What causes air in your tap system
Air in the pipes shows up as spluttering taps, irregular flow, and a milky or white look to the water as it settles. It gets in for a few common reasons: recent plumbing work or a supply interruption that let the system drain down partially, a small leak or failed joint sucking in air rather than letting water out, a faulty or poorly seated gland or washer on a tap, and on some systems, a header tank running low and drawing air into the supply. Outside taps and long pipe runs can also trap pockets of air that normal use never quite clears — an outdoor garden tap repair that left the line half-drained will splutter for days afterwards, and air left in an outdoor line through winter makes a frozen outdoor tap fix more likely the following year.
Why it worsens if you leave it
A little trapped air is usually harmless and clears itself, but persistent spluttering means air is being drawn in continuously — that points to a leak or a faulty component that will not mend itself. Ongoing air in a hot water system accelerates corrosion, and if a joint is the entry point, the same fault can eventually weep water where it matters. On outside lines, trapped air combined with frost increases the chance of damage in cold snaps. A joint that is drawing air is also a joint that can later need major tap leak repair, and a split that lets air in can become burst tap emergency repair territory once pressure returns. So while it is a low-priority symptom, it is worth resolving rather than ignoring.
How we diagnose it
We ask when the spluttering started and whether it coincided with supply work, a freeze or a repair — that timeline tells us whether the air is residual or being drawn in. We run each affected tap and watch the flow pattern, check for milky water, and inspect tap glands, washers and joints on the affected runs. Where the system is fed from a tank, we check water levels and the pipework at the tank outlet. If we suspect a leak is letting air in, we pressure-test the relevant section to find it. Our garden tap plumber treats outside taps as a likely source, since they are the part of the system most often drained and refilled.
How we fix it
If air is entering through a component, we fix that component: reseating or renewing a tap gland or washer, remaking a poor joint, or correcting a tank or supply fault. The aim is not just quiet taps today but a system that stays air-free.
Preventing it happening again
After any planned plumbing work, run the system fully to purge air before judging the result. Keep an eye on header tank levels if you have one, and deal with small leaks promptly — a drip can breathe air as well as lose water. If spluttering keeps returning to the same tap, mention it at your next visit; a recurring pattern usually has a specific local cause worth pre-empting.
When to call us
Call us if spluttering persists for more than a day or two, if the water runs milky constantly rather than just briefly, if flow is noticeably weaker than normal, or if you know the pipes have been drained and they will not settle. If the noise is more bang than splutter, it is more likely noisy tap water hammer than trapped air — we diagnose that too. And if water is escaping rather than spluttering, do not wait for a routine appointment: call us and we will come out as your emergency tap repair near me option.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Spluttering, coughing water or a tap that spurts before settling usually means air is trapped in the pipework. It often follows supply work, a drain-down, or a small leak letting air in. We trace where the air is entering, bleed the system properly and fix the underlying cause.

Questions people ask about air in tap system fix
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is air in the pipes harmful?
No — the water stays safe to drink, though it may look milky for a moment as it settles. The concern is not health but plumbing: persistent air usually means a leak or faulty component somewhere, and in hot systems it speeds up corrosion.
Why is my tap water white and spluttering?
White or cloudy water is air dissolved in the supply — it clears from the bottom of the glass upwards within a minute or two. Combined with spluttering it points to trapped air, often after supply work or a drain-down. If it never clears, mention it to your water supplier as well.
How is the work priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
How do I clear an airlock myself?
Running the affected tap for several minutes, or connecting a hose between a working mains tap and the affected one to push the air out, sometimes works. If it does not clear quickly, or the problem keeps returning, call us rather than repeatedly fighting it.
Why does it keep coming back?
Recurring spluttering means air is being drawn in continuously — usually a small leak, a worn tap gland or a supply-side fault. That is a diagnosis job rather than a bleeding job, and exactly what we check during the visit.
