Decking is deceptively strong-looking and often surprisingly marginal. Boards feel solid; the frame under them may be joists at wide centres on bearers spanning too far on posts set too shallowly. That arrangement carries light use for years — and then a hot tub arrives, weighing more than the deck, the frame and everything in the garden combined once filled with water and people. Load is the one thing decking should never be guessed at.

When decks need reinforcement

The classic triggers are hot tubs, which impose enormous concentrated loads; heavy permanent features like large planters, outdoor kitchens and substantial structures; decks that have visibly started to bounce or sag under ordinary use; and older decks being asked to carry more than they were designed for. Reinforcement is also worth considering when you are extending the life of a well-built deck whose frame is sound but marginal.

How we assess load capacity

We inspect the frame: joist size, spacing and span, bearer arrangement, post sizes, bracing, connections and foundations. We compare that against the load you want it to carry — and we are conservative, because the difference between a deck that feels solid and one that is structurally adequate is exactly the difference that matters. Where the load is unusual or the answer is genuinely uncertain, we recommend a structural engineer's assessment rather than guessing; some strengthening decisions simply deserve professional calculation, and we say so.

How we reinforce

Depending on findings, reinforcement may involve adding joists and reducing centres, doubling or tripling members under concentrated loads, adding bearers and posts with proper foundations, improving bracing and connections, or renewing marginal timber. Every option is quoted as a clear price for your approval before work starts, with materials itemised separately. If the honest conclusion is that the deck cannot reasonably carry the intended load — and sometimes that is the answer — we will tell you, and talk through what can be achieved instead.

Weather and practicalities

Reinforcement means working under or within the frame, so safe access and dry conditions matter; we schedule sensibly and stage multi-day work safely. Where the load is a hot tub, we will also talk through delivery routes and point loads on the finished surface, because a crane-lifted tub crossing the deck is its own event.

Honest limits

Reinforcement makes a deck stronger for the loads we design it around — it does not make it indestructible, and we cannot guarantee the structure against future weathering or timber movement. What we do is work to sound practice, use properly treated timber and correct connections, and be honest about the margin we have built in.

When to call

Before the hot tub is delivered, not after — and the moment a deck starts bouncing or sagging under current use. Load problems announce themselves slowly and then suddenly.

A note on hot tubs specifically

Hot tubs deserve their own paragraph because they catch people out so reliably. A filled tub weighs as much as a small car — several tonnes with water and occupants — and it sits on four or five concentrated points, not spread evenly. Delivery adds its own loads as the tub crosses the deck or garden. If a tub is on your plans, tell us at the assessment stage: the reinforcement needs designing for the specific tub's weight, footprint and fill level, and the access route matters as much as the deck itself. Planning it with us first avoids expensive surprises on delivery day.

How to book

Book through maintenance-men.com or by phone. The booking fee is paid when you book, labour is hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. Tell us what load you are planning for — the deck's size, age and construction will guide the assessment.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A deck built for chairs and a barbecue is not automatically built for a hot tub, a row of mature planters or a garden party's worth of guests. We assess what the structure can actually carry, quote the reinforcement needed, and are straight with you when the honest answer is that it cannot be made to carry it.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about reinforcing deck structure

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I reinforce my own deck for a hot tub?

We would steer you away from this one. Hot tub loads are enormous and concentrated, and getting the joist doubling, bearer and post design wrong risks a failure that damages the tub and hurts people. This is a job where a proper assessment — sometimes with an engineer's calculation — is genuinely worth it.

What do you check when assessing a deck for heavy loads?

Joist sizes, spacing and spans, bearer arrangement, post sizes, foundations and bracing, and the condition of all fixings and connectors. We compare the structure against the load you intend, and where the calculation is genuinely uncertain we recommend a structural engineer rather than guessing.

Is a bouncing deck safe to use in the meantime?

Ordinary light use is usually tolerable, but keep heavy furniture, groups of people, planters and above all anything like a hot tub off it until the structure has been assessed. Bounce is the frame telling you its spans or members are marginal, and loading a marginal frame accelerates the problem.

What if my deck simply cannot take the load I want?

We will tell you honestly rather than sell a token upgrade. Sometimes the answer is a properly engineered rebuild, a ground-level alternative for the feature, or placing it on a suitable base instead of the deck. You will get the real options with their trade-offs, not false reassurance.

How much does deck reinforcement cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. After assessing the structure we quote the full cost of the strengthening work, which you approve before we start; timber, connectors and fixings are quoted separately as materials.
