: can the existing board accept the upgrades you want, or does it need replacing? The power supply: adequate for modern equipment? And the safety equipment: what exists, what it can detect, and what a realistic improvement looks like. The output is a plain recommendation — upgrade this, keep that, replace the other — with the reasoning.

When Replacement Beats Upgrading

Some older operators have discontinued parts, unreliable spares supply and electronics that no modern safety equipment can properly integrate. Where that is the case, we will say that a replacement operator — often keeping your existing gates and posts — is the better investment, rather than selling upgrades onto equipment that will not cooperate. The decision is yours, made with the facts rather than a sales pitch.

Safety Comes First in Every Upgrade

Whatever is upgraded, the safety equipment is never downgraded to make it easier: photocells, safety edges and force limits must never be disabled or bypassed, and upgrades are planned so protection improves, not quietly disappears. Where an older system cannot properly support modern safety devices, that limitation is stated plainly and it shapes the recommendation rather than being papered over. After any upgrade we test all safety devices with real obstruction tests and demonstrate them to you.

Permissions, Boundaries and Shared Systems

If the gate is on a boundary, faces a pavement or is shared with a neighbour or management company, permissions or consent may be needed before changing equipment, and those matters are the customer's responsibility — we will flag anything relevant but cannot promise compliance status. Shared systems may also need agreement before any equipment is replaced.

What the Upgrade Visit Covers

Our upgrade estimate covers a defined working session on an agreed scope — typically fitting and commissioning a control board or safety equipment package on a sound system. Larger upgrades, including a replacement operator, new posts or groundworks, are quoted after assessment as staged work across the visits they genuinely need. Parts and equipment are always quoted separately, and nothing proceeds without your approval of the full cost.

Handover

We finish with the gates run through full cycles from every control method, safety devices tested, settings matched to how you live, and a walk-through of anything new — app setup, new remotes, changed timings. You will know exactly what changed, what it does and what to watch for.

Booking Your Visit

Book an assessment and tell us the make and model of your system, roughly its age, what you would like it to do that it cannot, and whether the gates are shared or on a boundary. You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with equipment and parts quoted separately. Same-day visits may be available.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Older gate systems can be made faster, quieter, smarter and — most importantly — safer, without necessarily replacing everything. Our assessment tells you honestly what is worth upgrading, what is worth keeping and what has simply reached the end.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about electric gate upgrade

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I upgrade my gate system myself?

Adding a remote or changing a code is usually fine per the manual. Swapping control boards, fitting safety equipment or rewiring is engineer work — boards control mains sections and heavy machinery, and safety settings done wrongly are genuinely dangerous. Safety devices must never be disabled or bypassed as part of any change.

What do you assess before recommending an upgrade?

The mechanical condition of gates and posts, the operator's age and parts availability, what the current control board can support, the power supply, and the existing safety equipment. The result is an honest recommendation of what to upgrade, what to keep and what genuinely needs replacing, with reasoning you can check.

Is upgrading worth it on an old system?

Often yes — especially safety equipment and control boards, which have improved most. But some older operators have discontinued parts and electronics that resist proper integration, and in those cases we will recommend replacing the operator while keeping your gates, rather than selling upgrades onto equipment that will not cooperate.

Will an upgrade improve my gate's safety?

Usually, and that is often the best reason to do it: modern photocells, safety edges and correctly set force limits are a genuine generation ahead of older equipment. What we never do is downgrade safety to simplify an upgrade — the protections must remain fully active and are tested with real obstruction tests before handover.

What does an upgrade cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. Equipment and parts are quoted separately, and larger upgrades are quoted after assessment as staged work.
